WORCESTER -- Alexandria (Joseph) Laska, 78, of 6 Colton St., a retired teacher's aide, died Tuesday, July 24, at her home.

She leaves her husband of 48 years, Thomas N. Laska; two sons, Robert C. Laska of Worcester and Philip T. Laska of Billerica; a daughter, Carol A. Laska of Worcester; two brothers, Stavri Joseph of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Sefi Joseph of Worcester; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Somerville, daughter of George and Olga (Kachka) Joseph, and lived 68 years in Worcester. She graduated from Worcester Girls Trade School in 1942.

Mrs. Laska was a teacher's aide for 15 years in the Worcester public schools, retiring in 1988. Previously, she was a dietary aide for six years at Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church and its Women's Guild.

The funeral will be held Saturday, July 28, from Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a service at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, in the funeral home. A Trisagion service will be held at 5 p.m. during the calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church Building Fund, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA 01609.

Barbara A. Jovan, 61, former nurse's aide
SOUTHBRIDGE -- Barbara A. (Adams) Jovan, 61, of 80 Highland St., a former nurse's aide, died Saturday, Aug. 4, in UMass Memorial Medical -- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness.

Her husband, John D. Jovan, died in 1994. She leaves three sons, John and Mark Jovan, both of Southbridge, and Michael Jovan of Holland; and six grandchildren. A sister, Lorraine Paquin, and her stepfather, Peter Crescenzo, both died this year. A grandson died in 1989. She was born in Putnam, daughter of Constance (Peloquin) Crescenzo, and lived most of her life in Southbridge. She graduated from Mary E. Wells High School.

Mrs. Jovan was a nurse's aide at Providence House Nursing Home and Harrington Memorial Hospital. She volunteered with the Boy Scouts and received the Silver beaver Award. She also taught ceramics out of her home.

The funeral will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8, from Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, 446 Main St. Burial will be in Holland Cemetery, Holland. Calling hours are 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the funeral home.

LEOMINSTER -- Annette V. (Houle) Joyal, 91, of 1160 Main St., a retired nurse, died Thursday, July 26, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after an illness.

Her husband of 58 years, Raymond Joyal, died in 1990. She leaves a son, Richard R. Joyal of Mashpee; a daughter, Rayanne McNally of Westminster; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Several brothers and sisters predeceased her. She was born in Gardner, daughter of Pierre and Elodia (Paquette) Houle, and lived many years in Leominster.

Mrs. Joyal was a registered nurse at Leominster Hospital, retiring in 1969. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Church and Leominster Senior Citizens.

A funeral will be held Monday, July 30, from M. A. Simard and Son Funeral Home, 14 Walker St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia's Church, 180 Mechanic St. Burial will be in St. Cecilia's Cemetery. Calling hours are 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 29, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Cecilia's Church Restoration Fund, 180 Mechanic St., Leominster, MA 01453; or may be left at the funeral home.

WORCESTER -- Albert M. Kane, 95, of Wildey Ave., a retired production expediter, died Tuesday, July 24, in Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

His wife, Edith (Rask) Kane, died in 1976. He leaves cousins. He was born in Worcester, son of Thomas and Mary (Haratty) Kane, and graduated from Commerce High School.

Mr. Kane was a production expediter at Heald Machine Co., where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1971. He was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church. He led a dance band in the 1930s called “The Georgians. ”

The funeral will be held Thursday, July 26, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 25 Fales St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. A calling hour will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, in the funeral home.

GARDNER -- Charles E. Keene, 55, of 133 Blanchard St., an automobile salesman, died Sunday, July 22, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus, Worcester, after a long illness.

He leaves two daughters, Rhonda A. Beaumont of Lunenburg and Holly L. Campbell of Baldwinville; three grandchildren. He was born in Gardner, son of Ernest S. and Minna E. (Zweckbronner) Keene. He was an Army veteran.

Mr. Keene was an automobile salesman with Gardner Auto Sales for many years.

He enjoyed drag racing, hot-rod auto restoration, and target shooting.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, in Crystal Lake Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Lamoureux-Fletcher Community Funeral Home, 105 Central St., is directing arrangements.

STURBRIDGE -- Clarence H. Keith, 86, of Pine Ave., a former correspondent, died Thursday, July 26, in Harrington Hospital.

His wife of 51 years, Barbara L. (Wood) Keith died in 1999. He leaves two sons, David H. Keith of Whitefish, Mont. and Robert W. Keith of Pelham; two daughters, Patricia Banas of Fiskdale and Deborah Stevens of Holland; a brother, Forrest A. Keith of South Yarmouth; and five grandchildren. He was born in the Bondsville section of Palmer, son of Jason H. and Edna B. (Taylor) Keith, and lived in Brimfield from 1920 until 1991 when he moved to Sturbridge.

