Lucy C. Leen, 79

Yarmouthport - Lucy C. (Clark) Leen, 79, a resident of Yarmouthport since 1973, died March 17, 1998 at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Norman E. Leen.

Born in Johnson City, N.Y., Mrs. Leen grew up in Endicott, N.Y., graduating from Endicott High School. As a young woman, she modeled for 10 years for Bonwitt Teller in New York City.

She was a resident of Needham for many years before moving to Yarmouthport in 1973. She and her husband spent their winters in Surfside, Florida.

Mrs. Leen was a member of the Cummaquid Golf Club and the Surf Club in Surfside.

Surviving are two sons, Norman E. Leen Jr. of Yarmouthport, and Michael Leen of Hingham; a sister, Virginia Lynch of Surfside, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held March 20 at the Hallett Funeral Home in South Yarmouth, followed by a Mass at Sacred Heart Chapel in Yarmouthport. Burial was in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline.

Memorial donations may be made to the Charles River Association for Retarded Citizens, P.O. Box 169, Needham, MA 02192.

Leon Rice, 80

West Barnstable - Leon Rice, 80, a resident of the Cape since 1979, died February 24, 1998 at his home in West Barnstable of a heart attack.

He was the husband of Dorothea Rice for 51 years.

Mr. Rice graduated from Northeastern School of Law and, after passing the bar, went to work in the office of the Boston City Corporation Council. During World War II he worked in the Office of Price Administration in Washington , D.C.

During his years in Washington , Good Housekeeping magazine published his first short story. When the war ended he went to the law firm of Cravath, Swaine and Moore in New York City.

He went to work for Columbia Broadcasting System in News, Special Events, Children's Programming, Sports and Space. At the time of his retirement, he was the managing attorney for the CBS Law Department. In 1979 he retired to Brewster and then to West Barnstable in 1982.

He belonged to the Hyannis Rotary Club for a few years and was a member of the Unitarian Church in Barnstable Village for many years. He enjoyed traveling to Europe, Greece and Hawaii.

Surviving besides his wife are two brothers, David Rice of Centerville and Albert Rice of Arizona; and two nephews.

Services were private, and memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Donald Romkey, 80

Marstons Mills - Donald G. Romkey, 80, a retired restaurant cook, died March 22, 1998 at Hospice House in Barnstable.

He was the husband of Dorothy L. (Hume) Romkey, who died in 1991.

Born in Newburyport, he lived in Redondo Beach, California for 16 years before moving to Marstons Mills in 1970.

Mr. Romkey had worked as a cook in various Cape Cod restaurants and was still working part time until 1996.

He enjoyed square dancing, horseback riding, cake decorating and spending time with his grandchildren.

Mr. Romkey leaves one son, Geoffrey Romkey of Marstons Mills; one daughter, Jacklyn Chapman of Hyannisport; and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held March 25 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills, with burial following in Marstons Mills Cemetery.

George A. Roth, 95

Turners Falls - George A. Roth, 95, who leaves a daughter in Centerville, died March 16, 1998 at Buckley Nursing Home in Greenfield.

He was the husband of Magdaline F. (Hahn) Roth for 72 years.

A native of Montague, he was educated in local public schools and lived in Turners Falls. He was employed by the former Keith Paper Co. and Strathmore Paper Co., both of Turners Falls, until his retirement in 1967.

Mr. Roth was a communicant of St. Mary's of the Assumption Church, where he also volunteered as a part-time custodian.

An avid sportsman and lover of the outdoors, he was both a hunter and an angler. He was a life member and oldest member of the Turners Falls Rod and Gun Club and also a life member of the Turners Falls Knights of Columbus Council since the age of 18.

Mr. Roth played the cornet in the Turners Falls Town Band for several years.

He enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Joyce A. Nadeau of Centerville; two sons, Philip G. Roth of Longmeadow and Howard K. Roth of Stormville, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A Liturgy of Christian Burial was held March 20 at St. Mary's of the Assumption Church in Turners Falls. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

Donald S. Wilson, 92

Hyannis - Donald Stanley Wilson, 92, a retired businessman and bank manager, died March 22, 1998 at Cape Regency Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Centerville.

He was the husband of the late Edna (Mandler) Wilson, to whom he was married for 47 years.

Born, raised and educated in New York City, Mr. Wilson owned and operated a soap manufacturing business prior to World War II. Following his service in the Army, he moved to Yonkers, N.Y. and began his career as a hops broker, supplying dealers and breweries.

In 1962, Mr. Wilson started work at the Greenburgh Savings Bank in Hartsdale, N.Y. He retired as manager in 1970. For many years, he was a volunteer firefighter in Yonkers. He was a volunteer barber at the local veterans hospital and was a member of American Legion Post 321 in Yonkers.

