Evelyn M. Hagberg, 86

Monday, April 9, 2001

EASTHAM -- Evelyn M. (Fischer) Hagberg, 86, formerly of Worcester, died Thursday, April 5, at her daughter's home in Rockville, Md.

Her husband, Dr. Waldo O. Hagberg, died in 1991. She leaves a daughter, Dorothy H. Cappel of Rockville; two grandsons, David and John Cappel, of Rockville; many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. Born in Worcester, daughter of Friedolph and Sophia (Anderson) Fischer, she graduated from South High School. She lived in Worcester until 1992, moving to Eastham.

While in Worcester, Mrs. Hagberg was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a violinist in the Trinity Symphonette. She was also a member of the Worcester District Medical Society Alliance, the Massachusetts Medical Society Alliance, the Auxiliary at the former Doctors Hospital, Worcester, and Stella Chapter, Order of Easter Star. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Harwich, and its Esther Circle.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137, Harwich. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. A calling period is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Parkway, Orleans. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Route 137, East Harwich, MA 02645.

Eric W. Hallback, 79

WORCESTER -- Eric W. Hallback, 79, of 79 Acushnet Ave., died Thursday, April 12, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness. Howard C. Allen Funeral Home, 653 Main St., Shrewsbury, is directing funeral arrangements, which are incomplete.

John F. Hanley, 74

OXFORD -- John F. Hanley, 74, of Mount Pleasant Street, a retired business owner and operator, died Friday, April 6, in the Hospice Residence, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 29 years, Amy F. (Grampetro) Hanley; two daughters, Veronica Frost of New Windsor, N.Y., and Aliesha D. Guittar of Webster; a granddaughter; and three nieces. He was born in Yonkers, N.Y., son of James F. and Catherine (Brue) Hanley, and lived in New York before moving to Oxford 29 years ago. He served in the Navy.

Mr. Hanley owned and operated Commercial Security Inc. for 13 years, retiring in 1997. He was the founder and private investigator for the company. Previously, he was a special police officer 10 years on the Oxford Police Department, where he was a sergeant. He was constable in Oxford and was the founder and primary instructor of the Oxford Police cadet program from 1977 to 1980. He was a past president of the Oxford Police Association and a member of the Oxford Police Honor Guard. He was a member of St. Roch's Church, was chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, was a past arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau, and was a former member of the Masons in Worcester. He enjoyed sports.

The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St. with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St. Burial will be at the family's convenience. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 9, in the funeral home. Flowers may be sent, or memorial donations made to VNA Care Hospice Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608; or to Hospice Residence, 10 Judith Road, Worcester, MA 01602.

Barbara L. Hawes, 83

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Barbara L. Hawes, 83, of Pinehurst, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Monday, April 9, in First Health Moore Regional Hospital.

She leaves her husband, Robert E. Hawes; a son, Joseph W. Hawes of Wappingers Falls, N.Y.; two daughters, Susan Smith of North Attleboro and Barbara J. Barron of Westbrook, Conn.; and five grandchildren. She was born in Worcester, and lived in Worcester for many years.

Mrs. Hawes was a homemaker.

No funeral services are planned. Cape Fear Crematory, Fayetteville, is directing arrangements.

Margaret I. Hayes, 91

GARDNER -- Margaret I. Hayes, 91, of 32 Hospital Hill Road, formerly of 127 Peabody Street, a longtime educator and local advocate, died Monday, March 9, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home after a long illness.

She leaves her caregivers and cousin, James D. and Louise G. Murphy of Gardner. Three sisters, Nellie, Mary and Agnes Hayes, predeceased her. She was born in Gardner, daughter of John and Agnes (Noonan) Hayes and graduated from Gardner High School in 1929. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Fitchburg State College, did advanced studies at Skidmore College, and graduated from the Institute of Music Pedagogy in Northampton.

Miss Hayes started her teaching career in East Templeton in 1929, moving to the Gardner school system in 1930. She was a classroom teacher at Coleman Street School before becoming a guidance counselor in the Gardner Elementary School System. She retired in 1976 after 46 years of service.

She was a member of National Education, Massachusetts Teachers and Gardner Teachers associations. She was also a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association for Children with Learning Disabilities, the Massachusetts Guidance Counselors Association and Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association.

