WORCESTER -- Jerry A. Brindisi, 71, of 4 Village St., formerly of 5 Chrome St., a World War II veteran and a former paint contractor, died Tuesday, May 29, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after being stricken ill.He leaves his longtime companion, Kathleen M. Braney, with whom he lived; a son, Peter A. Brindisi III of North Grafton; three brothers, Joseph Brindisi of Leominster, Peter A. Brindisi Jr. of Worcester and Salvatore J. Brindisi of Auburn; three sisters, Janette R. Comeau and Mary C. “Cookie” Neddo, both of Shrewsbury, and Rose Ricci of Worcester; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Dorothy Patricks, died in 1993. Two brothers, Frank and Domenic Brindisi, also predeceased him. Born in Worcester, son of Peter A. Brindisi Sr. and Rose (Vegnone) Brindisi, he graduated from Commerce High School. He was a World War II Army veteran.

Mr. Brindisi was a self-employed paint contractor most of his life.He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Ann Church and the Charles F. Minney Post Veterans of Foreign Wars in Millbury. He was past commander and chaplain of the Homer Wheaton Post American Legion. He was formerly a singer and musician, playing drums with area bands.

The funeral, with military honors, will be held Friday, June 1, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers.

Darius H. Brunell, 83

MILLBURY -- Darius H. Brunell, 83, of 91 South Main St., a retired master mechanic, died Sunday, May 27, in Vencor of St. Petersburg Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., after a long illness.

He leaves his wife, Grace D. (LaDue) Steele Brunell; two sons, Randolph D. Brunell of Fairfax Station, Va., and Edward D. Brunell of Elizabeth, Colo.; a stepson, Charles A. Rock of Holden; three stepdaughters, Diane A. Dion and Rita C. Cammuso, both of Millbury, and Estelle M. Sherman of Lakeville; a sister, Mildred A. Spayne of Worcester; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. His first wife, Jeannette L. (Bertrand) Brunell, his second wife, Cecile R. (Peloquin) Rock Brunell, a sister, Hariett Murray, and a brother, Walter Brunell, predeceased him. He was born in Millbury, son of Frederick and Ruth (Johnson) Brunell. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1936, where he excelled in track and field. A World War II Army veteran, he served in Asia and the Pacific and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Liberation of the Philippines Campaign.

Mr. Brunell was a master mechanic 30 years at New England Carbon Wire Co., retiring in 1983. He previously was a carpenter and house builder, working with his father. He was a member of St. Brigid's Parish, a former member of Charles F. Minney Post 3329, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a former secretary of Millbury Little League.

The funeral will be held Saturday, June 2, from Turgeon Funeral Home, 56 Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Brigid's Church, 59 Main St. Burial will be in Central Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 1, in the funeral home. Members of Charles F. Minney Post Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct a ritual at 7 p.m. during the calling hours.

Arlene E. Buker, 85

PITTSTON, Maine -- Arlene E. (Kelley) Buker, 85, of North Whitefield Road, died Friday, June 1, in Maine General Rehabilitation and Nursing Care at Gray Birch Drive, Augusta.Her husband, Wayne Buker, died in 1986. She leaves a brother, G. Norman Kelley of Pittston; and several nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Fred, Eugene and Owen Kelley predeceased her. Born in Gardiner, daughter of Roy E. and Eva M. (Larrabee) Kelley, she graduated from Gardiner High School in 1932. She attended Clark University in Worcester, Mass.

Mrs. Buker taught piano more than 25 years in Linwood, Mass. After her husband's death, she returned to Maine, where she taught music in Pittston and was organist at the Gardiner Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, Pittston Grange 214, and Marion Chapter 63 Order of Eastern Star.The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, in Gardiner Congregational Church, U.C.C. Burial will be in Litchfield Plains Cemetery, Litchfield. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in Amesbury-White Funeral Home, 39 Washington Ave., Gardiner. Memorial donations may be made to Gardiner Congregational Church, U.C.C., 46 Church St., Gardiner, ME 04345.