Mr. Wilson moved to Hyannis soon after his retirement. He became active with the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable and volunteered his time at area nursing homes. He was instrumental in starting the b-bus, which provides transportation for senior citizens.

He is survived by two nieces, Audrey Rutley of Tobyhanna, Pa., and Muriel DeLorio of Vista, N.Y. and eight grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral was held March 25 at the First Lutheran Church in West Barnstable. Burial was in Massaschusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Allen M. Aktarian, 35

Worcester - Allen M. Aktarian, 35, of Worcester and Barnstable, died March 31, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis, after an illness.

He was the son of Ralph J. and Viola V. (Szafarowicz) Aktarian of Worcester.

Born in Worcester, he lived there most of his life until moving to Barnstable earlier this year. He was a welder for Hyannis Welding Co. until the time of his death and previously was the founder and owner of the Ack's Welding Co. in Worcester. He also worked for O.S. Walker Co. for many years.

Mr. Aktarian was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade School and a Navy veteran. He was a former member of Saint Margaret Mary Church and a member of the Brown Square Civic Club.

He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Surviving besides his parents are a daughter, Arriane Allen Aktarian of Worcester; two sisters, Joyce Sullivan of Worcester and Sandra Aktarian of Southbridge; his former wife, Yusimy (Garcia) Aktarian of Worcester; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral was held April 3 at Arthur S. Manzi & Son Funeral Home in Worcester, with a Mass in Our Lady of Mount Carmel St. Ann Church in Worcester.

Joseph H. Brown, 87

Osterville - Joseph H. Brown, 87, a retired electrical engineer, died March 29, 1998 at Brewster Manor Nursing Home.

He was the husband of the late Sophia (Litchman) Brown.

Born in Brockton, Mr. Brown was educated at Northeastern University in Boston. He spent his early career as an electrical design engineer at Stone & Webster in Boston. He designed many unique plans for power distribution for military and naval applications throughout the war years, 1940 to 1945.

Mr. Brown later served as an underwater power engineer in Newport, R.I. where he led the design effort at Raytheon and other naval facilities. More recently, he traveled throughout the world, designing, measuring and improving long-distance, low-frequency communication systems for the defense industry.

He attained high levels of rank and achievement as a civilian employee of the Air Force and Navy and was awarded many honors for innovation, excellence and achievement.

He is survived by a son, Sherman Brown of San Francisco; a daughter, Valerie Kalwak of Newport, R.I.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on April 1 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home in Marstons Mills.

Marie Buckner, 71

Bristol, Ct. - Marie (Law) Buckner, 71, of Bristol, Conn., a former nurse at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, died April 6, 1998 in St. Francis Hospital in Hartford after a brief illness.

Mrs. Buckner was born in Worcester. She worked at Cape Cod Hospital for 20 years, retiring to Bristol six years ago.

She is survived by her daughter, Arlene Schissler of Terryville, Conn.; her sister, Ruth Hildreth of Westminster, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held April 8 in the Asbury United Methodist Church in Forestville, Conn., with burial in Peacedale Cemetery in Bristol, Conn.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 310 Collins St., Hartford, CT 06105.

Paul V. Charest, 72

Centerville - Paul V. Charest, 72, died March 31, 1998 at Ormond Memorial Hospital in Ormond Beach, Fla.

He was the husband of Doris M. (Daudelin) Charest.

Born in Roxbury, he graduated from Mission Hill High School and served in the Navy during World War II.

A resident of Milford for more than 30 years, he owned Chezvous, was active in community and civic affairs, was a call fireman and sang in various chapters of Barbershop Quartets.

He also worked as a sales representative for Emerson Rug in Norwood and Danvers and for Walpole Woodworkers in Falmouth. He retired 10 years ago.

Mr. Charest was a member of Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville and sang in the adult choir and with the Victory Players. He also sang with the Surf-Tones and was instrumental in starting the Centerville Christmas Stroll.

Surviving besides his wife are four daughters, Alice DeCosta of Forestdale, Denise Donahue of Mashpee and Palm Coast, Fla., Reyne DeMir of Medway and Michelle Atcheson of Marstons Mills; two sons, Jeffrey Charest of Bellingham and Edward Charest of Peabody; four brothers, Armand Charest of Northboro, Gerald Charest of New Smyrna, Fla., George Charest of Milford and Leo Charest of North Grafton; a sister, Loretta Rocheleau of Epsom, N.H.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on April 4 at Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville. Burial was in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Centerville.
