Mabel Foster Greene, 88

Yarmouth - Mabel "Babe" Foster Greene lived a long and full life and died March 17, 1998 on her 88th birthday. She was born in 1910, in Stamford Connecticut, the daughter of the late Dr. Dean and Mabel Foster. She attended the Low Heywood School and she graduated from Vassar College. She continued her education at Columbia School of Nursing, where she received her R.N. degree. She worked for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Committee, and travelled extensively. She also worked as Eleanor Roosevelt's special envoy to Europe during the war.

She married the late Clark Greene and lived in Huntington, N.Y., where she taught nursing for many years. She also worked for Planned Parenthood and was on the East Coast Regional Steering Committee. Her home was a gathering place for many of her daughters Kathy and Sherry's friends; and she was a surrogate mother to many.

She retired to Falmouth, MA in 1972 where she was a member of the Falmouth Gardening Club and the Congregational Church. She volunteered at Falmouth Hospital and at the V.D. Clinic, much to the amazement of many.

Babe moved to Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth and enjoyed bridge, reading group, and stirring up a little trouble now and then. She was a determined, fiercely independent spirit who enriched the lives of many people with her warmth.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Dahms of South Portland, Maine, Sherry Greene-Starr and six grandchildren: Caitlin Dahms, Russell Dahms, Jr., Evan Dahms of South Portland, Maine, and Chloe Starr, Megan Starr and Luke Starr of West Barnstable; the Lennox family, and many devoted friends.

Services will be held at Thirwood Place on March 20 at 1 p.m.

Contributions in her name may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, Planned Parenthood, and the Association for the Preservation of Cape Cod.

Russell Johnson, 66

Hyannis - Russell Clayton Johnson, 66, a custodian for the Barnstable school system for many years, died unexpectedly March 9, 1998 in Fort Myers, Fla., while on a visit.

Mr. Johnson was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a life member of the Hyannis Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of Tin Can Sailors, a member of Discover Flying radio control club and a former Mason. He enjoyed RV camping and boating.

He is survived by three daughters, Patricia Wolf and Linda Casavant, both of Oxford, and Susan Penner of Plainville; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild, and a friend, Debra Sullivan of Hyannis.

A funeral service was held March 12 at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, with burial in Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Memorial donations can made to the American Heart Association, 33 Fourth Ave., Needham, MA 02194.

Frances Pierce, 79

Marstons Mills - Frances H. "Fannie" (Wick) Pierce, 79, a longtime resident of Marstons Mills, died March 14, 1998 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

Mrs. Pierce was born and raised in Maynard and moved to Marstons Mills in 1939.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Pierce is survived by a daughter, Julie Hall of Dayton, Maine, and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service was held March 17 in Marstons Mills Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, 88 Kingston St., Boston, MA 02111­2227.

Marjorie Rankin, 87

Centerville - Marjorie Rankin, 87, a lifelong resident of Osterville, died March 9, 1998 at Cape Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

She was a graduate of Barnstable High School.

Miss Rankin worked at the Mellon Estate in Oyster Harbors for many years.

Miss Rankin is survived by her brother, Robert C. Rankin of Osterville; a niece, Audry Killion of Winchester; and two cousins, Alcott Hallett Jr. and Grace P. Chesbro, both of Osterville.

Services were private.

Arthur P. Smith, 75

Osterville - Arthur P. Smith, 75, a decorated World War II and Korean War flyer, died of cancer March 8, 1998 at his Osterville home.

He was the husband of the late Louise F. (Nolan) Smith.

Mr. Smith, a Navy pilot, received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and many other decorations for his service in World War II and the Korean War. He recently had renewed his private pilot's licence and was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association.

Mr. Smith worked as a mechanist for Owens-Corning Fiberglas in Ashton, R.I, and Hanson Systems in North Attleboro, retiring in 1984. He moved to Osterville in 1983 from North Attleboro. He was a past president of the Dennis Playhouse. He was an avid gardener and loved clamming, the beach and computers.