She was an Incorporator and vice president of the Gardner Community Child Care Center, and was past secretary of the Gardner-Athol Mental Health Association. She was a former board member of the Gardner Visiting Nursing Association. She was a member and Woman of Achievement Award winner in 1973 of the Greater Gardner Business and Professional Women's Club. She was the recipient of numerous other statewide and regional awards from state, Catholic and teachers associations for her efforts and philanthropy on behalf of children.

She was one of the founders of the Gardner Holy Family Guild and the Catholic Charities Thrift Shop. She was past President of the Gardner Catholic Women's Club, Past President and Treasurer of Northern Worcester County Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and was a member of the Gardner Quota Club and Gardner Emblem Club.

She was organist and choir director of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church for 35 years, where she directed many musicals, shows and pageants.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, April 11, from the Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery at a later date. A calling hour will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 166 Cross St., Gardner, MA. 01440.

Richard J. Hermanson

GARDNER -- Richard J. Hermanson, 74, of 425 West St., a World War II veteran and a former finishing foreman and bar manager, died Friday, April 6, at home after an illness.

His wife, R. June (Erickson) Hermanson, died in 1992. He leaves two sons, Jeffrey G. and Michael G. Hermanson, both of Gardner; a sister, Gertrude Carll of Gardner; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Gardner, son of John and Edith (Anderson) Hermanson, and lived most of his life in Gardner. He attended Templeton High School, which awarded him a high school diploma in a ceremony for World War II veterans in May. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, he serving as a seaman first class.

Mr. Hermanson was a finishing foreman at S. Bent Brothers Furniture Co. He was bar manager at Ovila Case Post Veterans of Foreign Wars until 1988. He previously worked at Baker's Dairy, Westminster.

He was a member and past commander of Ovila Case Post 905 and a past president of the Gardner Veterans Council. He was a longtime member of Gardner Municipal Golf Course. He enjoyed candlepin bowling, and was a former little league coach.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 9, in the funeral home. Members of Ovila Case Post 905 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. during the calling hours. Memorial donations may be made to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association and Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.

Elizabeth Heroian, 99

WORCESTER -- Elizabeth (Varjabedian) Heroian, 99, of 109 North Newton Ave., died Tuesday, April 10, in Jewish Healthcare Center.

Her husband of 42 years, Bogos G. “Paul” Heroian, died in 1966. She leaves a son, Ara P. Heroian of Worcester; a daughter, Grace Varsenig Saxenian of Waco, Texas; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A sister, Sharkey Hightaian of Worcester, died in 1993. She was born in Tadem, Harpoot, Armenia, daughter of Garabed and Tourvanda Varjabedian, and came to Worcester in 1924. She was a survivor of the 1915 genocide of the Armenian people by the Turkish Ottoman empire.

Mrs. Heroian assisted her husband in operating the family business, Paul's Spa. She was a member of Armenian Church of Our Saviour, the AVAKS, and the Tadem Educational Society.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. A calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, in Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Armenian Church of Our Saviour, 87 Salisbury St.; or to Jewish Home Care Service, 629 Salisbury St., both Worcester, MA 01609.

Joseph P. Hester, 79

HOLDEN -- Joseph P. Hester, 79, of 28 Greenwood Parkway, a World War II veteran and a retired company president, died Wednesday, April 11, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 50 years, Anne T. (O'Brien) Hester; two sons, Patrick J. Hester of Westboro and Dr. John T. Hester of Ashland; two daughters, Margaret M. Harrington of Sterling and Mary E. Lincoln of Waltham; two sisters, Katherine Thompson of Clinton and Margaret O'Malley of Waltham; 10 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born and raised in Clinton, son of Patrick J. and Margaret (Tierney) Hester, and lived 32 years in Holden. He graduated from Clinton High School and attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and Northwestern University in Chicago.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Hester worked 25 years at Boston Beef Co., Worcester, retiring as president in 1995. Previously, he worked for Armour Beef Co. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Jefferson, and the Clinton Elks.

The funeral will be held Saturday, April 14, from Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., with a Liturgy of the Word at 9 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Millbury. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the funeral home.

Jeanette Adrienne Hetu

DALY CITY, Calif. -- Jeanette Adrienne (Guilmette) Hetu, 88, of 443-3 Green Ridge Drive, formerly of Webster and Ware, Mass., died Tuesday, April 10, in Daly City.