Mr. Keith was a foreign correspondent with American Optical for 37 years, retiring in 1972. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Brimfield and served as the Brimfield Town Treasurer for ten years. He was also a member and past member of the Quaboag Lodge of Masons in Warren.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4 in the First Congregational Church of Brimfield. An evergreen and burial service will follow in Brimfield Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Donations may be made to First Congregational Church, Main St., Brimfield, MA 01010. Beers and Story Palmer Funeral Home, 1475 North Main St., Palmer, is directing arrangements.

WEST BOYLSTON -- Frank W. Kimball Jr., 80, of 4 Nevada Drive, a longtime Wyman-Gordon employee, died Monday, Aug. 6, in the Hospice Residence of Worcester, after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Beatrice C. (Pearson) Kimball; two daughters, Beverly Vogel of Holden and Barbara Erickson of Tampa, Fla. ; a brother, Harold Kimball of Sterling; a sister, Hazel Lantz of Charlton; six grandchildren. He was born in Worcester, son of Frank W. and Myrtle E. (Sampson) Kimball Sr., and lived in West Boylston for 49 years.

Mr. Kimball was a World War II veteran.

He worked at the former Wyman-Gordon Co., Worcester, for 40 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Salem Covenant Church, Worcester, the Boylston Lodge A. F. and A. M., a life member of the American Legion Post no. 204, the Greendale Men's Club Chorus, and others men's and church's choirs. He was a former member of the Mendelssohn Singers.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain St., Worcester. Burial will be private in Hillside Cemetery, Auburn. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Fund at Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain St., Worcester, MA 01606. Graham, Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors, 838 Main St., Worcester, is directing arrangements.

Corinne L. Klarner, 88

CLINTON -- Corinne L. (Jewett) Klarner, 88, formerly of 309 Church St., a retired hospital worker, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Westridge Healthcare, Marlboro, after an illness.

She leaves a daughter, Cynthia Nieves of Clinton; a son, Walter E. Klarner Jr. of Mission, Kan. ; and two grandsons, Jeffrey Nieves and Jeremy Klarner, both of Clinton. She was born in Clinton, daughter of Theodore and Mabel (Manley) Jewett, and graduated from Clinton High School.

She worked in the housekeeping department at Clinton Hospital before retiring. She enjoyed music.

The graveside service will be held at the family's convenience in Woodlawn Cemetery. There are no calling hours. James E. Watson Funeral Home, 149 Water St., is directing arrangements.

Josef Klaus, 91; was Austrian chancellor

Josef Klaus, 91; was Austrian chancellor
VIENNA, Austria -- Former Austrian Chancellor Josef Klaus, who led the government from 1964 to 1970, died yesterday. He was 91.

Klaus was born Aug. 15, 1910, in the province of Carinthia. He earned his doctorate in law in 1934, and worked for several years as a lawyer in Salzburg.

In 1961, Klaus, who had joined the center-right People's Party, was appointed finance minister. Two years later, he was elected chairman of his party and went on to become chancellor in 1964.

In a letter of condolence yesterday, Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel praised Klaus' efforts to modernize Austria's economy.

Klaus is survived by four children.

WORCESTER -- Kenneth R. Kohlstrom, 71, of 74 Seymour St., died Friday, Aug. 3, in UMass Memorial Medical Center -- Memorial Campus after an illness.

His wife, Bertha A. (Young) Kohlstrom, died in 1971. He leaves two sons, Orall E. “Geno” Peabody of Worcester and David N. Peabody of Barre; three daughters, Patricia M. Collette of Holden, Dawn M. LeClaire of Worcester, and Eve M. Yarmosh of Northampton; two brothers, Rudy F. Kohlstrom of Holden and Robert L. Kohlstrom of Leominster; two sisters, Phyllis Barrow of Lunenburg and Gloria Valiquette of Worcester; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Three sons, Henry and Kenneth Kohlstrom, and J. Michael Dumas, predeceased him. He was born in Holden, son of Rudolph F. and Marie A. (Maxfield) Kohlstrom, and lived 48 years there. He graduated from Holden High School in 1948. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War, serving as a radio man in the Pacific.

Mr. Kohlstrom was a metallurgist 33 years at Wyman-Gordon Co. in Grafton, retiring in 1989.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars South Works Post, American Legion Vernon Hill Post, the Greendale Retired Men's Club, the Holden Senior Society and the Republican National Committee. He enjoyed dancing and traveling.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, in the funeral home. Donations may be made to a charity.
