John F. Bradley Jr., 85

Boston - John F. Bradley Jr., 85, a world traveler and avid gardener during his retirement on Cape Cod, died on June 6, 1998 at Massachusetts General Hospital after a short illness.

Born in Blackstone, Mr. Bradley graduated from Uxbridge High School and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He then worked for more than 40 years for the Blackstone Valley Electric Co. in Woonsocket and Lincoln R.I. He retired in 1977 as superintendent of overhead distribution for northern Rhode Island.

Married to the late Eleanor (Mahony) Bradley, the couple lived in Woonsocket and North Smithfield before moving to Marstons Mills in 1985.

During his retirement he enjoyed gardening, stamp and coin collecting and shellfishing. The couple also traveled extensively in Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Central America.

Mr. Bradley is survived by three sons, John, of Somerville; Lee, of East Waterford, ME., and Michael Bradley of Newton; a brother, Joseph, of Mendon; two sisters, Marguerite Daley and Mary Bradley, both of Bellingham; and three grandchildren.

There was a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on June 10 at the Sacred Heart Church, Newton Center. Burial followed at St. Mary's Cemetery in Uxbridge.

Thomas Brown, 77

West Hyannisport - Thomas Brown, 77, a resident of. West Hyannisport, died on June 1, 1998 after a long illness.

He was the husband of the late Walter Mae (Daniels) Brown.

Born in Charleston, S.C., he was educated in New York City and joined the Army in 1941, serving for 25 years. He was decorated for bravery in both World War II and the Korean War.

While serving his country in Germany, he met his wife and they were married in 1956. After his retirement from the military, Mr. Brown and his wife settled in West Hyannisport.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, Cape Cod Canal Corps of Engineers and Otis Air Force Base.

Mr. Brown enjoyed golfing and fishing. He was an active member of the Council of Doers Men's Club for many years.

Surviving are three sisters, Helen Patterson, Anna Bryant and Ruth Wilson, all of New York City; a brother, Joseph Brown of New York City; eight nieces and three nephews; and nine grandnieces and two grandnephews.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. on June 8 at the Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home, Hyannis. The funeral was private.

Edla E. Dahlbo, 89

Cotuit - Edla E (Roslund) Dahlbo, 89, a Cotuit resident, died on June 1, 1998 at the John Adams Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Quincy, following a period of failing health.

She was the wife of the late Gustav C. Dahlbo.

Mrs. Dahlbo was born and educated in Hoganas, Sweden, and came to the United States at age 16. She lived in Milton before moving to Cotuit.

She was a member of the Cotuit Highground Golf Club.

Surviving are a son, Norman C. Dahlbo of Laconia, N.H.; two daughters, Ann D. Stoyle of Braintree and Linda D. Hale of Manchester, N.H.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. on June 8 in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Memorial donations may be made to the Activities Fund of the John Adams Continuing Care Center, 211 Franklin St., Quincy, MA 02169.

Frida Launer, 97

Osterville - Frida Launer, 97, of Little Island, Osterville, died at her home on June 3, 1998.

Born in Oslo, Norway, she served as a registered nurse in Norway before moving to the United States in the mid-1920s.

Miss Launer lived at Oyster Harbors for more than 40 years, where she served as a private secretary and traveling companion to the late Gladys Brooks Thayer.

She is survived by a nephew; two grandnephews; and two great-grandnieces.

A graveside service was held at 11:30 a.m. on June 8 in Mosswood Cemetery, Cotuit.

Joseph D. Murphy, 75

Centerville - Joseph D. Murphy, 75, a retired New England Telephone and Telegraph employee, died on June 4, 1998 at his home after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Patricia M. (Finn) Murphy.

Born in Boston, Mr. Murphy was raised and educated in Quincy. During World War II, he served as a gunner in the Army Air Corps.

He was a resident of Sharon for 35 years, where he served on the conservation commission, the school building committee and was a founder of the Massapoag Sportsmen's Club.

