Mary N. (Horrigan) McDonald

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 18, 2007 for Mrs. Mary N. McDonald. Mrs. McDonald was born and raised in Cambridge, Ma. Mary was a graduate of the Cambridge High & Latin. She went on to Boston University and received a certificate of Practical Arts & Letters. 1n 1965 she graduated from Bentley College with certification in Accounting. Mary worked as a self-employed accountant with several business in the area.

Mrs, McDonald moved to Watertown in 1981 from Medford and had lived there for 30 years. Mary was a Past President of the Women’s Club, member of Sacred Heart Church in Lexington, former Sunday School teacher, and served as an Eucharistic Minister. She passed away at home on Saturday April 14, 2007 with her family at her bedside.

Mrs. McDonald in her autobiography “Memories” in Chapter 8 wrote: “When I graduated from High School in 1930, there was no money for me to go to college. Work was very hard to get but I was fortunate that my father knew someone in the John Hancock. I was also fortunate to be assigned to the actuarial department because I really enjoyed working with math and I found figuring to be fascinating.

“About a year after I began working, my beloved grandmother died and left me $125. This was enough for me to enroll in Boston University School for Women. … After four years of evening school, I received a certificate for proficiency in secretarial studies. I stayed at John Hancock, though, because jobs were hard to get and I liked the work.

“Milton (Jerry) McDonald and I had gone together since I was 18 years old, so when he retuned home after four years of service in World War II, we were married. Given the war service, we had been courting for 15 years, which was far too long. I finally began to do what I had always wanted—keep house and raise a family. We had six children—Noreen, Michael, Brian, Denis, Neil and Paul. I think the happiest time of my life was when I was in the midst of family. It may have looked like hard work, but believe me, it didn’t seem like work to me.

“When I was 48 years old I began to think about the future. I knew that I would return to work when the children grew older; so, I enrolled in Bentley College of Accounting and Finance, … it had an excellent reputation for turning out good accountants. I attended school in the evening for four years after which I received a certificate, with honors, in accounting. I was 52 and starting to work again, along with keeping the house and family going.

“It was a good time to start out again. The government had made many new requirements of contractors—Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action, ECT. They were required to have a certain number of minority workers and, being a woman, I was counted as a minority. This was an interesting part of my life. I joined Women In Construction and made new friends.

“In 1950, we purchased a six room, three bedroom house. When Denis was born we added to the garage and put two bedrooms over it. Later, when my mother became an invalid, we added a bedroom where there had once been a sun porch.

“When I went back to work, I was able to make my own hours. My schedule was such that I took the boys to Malden to school, took Jerry to the train and went to work. I was home by 3:30 PM. God has always given me a great deal of energy and I juggled everything until I was 63 years old. Then I suffered a heart attack—a cardiac arrest from which I lost the back of my heart. But four months later I was back to work.

“Jerry died of cancer in 1980 and five months later, in 1981, I took a trip to Arizona because the newspapers said it was the warmest place in the country. The following year, I returned to Arizona and purchased a 3 room condominium where I planned to spend the cold winter months. I was 70 and it seemed like a good time to retire. That year I had another heart attack and the doctor said I should get out of New England’s climate and live in Arizona, solidifying my decision. So I did. …

“Summing it all up, I have had 87 good years. God has blessed me and may He bless you and all our family.”

Her son, Denis, added “At 88 Mary moved back to Watertown and lived the remainder of her life with her son Brian.”

She leaves six children: Noreen of Wolfboro, N.H., Michael of Methuen, Brian of Watertown, Denis of Seattle, WA., Neil of Scarborough, ME., and Paul of Jakurta, Indonesia; 15 grandchildren: Keith, Robert & Andrew Arcari, Brendan, Caitlin, Brian, Sean, Dan, Liam, Lauren, Scott, Matt, and Conor McDonald, Jennifer Naughton and Shanna Sands and 8 great grandchildren: Michael Arcari, Sandy Rose, Therese, Elle Mary and Jackson McDonald, Grace & Max Naughton and Hunter Sands. She was also survived by her sister Rita Hawley. She was predeceased by her husband Milton (Jerry) McDonald, her parents, Michael L. and Margaret V. (Tierney) and siblings Ruth Kunz and Albert Horrigan.
