Francis E. Foster, Sr., 84

Marstons Mills - Francis E. Foster Sr., 84, a former truck driver, died on May 26, 1998 at the Cape Cod Hospital Extended Care Community Pavilion in Hyannis after a brief illness.

He was the husband of the late Ruth A. (Foye) Foster.

Born and educated in Brockton, Mr. Foster lived in Brockton until 1982 when he moved to Marstons Mills. He worked as a truck driver for Intercity Transportation.

He was one of the few remaining in the Double or Nothing Club at the former Wendal Avenue Congregational Church.

Surviving are a son, Francis E. Foster Jr. of East Bridgewater; two daughters, Dorothy J. Richardson of East Bridgewater and Janice R. Moe of West Yarmouth; two sisters, Jesse Webster and Theresa Clement; a brother, Walter Foster; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date.

Virginia Kittila, 82

Osterville - Virginia D. (Donley) Kittila, 82, died on May 29, 1998 at the Cape Regency Nursing Home in Centerville.

She was the wife of the late Enos Alexander "Bill" Kittila.

Mrs. Kittila was born in Rockland and raised and educated in South Weymouth. She married and moved to Osterville in the mid-1930s.

She was a homemaker for several years and then worked for Dr. John Niles in Osterville as a receptionist, retiring in 1961.

She was active in various community affairs which included the Girl Scouts, the Osterville Community Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She enjoyed gardening, nature, reading poetry and music.

Mrs. Kittila is survived by two daughters, Joy K. Hambly and Joan K. Shields both of Osterville; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral was at 3 p.m. on June 2 at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Barnstable. Burial was private.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte. 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675, or the charity of one's choice.

Louise Lombardo, 75

Osterville - Louise (Pierce) Lombardo, 75, died on May 27, 1998 at her home in Osterville.

She was the wife of John B. Lombardo.

Mrs. Lombardo was born in Chelsea and educated in Whitman. She was a longtime resident of Needham until moving to Osterville 14 years ago.

She was formerly employed by Calvert's and was a member of the Barnstable Newcomers Bowling League.

Surviving besides her husband are a daughter, Jo Ann Fabbrucci of Norwood; a son, John Lombardo of Woburn; and three grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on June 1 at Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville. Burial was in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

Robert L. McGill, 46

Centerville - Robert L. McGill, 46, a self-employed mason, died unexpectedly on May 29, 1998 at his home in Centerville.

Mr. McGill was born in Copperhill, Tenn., and moved to the Cape at an early age.

He attended Barnstable schools, and he had been a resident of Centerville for many years.

He began working as a mason in the family business, McGill Masonry and became a self-employed mason contractor in the early 1980s.

He enjoyed fishing and automobiles.

He is survived by his mother, Barbara (Massengale) McGill of Centerville; a sister, Kathy McGill of Centerville; four brothers, Thomas W. McGill of Centerville, Joseph McGill of Lawrenceville, Ga., Timothy McGill of Marstons Mills, and John Mark McGill of Centerville; a grandmother, Lucille McGill of Copperhill, Tenn.; four nieces; two nephews; and his close friend, Michelle Morin of Hyannis.

A graveside service was held at 10 a.m. on June 3 in the Mosswood Cemetery in Cotuit.

Donations in his memory may be made to the Cape Cod Council on Alcoholism, 76 West Main St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Elsa L. Powers, 79

Hyannisport - Elsa L. (Anderson) Powers, 79, a homemaker and former middle school teacher, died unexpectedly on May 30, 1998 in her Hyannisport home.

She was the wife of Charles A. Powers Jr. of Hyannisport.

Mrs. Powers was born in Brockton. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1936 and from the State Teachers College at Hyannis four years later. She also studied at New York University, where she received an amateur radio license.

Mrs. Powers taught sixth grade from 1940 to 1945 in Norwell, Reading and Scarsdale, NY. She also coached girls basketball while teaching in Norwell.

After her marriage to Mr. Powers 53 years ago, she lived in Randolph from 1947 to 1952, Milton from 1952 to 1979 and Hyannisport from 1979 until her death.

She was an associate member of the First Congregational Church in Milton, where she was a deaconess and was a member of the Federated Church of Hyannis where she served on the Church Committee.

Active in community affairs, Mrs.. Powers received the Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award and became a Rotary Foundation Benefactor in 1996. She also was a member of the Milton Women's Club, the Hyannisport Civic Association and was a Cub Scout mother for many years. She volunteered at Milton and Cape Cod hospitals and at the Massachusetts Hospital School in Canton.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Powers is survived by four sons, Robert W. Powers of Barrington, R.I, David A. Powers of Hingham, Richard G. Powers of Gloucester and John S. Powers of Hyannisport; three brothers, Arvid A., Albert E. and Robert A. Anderson, all of Hyannisport; two sisters, Maia Brogan of Hyannisport and Winter Park, Fla., and Ruth Berry of Hyannisport; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. June 20 at the Federated Church of Hyannis. There will be no visiting hours, and the burial will be private.

Charles M. Seay, 76

Osterville - Charles M. Seay, 76, died on May 29, 1998 at his home in Osterville after a brief illness;

He was the husband of Valerie J. Wright-Seay and the late Winona (Freeman) Seay who died in 1981.

Mr. Seay was born in Richmond, Va., and at an early age he moved to New York City where he was raised and educated.

For a brief time, he worked for Work Projects Administration in New York and was a member of the National Guard reserve. He was activated into duty in the Army in 1941 and served during World War II in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters.

After his discharge in 1945, he returned to Brooklyn and married.

For many years he worked for the New York City Transit Authority as a bus driver, until his retirement in the early 1970s.

After retiring, he moved from Queens, N.Y., to Osterville.

He worked for the Barnstable schools in Osterville as a custodian until he retired in the mid-1980s.

He was a member of the Holy Trinity Baptist Church in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Mr. Seay was an avid sports fan and enjoyed working outdoors around his home.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Charles M. Seay II of Brookline; two daughters, Michelle L. Seay of Atlanta, Ga., and Lisa R. Rice of Fort Myers, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

A funeral was held at 1:15 p.m. on June 2 at the John-Lawrence Funeral Home, Marstons Mills.

Burial followed the funeral in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

Lillian Vroom, 104

Centerville - Lillian (Wentworth) Vroom, 104, a retired Red Cross volunteer and worker, died on May 24, 1998 at the Cape Regency Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Frederic K. Vroom and the mother of the late William W. Vroom.

Mrs. Vroom was born and raised in Somerville.

After she completed her education she moved to Greenfield where she was associated with the Franklin County Chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a volunteer and then became a staff aide from 1942 to 1943 when she became home-service secretary, a position she held until the end of World War II. After the war she took on additional responsibilities with the agency, including fund-raising.

In the late 1940s she became the executive secretary of the Franklin County Chapter.

She moved to Watertown in 1953 where she was supervisor of communications and reception to the home service department of the Boston Metropolitan Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In the mid-1950s she assumed the duties as executive secretary of the Wellesley Chapter.

She retired in 1959 and moved to Osterville in 1970.

Mrs. Vroom was an avid knitter and was known for her knitted sweaters.

She also enjoyed playing bridge.

The funeral for Mrs. Vroom was private.