Her husband of 33 years, Rudolphe E. Hetu, died in 1966. She leaves a daughter, Jeanne A. Tuggle of Daly City; a sister, Marianna Wolanski of Ayer, Mass.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. A daughter, Doris Hetu Tanner of Sebring, Fla., died in 1976. A granddaughter died in 1989. Four brothers, Armand, Georges, Lucien and Antonio Guilmette, also predeceased her. She was born in Salem, Mass., daughter of Treffle and Agnes (Buchette) Guilmette, and lived 28 years in Webster before moving to Ware, Mass., in 1940. She moved to Sebring in 1960 and to California last year. She graduated from the commercial course at St. Anne's School, Webster.

Mrs. Hetu was a homemaker.

A memorial Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 4, in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 16 East Main St., Webster. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., Webster, is directing arrangements.

Barbara A. Hill, 66

GARDNER -- Barbara A. (Streeter) Hill, 66, of 123 Leamy St., a former waitress, died Saturday, April 7, at home after an illness.

She leaves her husband of 48 years, James F. Hill; three sons, James C. Hill of Gardner, David C. Hill of Ventura, Calif., and Jeffrey M. Hill of Winchendon; two daughters, Sharon Blanchette and Susan Bourgeois, both of Gardner; three brothers, David Streeter of Las Vegas, Harold Streeter Jr. of St. Francis, Maine, and Richard Streeter of Conway, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; nephews and nieces. A brother, Walter Streeter, predeceased her. She was born in Gardner, daughter of Harold and Marion J. (Foote) Streeter, and graduated from Gardner High School in 1952.

Mrs. Hill was a waitress 25 years at Ray's Peter Pan Restaurant until its closing. She enjoyed making crafts, painting and gardening.

Calling hours are 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in Smith Funeral Home, 69 Vernon St. Burial will follow in Crystal Lake Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Gardner Visiting Nursing Association and Hospice, 34 Pearly Lane, Gardner, MA 01440.

Ruby Hills, 96

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. -- Ruby (Kleam) Hills, 96, of Wethersfield, died Monday, April 9, at a local convalescent home.

Her husband, Frank R. Hills, predeceased her. She leaves a son, James B. Hills of Holden; two daughters; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was born in Hartford, Conn.

Mrs. Hills worked at Connecticut Mutual for 23 years. She was a member of the Senior Citizens of Wethersfield.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the Rose Hill Funeral Service Home, 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. Burial will be in Rose Memorial Park. Calling hours are noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave., Meriden CT 06450.

Priscilla J. Hollis, 85

PROVIDENCE -- Priscilla J. (Janney) Hollis, 85, of Blackstone Blvd., formerly of Worcester, Mass., a golfing enthusiast, died Monday, April 2, in Epoch on the Boulevard.

Her husband, James E. Hollis Jr., predeceased her. She leaves two daughters, Priscilla J. Driscoll of Buffalo, N.Y. and Kimber H. Hamm of Lindley, N.Y.; three sons, James E. Hollis III of Wellesley Hills, Mass., Stephen H. Hollis of Casper, Wyo., and Robert M. Hollis of Providence; a sister, Margaret J. Pace of Greenwich, Conn.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild. Two brothers, Walter C. Janney Jr., and F. Wistar Janney, and two sisters, Marian J. Ware and Janney Brown, predeceased her. She was born in Bryn Mawr, Pa., daughter of Walter C. and Pauline F. (Morris) Janney, and lived 13 years in Worcester before moving to Providence in 1958. She graduated from the Westover School in Middlebury, Conn., and Bennington College in Bennington, Vt.

Mrs. Hollis was a former board member of Planned Parenthood in Providence, and was a member of the Providence Federation of Garden Clubs. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Butler Hospital. She was a member of the Elephant Rock Beach Club in Westport.

She was an avid golfer, and was a former member of the Agawam Hunt Country Club in East Providence, the Acoaxet Country Club in Westport, Mass., and the Tatnuck Country Club in Worcester. In 1957, she teamed with her husband to win a golf championship in Massachusetts. She was a member of the Rhode Island Women's Golf Association and the U.S. Women's Golf Association.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in First Unitarian Church, 1 Benevolent St. Donations may be made to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, 12 Sanderson Road, Smithfield, RI 02917. Monahan Kelly Drabble Sherman Funeral Home, 230 Waterman St., is directing arrangements.