Mr. Murphy retired to Centerville in 1985 after 39 years with the telephone company. He was a member of the Cape Cod Carvers, the Osterville Men's Club, the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Dowses Beach "Liars Club."

Besides his wife of 50 years, Mr. Murphy is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Pillsbury of Hyannis, Mary Beth O'Dea of Foxboro; two sons, Dennis J. Murphy of Harwich, Peter J. Murphy of Minneapolis, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. on June 9 in Our Lady of Victory Church, Centerville, with burial following in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte. 6A, Yarmouthport, MA 02675.

M. Thomas McDonald, 55

Hyannis - M. Thomas McDonald, 55, died on June 5, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital of heart failure.

Born in Anniston, Ala, he attended schools in Chatham and was a graduate of Palm Beach High School in Florida.

He lived in Lake Worth, Fla., where he worked in sales and distribution for Holsum and Merita bakeries.

Mr. McDonald moved to the Cape in 1981 and worked in landscaping. He was a volunteer driver for Meals-on-Wheels for the last two years.

Surviving are a sister, Nancy Phinney of Hyannis; an aunt, Jean Pickard of Chatham; a niece and a nephew; and a grandnephew.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Memorial donations may be made to the Hyannis Rescue Squad, 95 High School Rd. Ext, Hyannis, MA 02601.

Richard L. Renaud, 74

Marstons Mills - Richard L. Renaud, 74, a retired metallurgist, died at his home on June 5, 1998 after a long illness.

He was the husband of Lorraine (Duclos) Renaud.

Mr. Renaud was born, raised and educated in Southbridge, where he was a graduate of the Mary E. Wells School, co-captain of the football team and a member of the track and football teams. He was inducted into the Mary E. Wells Hall of Fame in Southbridge in 1996.

He joined the merchant marine in 1942 and was attending officer candidate school in New London, Conn., at the time of his discharge in 1945.

Mr. Renaud was employed as a metallurgist for United Aircraft in East Hartford, Conn., for 33 years, retiring in 1987.

He vacationed on Cape Cod for many years and moved to Cape Cod after his retirement.

Mr. Renaud was an avid golfer and a member of Holly Ridge Golf Club in Sandwich.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Jeanne George of Brewster and Denise Heath of Bellingham; three sisters, Lillian Brown of Brewster and Lucille McKinstry and Georgette Bourdelais, both of Southbridge; two grandchildren; and 38 nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass was celebrated in Our Lady of Hope Chapel, West Barnstable, on June 8 at 10 a.m.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Cape Cod, 923 Rte. 6A, Yarmouthport.

Caroline P. Rooney, 84

Osterville - Caroline P. (Spadoni) Rooney, 84, a resident of Osterville, died on June 1, 1998 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis.

She was the wife of P. Bernard Rooney, who died in 1985.

Mrs. Rooney was born in the Readville section of Hyde Park and lived on the Cape for more than 40 years in Hyannis and in Osterville.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Church and the Women's Guild.

A funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. on June 4 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Osterville. Burial was at noon in Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree.

Patricia Toas, 55

Plano, Texas - Patricia "Pat" Toas, 55, a former cash manager for the Barnstable school system and later head cook for Elder Services of Cape Cod, died on June 7, 1998 in Plano, where she was staying with a daughter.

A former resident of Houston, Mrs. Toas lived in Hyannis for the past 10 years, where she worked first for Barnstable schools and later with EIder Services.

Mrs. Toas most recently enjoyed traveling and working with her husband, Richard, who is a driver for a moving company.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Toas is survived by three daughters, Lynelle (Cegielski) Witt of PIano, Roselle (Cegielski) Reed of Richmond, Texas , and Christel (Cegielski) Burns of Lewisville, Texas ; one son, Christopher Cegielski of Houston; one stepdaughter, Shannon Toas of Taunton; one stepson, Shawn Toas, of Houston; and eight grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Michelle Cegielski.

There was a funeral service at 11 a.m. on June 9 at the funeral home chapel. Burial followed in Resurrection Cemetery.
