Daniel Deneen, 77

DAYVILLE, Conn. -- Daniel Deneen, 77, of Woodfield Drive, formerly of Fitchburg, a retired sales consultant, died Monday, May 28, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, Mass., after an illness.

He leaves several cousins, including the Rev. Donald Simonds of Danielson; and an aunt, Doris Simonds of Fitchburg, Mass. A sister, Eleanor Deneen, predeceased him. Born in Leominster, Mass., son of Daniel and Helen (Ryan) Deneen, he lived 25 years in the Killingly-Putnam area. He graduated from St. Bernard High School, Fitchburg, in 1943. A World War II Army veteran, he served as a private in China, Burma and India.

Mr. Deneen was a salesman most of his life and worked as a sales consultant in Tennessee, Alabama and Kentucky. Most recently, he was a sales consultant for Weld Power in Auburn, Mass., retiring in 1991. He was a constable in Milford, Conn., from 1965 to 1970. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Irish American Partnership. He enjoyed reading, music, traveling, and football.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, from Smith & Walker Funeral Home, 148 Grove St., Putnam, with a Mass at 11 a.m .in St. James Church, Franklin Street, Danielson. Calling hour is 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 2, in the funeral home.

Gary R. Dix, 66

NORTHBORO -- Gary R. Dix, 66, of 96 Victoria Lane, formerly of Douglas, died Thursday, May 31, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after an illness. Funeral arrangements, under the direction of Tancrell-Jackman Funeral Home, 35 Snowling Road, Uxbridge, are incomplete.

James C. Doherty, 71

CHELMSFORD -- James C. Doherty, 71, of Chelmsford, formerly of Fitchburg, died Tuesday, May 29, at the Life Care Center of Merrimack Valley, Billerica.

He leaves his wife, Louise L. (Sobrero) Doherty; a son, James C. Doherty Jr. of North Attleboro; a daughter, Elizabeth Ruggieri of Medway; and a grandson. A brother, Paul Doherty, and a sister, Ruth McPhillips, predeceased him. He was born in Arlington, son of James C. and Elizabeth (O'Neil) Doherty. He was a Korean War Navy veteran.

Mr. Doherty was a purchasing agent at the UMass Medical Center, Worcester. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knight's of Columbus.

The funeral will be held at 8 a.m. Friday, June 1, in the Blake Funeral Home, 24 Worthern St., with a Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church, Route 4. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, in the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Hospice of Greater Lowell, 336 Central St., Lowell MA 01852.

Lois H. Donley, 90

HOLDEN -- Lois H. (Hale) Donley, 90, of 43 Holt Road, died Friday, June 1, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus, Worcester.Her husband of 40 years, Lawrence E. Donley, died in 1976. She leaves a nephew, Ralph W. Anderson of Shrewsbury; two nieces, Gayle G. Miller of Leicester and Judith H. Lund of Sarasota, Fla.; several grandnephews and grandnieces. A brother, Seymour Hale, and a sister, Virginia Anderson, predeceased her. She was born in Athol, daughter of Watson I. and Mary (Gregory) Hale, and graduated from Athol High School. She lived more than 60 years in Holden.

Mrs. Donley was a medical transcriber and secretary for many years at Holden Hospital, and was later the office manager at Dr. Mayo's practice. After retiring, she volunteered at UMass Medical School's bookstore.She enjoyed swimming, and enjoyed water aerobics. She attended First Congregational Church of Holden.

The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 4, in Grove Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L Street, NW, Washington, DC 20037. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., is directing arrangements.

Eleanor Small Downey

LEXINGTON -- Eleanor (Bordeaux) Small Downey, 78, of Lexington and Spencer, a former teacher, died Wednesday, May 30, at her Lexington home after a battle with leukemia.