He is survived by his companion, Philomona Reed of Osterville; a son, Ted M. Smith of South Attleboro; three daughters, Susan N. Allard of East Sandwich, Christine P. Braveman of Elmira, N.Y., and Kelly M. Head of Everett, Wash.; a brother, Henry Smith of Vero Beach, Fla.; a sister, Margie Nolan of Southington, Conn.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Robert N. Smith and William C. Smith.

A funeral Mass was held March 12 in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Wianno Avenue, Osterville.

Donna M. Taylor, 46

Wareham - Donna M. Taylor, 46, died March 14, 1998 at Tobey Hospital after a long illness.

She was the daughter of Brenard Taylor of Dennisport and stepdaughter of Edward Bearse of Harwich. Her mother, Ruth (Eldridge) Bearse, died in 1996.

Born in Hyannis, she was raised for a short time in Dennis and in Harwich before becoming a student at the Paul A. Dever State School in Taunton, where she lived for more than 30 years. For the past 11 years, she was a resident at the I.C.F. House in Wareham.

She was employed by the Community Connection Workshop in Marion.

Besides her father and stepfather, she is survived by a sister, Bonnie Chandler of Harwich; four half sisters, Tammy Johnson of Dennis, Brenda Johnson of Arizona, Deborah Bearse of Harwich and Jill Bearse of Hyannis; a half brother, Richard Taylor of Avon, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were private.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

William Culver Tilden, 86

West Barnstable - William Culver Tilden, 86, a Mayflower descendant related to Cape Cod's early settlers, died March 7, 1998 at the home of his caregiver, Lee Ellen Haselton, after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Gretchen Tilden.

Mr. Tilden was born in Canadaigua, N.Y. He lived in Palymra, N.Y., where he was a longtime vestryman of the Zion Episcopal Church. He was a tanner, taxidermist and farmer and, in his younger years, he and his wife were award-winning dancers at the Arthur Murray Studios in Rochester, N.Y.

In 1971, the Tildens retired to Eastham, where they were active in church and civic activities and became benefactors of arts organizations.

The Tildens funded the Tilden Writing/Teaching Chair in Language and Literature at Cape Cod Community College, endowed the Tilden Arts Festival and, in 1991, were honored by the naming of the Tilden Arts Center at the college.

Mr. Tilden is survived by Lee Haselton, whom he considered his adopted daughter; and his godchildren, Emma Elizabeth Haselton and Lily Xiao Haselton, all of West Barnstable.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Cape Cod Community College.

John F. Tobin, 79

Marstons Mills - John Francis Tobin, 79, an educator for more than 40 years, died March 14, 1998 at his Marstons Mills home after a long illness.

Mr. Tobin grew up in Bridgewater, earning a B.S. and M.E. in education at Bridgewater State College, where he was president of the Men's Athletic Association. Mr. Tobin served in the Navy during WWII in the Southwest Pacific and Mediterranean.

After the war, he taught in Bourne and then Marshfield, where he was principal of the South River School and coordinator of instruction for the school system from 1946 to 1964. During that time, he established the first central elementary school library and organized an in-service program for teachers used as a model for the state program.

After earning his doctorate from Boston University, Mr. Tobin served as assistant general superintendent of schools in Niles, Ill. He returned to Massachusetts to serve as superintendent of the Westwood school system from 1967 to his retirement in 1984.

He was an avid gardener, golfer and boatman. He was inducted into the Bridgewater State College Athletic Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Emily "Lyz" (Lawrence) Tobin; a son, John Tobin of Pittsford, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Beaman of Buffalo, N.Y., Laury Hunt of Medfield and Barbara Lennon of Sandwich; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service was held March 18 in the First Church of Christ, Sandwich.

Florence Vaughn, 71

Barnstable - Florence Cecilia Vaughn, 71, died March 14, 1998 at the Greenery at Lewis Bay in Hyannis after a short illness.

Born in Barnstable, she lived in the Barnstable area most of her life, except for several years with her former husband in Lawton, Okla., moving back to Barnstable in 1977.

She enjoyed oil painting and crafts. While living in Lawton, she was active in the NCO Wives Club at Fort Sill, the PTA, and as a den mother in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Barnstable and its Sunshine Group.

A graveside service was held March 17 at Oak Neck Cemetery, Hyannis.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 572 Main St., W. Yarmouth, MA 02673.