WORCESTER -- Romeo J. “Joe” Chaput Jr., 68, of 45 Fox St., a former union official, died Friday, June 1, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after an illness.He leaves his wife of 48 years, Veronica E. (Chrabascz) Chaput; a son, Joseph Chaput of Worcester; three daughters, Sandra C. Dick and Darlene M. Chaput, both of Worcester, and Cindy H. Mulcahy of Spencer; a sister, Carol Hawkins of Fitchburg; six grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. A brother, Francis Chaput of Worcester, died a few years ago. He was born in Worcester, son of Romeo J. Chaput Sr. and Mary (Lonergan) Chaput.

Mr. Chaput was a machinist 27 years at the former Standard Yarn Co. until it closed in 1986. He then worked at the Providence House Extended Care Center for several years before retiring.He was former president of the AFL-CIO United Textile Workers Union.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 5, from Callahan Brothers Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John's Church, 40 Temple St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 4, in the funeral home.

Eric P. Clough, 39

WEST WARREN -- Eric P. Clough, 39, of Main Street, died Thursday, May 31, at his parent's residence in Warren.He leaves his parents, Philip A. and Diane M. (Brissette) Clough of Warren; his paternal grandmother, Lois Clough of Palmer; a sister, Deanna M. Sariol-Clough of Hillsdale, N.J.; a brother, Quintin Clough of Astoria, N.Y.; nephews and nieces. He was born in Palmer and was raised in Warren. He later lived 10 years in Captiva Island, Fla., before returning to West Warren six years ago. He attended Warren schools and graduated from Quaboag Regional High School in 1980.

Mr. Clough was a cook at the Picadilly Pub in Sturbridge for the past six years.

A funeral will be held at 8:45 a.m. from Beers & Story Palmer Funeral Home, 1475 North Main St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, in St. Paul's Church, Main Street. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Renovation Fund, Main Street, Warren, MA 01083.

Mabel E. Cole, 87

AUBURN -- Mabel E. (St. Laurent) Cole, 87, of Deerfield Circle, a former nursing home worker, died Tuesday, May 29, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center. She leaves a son, King W.J. Cole of Laughlin, Nev.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna J. and Frank A. Capozzo, with whom she lived; a brother, Elmer St. Laurent of Worcester; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Born in Worcester, daughter of Octave G. and Eva D. (Roy) St. Laurent, she attended Worcester public schools.

Mrs. Cole was formerly a sterilizer at Worcester City Hospital and then lived and worked 15 years at the former Mrs. Wright's Nursing Home, Worcester. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and a den leader at the Piedmont Center in Worcester.

The funeral will be held Friday, June 1, from the Caswell-King Funeral Home, 474 Grove St., Worcester, with a Mass at noon in St. Joseph's Church, 189 Oxford St. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hour is 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 1, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Life Care Center of Auburn, 14 Masonic Circle, Auburn, MA 01501.

Leda G. Cooke, 87

FALMOUTH -- Leda G. (Bishop) Cooke, 87, of Falmouth, formerly of Worcester, a former salesclerk, died Tuesday, May 29, in J.M.L. Care Center.

Her husband, John Cooke, died in 1992. She leaves a son, Wendall E. Cooke of Bourne; nephews and nieces. Born in Orwell, Vt., daughter of Eugene and Ida (Stedman) Bishop, she lived in Worcester before moving to Falmouth in 1993.

Mrs. Cooke was a salesclerk for R.H. White's Department Stores, Worcester.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 2, in Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St., Fair Haven, Vt. Burial will be in Fair View Cemetery in Benson, Vt. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity.

Arthur J. Cournoyer, 81

EAST BROOKFIELD -- Arthur J. Cournoyer, 81, of 255 Podunk Road, a World War II veteran and retired wire inspector, died Saturday, June 2, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 48 years, Marion E. (Robator) Cournoyer; two sons, town police chief William J. Cournoyer, and Arthur W. Cournoyer, both of East Brookfield; two daughters, Linda J. Wheeler of East Brookfield and Diana M. Richard of Spencer; five sisters, Loretta McMullen of Milton, Blanche Lazure of East Brookfield, Irene Gaudette and Delores King, both of Spencer and Anne Comeau of South Chatham; 11 grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific. He was born in Leicester, son of William and Bernadette (Michaud) Cournoyer, and lived in Spencer before moving to East Brookfield in 1955.