She leaves her husband of 32 years, Rogers B. Downey; two sons, James W. Small of Burlington and Edward M. Small of Spencer; a daughter, Lesley E. Zorabedian of Reading; two stepdaughters, Susan E. Messina of North Reading and Judi Lentini of Chelmsford; five sisters, Alma Phelan and Velna Roberts, both of Marshfield, Lucille Cummings of Barre, Audrey Benoit of St. Paul, Minn., and Arline Kinscherf of Tinton Falls, N.J.; a brother, Clark Bordeaux of Barre; 11 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Her first husband, John W. Small, and a sister, Carmen Bordeaux, predeceased her. She was born in Keene, N.H., daughter of Ray and Esther (Anderson) Bordeaux. She graduated from Barre High School and Bridgewater State Teachers College.

From 1944 to 1948, Mrs. Downey taught elementary school in West Hartford, Conn., and in East Brookfield. She then taught kindergarten in Spencer from 1961 to 1969 and first grade in Bedford from 1969 to 1986.

The memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, June 2, in First Congregational Church, 205 Main St., Spencer. Burial will be private. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eleanor Small Downey Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o David Prouty High School Permanent Scholarship Fund, 302 Main St., Spencer, MA 01562.

Joseph E. Dufresne, 78

AUBURN -- Joseph E. Dufresne, 78, of 239 Oxford St., a World War II veteran and retired tool maker, died Friday, June 1, in Beaumont Nursing Facility, Westboro, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 56 years, Gisele M. (Maurais) Dufresne of Auburn; two sons, William F. Dufresne of Alexandria, Va., and Joseph E. Dufresne Jr. of Holden; a daughter, Jeanne L. Davis of Worcester; two sisters, Leona Southland of Port Richey, Fla. and Bernadette Dufresne of Chula-Vista, Calif.; six grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. He was born in Worcester, son of William N. and Caroline (St. Jean) Dufresne. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II.

Mr. Dufresne was a toolmaker 43 years for the Rexnord Co., retiring in 1984.

He was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Church in Worcester, the Senior Citizens Club of Auburn, the Central Massachusetts Antique Auto Club, the Ford V-8 Auto Club of America, the Gaudet Kirk American Legion Post 138 in Spencer and the Frohsinn Club in Shrewsbury.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 4, in Holy Name of Jesus Church, 53 Illinois St., Worcester. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Mausoleum, Worcester. Calling hours are from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Eastern Mass., 36 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, 02140.

Henry F. Dymek Sr., 84

Edna B. Evarts, 92, was florist and horticulturist

WEST BOYLSTON -- Edna B. (Burke) Evarts, 92, of 76 North Main St., Oakdale, formerly of 9 Bell Arbor Drive, Paxton, died Monday, May 28, in the Oakdale Rehab and Nursing Center.

Her husband, Roy K. Evarts Sr., died in 1970. She leaves a son, Roy K. Evart of Northboro. Born in Cuttingsville, Vt., daughter of Francis and Gertrude (Murphy) Burke, he lived in Ridgewood, N.J., and 25 years in Paxton.

Mrs. Evarts was a florist. She was also a manager of 10 greenhouses for the Schweinfurth Florists in Ridgewood, N.J. She was a horticulturist and enjoyed sewing.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, June 1, in the First Congregational Church of West Boylston, 26 Central St. There are no calling hours. Graham, Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., Worcester, is directing funeral arrangements.

Ida Fantasia, 93

WORCESTER -- Ida (Pulcinelli) Fantasia, 93, of 370 Massasoit Road, died Friday, June 1, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a brief illness.

Her husband of more than 45 years, Louis A. Fantasia, died in 1972. She leaves two sons, Louis M. “Pinky” Fantasia of Worcester and David R. Fantasia, with whom she lived; two daughters, Anna D. “Dolly” Esposito and Sandra L. Babin, both of Worcester; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A grandson died in 1994. She was born in Giuliano Teatino, province of Chieti, Italy, daughter of Giuseppe and Rosina (Finocchio) Pulcinelli.Along with her husband, Mrs. Fantasia co-owned and operated F & G Sand, Gravel and Construction Co. in Worcester and Shrewsbury. She was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, and the Worcester Area Association of Retarded Citizens.The funeral will be held Monday, June 4, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Road. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 3, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Therapeutic Occupational Workshop, Stanley Road, Worcester, MA 01606.

Wesson C. Forsman Sr.

WORCESTER -- Wesson C. Forsman Sr., 89, of 15 Ivernia Road, a retired order filler, died Tuesday, May 29, in University Commons.

His wife of 53 years, Doris B. (Dubois) Forsman, died in 1993. He leaves a son, Wesson C. Forsman Jr. of Worcester; three brothers, Albert Forsman of West Yarmouth, Raymond Forsman of Feeding Hills, Agawam, and Robert Forsman of Wilbraham; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Born in Palmer, son of Carl J. and Anna C. (Peterson) Forsman, he lived 60 years in Worcester. He graduated from Springfield Trade High School in 1929. Mr. Forsman was an order filler 36 years in the stock department of the grinding wheel division of Norton Co., retiring in 1976. He was a member of Belmont Street Baptist Church, where he was a former trustee and building and grounds committee member. He was a member of Greendale Retired Men's Club.

The funeral service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Burial will be in All Faiths Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, in the funeral home. Please omit flowers. Leo R. Gamache, 59

OSAWATOMIE, Kan. -- Leo R. Gamache, 59, of Osawatomie, formerly of Worcester, Mass., died Wednesday, May 30, at the home of his daughter near Osawatomie.

He leaves his wife, Frances A. (Stevenson) Gamache; his son, Leo R. Gamache of Osawatomie; five daughters, Mary Ritch of Wagstaff, Kan., Lisa White of North Oxford, Mass., Jennifer Kalvinek of Webster, Mass., Renee Lofing and Sharon Hansen, both of Osawatomie; two brothers, Ronald Gamache of Sturbridge, Mass., and Rene Gamache of Los Oso, Calif.; 21 grandchildren. Three brothers, a sister and a daughter, Paige Gamache, predeceased him. Born in Worcester, son of Leopold and Anita Rivard Gamache, he also had lived in Monrovia, Calif., where he attended high school. He served in the Navy.Mr. Gamache, a machinist, had worked in Harrington-Richards, Charlton; McDonnell-Douglas, California; and Taylor-Forge, Paola. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union. He was also a carpenter.

A graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at Osawatomie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Children's Mercy Hospital or the Veterans Hospital at Leavenworth, Kan., c/o the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, PO Box 430 Osawatomie, KS 66064.

Irene B. Pelletier, 78

MANTECA, Calif. -- Irene B. (Kittredge) Pelletier, 78, formerly of 855 John Fitch Highway, Fitchburg, Mass., died Monday, June 4, in Palm Haven Care Center after an illness.

Her husband of 54 years, Raymond N. Pelletier, died in 1998. She leaves a son, Bernard R. “Bud” Pelletier of Manteca, with whom she lived; a daughter, Tammi M. Cadieux of Fitchburg; a brother, William P. Kittredge of Norwell, Mass.; a sister, Dorothy E. Taylor of Milton, Mass.; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; many nephews and nieces. A daughter, Ann-Marie Moody of Satellite Beach, Fla., died in 1976. She was born in Randolph, Mass., daughter of Robert H. and Lillian T. (Boucher) Kittredge, and moved to Fitchburg in 1944. She moved to Manteca in 1997. She graduated from Cambridge City Hospital in 1943. She was an Army Nursing Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines.

Mrs. Pelletier was head nurse of maternity at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg for many years, and for a number of years ran the infirmary at the Groton School in Groton, Mass. She was a member of the Cambridge Hospital Alumni Association, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 429, the Irish American Club, the Forever Young Club of Ashby, Mass., the Booster Club of Fitchburg, and St. Bernard's Church in Fitchburg.

The funeral will be held Saturday, June 9, from Lavery-Chartrand Funeral Home, 99 Summer St., Fitchburg, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 228 Water St., Fitchburg. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery, Fitchburg. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 8, and 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, June 9, in the funeral home.