Mr. Cournoyer was a wire inspector 20 years at the Worcester Wire division of National Standard, retiring in 1981. He previously owned Art's Soda Bar in Spencer from 1949 to 1955.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and Gaudette-Kirk Post 138 American Legion in Spencer, the Second Marine Division and Marine Corps Association of Leathernecks.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 5, from J. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terrace, Spencer, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, North Brookfield Road. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 4, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the East Brookfield Ambulance Fund, PO Box 356, East Brookfield, MA 01515.

Helene A. Cunniff, 85

MILLBURY -- Helene A. (Crowley) Cunniff, 85, of 6 John St., a retired sales associate, died Tuesday, May 29, in Providence House of Millbury after an illness.

Her husband, John P. Cunniff, died in 1969. She leaves several nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces. Five brothers, John F., James, Thomas W., Andrew J. and Charles Crowley, and three sisters, Sister Mary Magdalena, Alice C. Crowley and Margaret Fredhoff, predeceased her. Born in Warren, daughter of John and Margaret (McCourt) Crowley, she lived many years in Millbury. She graduated from Warren High School.

Mrs. Cunniff was a sales associate at Filene's Department Store, then in Worcester, before retiring. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Worcester, and an auxiliary member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Charles F. Minney Post 3329.

The funeral will be Friday, June 1, from Morin Funeral Home, 298 Grafton St., Worcester, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton St., Worcester. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling period is 9 to 9:45 a.m. Friday, June 1, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 West 168th St., New York, NY 10032.

Barbara M. Dawes, 65

SUTTON -- Barbara M. (Budreau) Dawes, 65, of 5 Church St., Wilkinsonville, a retired nursing home worker, died Thursday, May 31, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center.

She leaves her former husband, Daniel E. Dawes of Brookfield; two sons, Michael J. Dawes of East Douglas and Daniel P. Dawes of the Turners Falls section of Montague; a sister, Julia A. Anderson of Worcester; two brothers, Henry E. Budreau Jr. of Barre and William J. Budreau of Leicester; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Two daughters, Diana DiPilato and Kathleen M. Gillispie, and a sister, Marion Adamiak, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Henry E. and Marjorie M. (Gangnon) Budreau, and lived 11 years in Sutton. She attended Barre High School.

Mrs. Dawes worked nine years in the rehabilitation department of Providence House Nursing Home of Millbury, retiring in 1996. She previously was a certified nurse's aide for 10 years at Haywood Valley Nursing Home in Worcester. She was a member of St. Mark's Church. A funeral will be held Monday, June 4, from Mulhane Home for Funerals, 45 Main St., Millbury, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mark's Church, 356 Boston Road. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Donald R. Deitzel, 64

LEOMINSTER -- Donald R. Deitzel, 64, of 489 Willard St., a retired train conductor and a Korean War veteran, died Wednesday, May 30, at the Leominster Order of Eagles, after he was stricken ill there.

His wife, Barbara (Sicard) Deitzel, died in 1999. He leaves three sons, Scott C. Deitzel of Citrus Heights, Calif., and David B. and Christopher M. Deitzel, both of Fitchburg; two daughters, Wendy A. Rellstab and Brenda E. Deitzel, both of Leominster; his mother, Ruth (Hull) Parker of Leominster; a sister, Carol Iacaboni of Leominster; six grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was born in Teaneck, N.J., son of August Deitzel, and lived here for many years. He graduated from Leominster High School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Deitzel was a conductor for more than 20 years with the Guilford Rail System, North Billerica, retiring in 1995. He also was a part-time bartender at the South End National Club, Fitchburg. Previously, he worked at Borden Chemical Co. and Goodhue Enterprises.

He was a member of St. Cecilia's Church, the Leominster Order of Eagles, Westminster Country Club and South End National Club. Mr. Deitzel was president of United Transit Union Local 254. He enjoyed golfing, and was a sports fan.

The funeral will be held Tuesday, June 5, from Brandon-Simard Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St. Burial will be in St. Leo's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 4, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ali Pierce Fund, c/o UMass Medical Center, 55 North Lake Ave., Worcester, MA 01655.
