Dr. Elijah B. Romanoff, 88, chemistry teacher

SHRERWSBURY -- Dr. Elijah B. Romanoff, 88, of 70 Prospect St., a World War II veteran, died Saturday, Nov. 24, at home.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Louise P. (Parker) Romanoff, and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Saul Romanoff, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton, son of Harry and Rae (Bravman) Romanoff, and lived many years in Shrewsbury. He graduated from Clinton High School and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He earned a medical degree from Tufts University. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific.

Mr. Romanoff taught chemistry at Shrewsbury High School for many years. Previously, he worked as a program director at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C., and as a senior scientist at the Worcester Center for Experimental Biology for 20 years. He received the National Science Foundation's Silver Medal for Excellence in 1982. His work was published in many science journals. He was a member of the Endocrine Society and the American Society for the Advancement of Science.

A private graveside service will be held in Mountain View Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., is directing.

Sarah H. Sheehy, 84
Tuesday, November 27, 2001

GRAFTON -- Sarah H. (Canfield) Sheehy, 84, of 4 Westview St., died Sunday, November 25, in Beaumont Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, Northbridge.

Her husband of 40 years, Leo L. Sheehy Sr., died in 1978. She leaves three sons, Leo L. Sheehy Jr. of Worcester, Roger C. Sheehy of Goffstown, N.H. and Neil A. Sheehy of Scotia, N.Y.; a daughter, Patricia M. Sheehy of Grafton; six grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A son, Michael Sheehy, two brothers, Earl and Chet Canfield, and a sister, Mary Pokorny, predeceased her. She was born in Canajoharie, N.Y., daughter of George and Eliza Canfield, and moved Grafton in 1966. She graduated from Canajoharie Central and High School, Canajoharie, New York.

Mrs. Sheehy was a Scout leader for both the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts of Grafton. She was an avid golfer and was a member of the Women's Golf League of Canajoharie Country Club. She was also active at St. Philip's Church's craft fair. She enjoyed gardening and was a seamstress.

The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 29, from The Robert C. Roney Funeral Home, 152 Worcester Street, North Grafton, with a Mass at 10 am. in St. Philip's Church, corner of Church and West Streets. Burial will follow in St. Philip's Cemetery. Calling hours are 5 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, November 28, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimers Association, 1 Kendall Square, Bldg. 600, Cambridge, MA 02139.

Shirley A. Siciliano, 66
Friday, November 30, 2001

FITCHBURG -- Shirley A. Siciliano, 66, of 72 Glen Ave., a retired manager, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital, after a brief illness.

She leaves her husband of 45 years, Leon S. Siciliano; two sons, Lee J. and Alexander S. Siciliano, both of Fitchburg; and a grandchild. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Edmond and Madeline (Doherty) McNally. She graduated from Fitchburg High School in 1953, and later attended airline attendant school in Minneapolis.

Mrs. Siciliano was an office manager at several local insurance agencies, including Leo Glickman Insurance Co., the James Gaffney Insurance Co. and the Foster-Healy Insurance Co. She also worked in the courtesy department at Shaw's Supermarkets, retiring in 1995. She was a member of St. Bernard's Church and the Fitchburg Friendship Club.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from Brandon Funeral Home, 305 Wanoosnoc Road, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, 240 Water St. Burial will be in St. Bernard's Cemetery. Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the funeral home.

Robert St. Onge Sr., 70
Sunday, November 25, 2001

WORCESTER -- Robert A. St. Onge Sr., 70, of 53 Malden St., a Korean War veteran, died Friday, Nov. 23, in St. Vincent Hospital at Worcester Medical Center after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 49 years, Margaret R. (Pazzaneze) St. Onge; a son, Robert A. St. Onge Jr. of Worcester; a daughter, Rita M. St. Onge of Worcester; a brother, Herman St. Onge of Webster; three sisters, Irene Alukas and Theresa Gentile, both of Worcester and Evelyn Carr of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Fitchburg, son of Herman and Isabel St. Onge, and lived several years in Marlboro before moving to Worcester 40 years ago. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and served later in the Army Reserves.

Mr. St. Onge worked 43 years as an assembler for Wright Line Co., Worcester, retiring in 1993. He was a member of St. Christopher's Parish.

A funeral will be held Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Marlboro. Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, in the funeral home.

John F. Sullivan, 80
Wednesday, November 28, 2001

AUBURN -- John F. Sullivan, 80, of 20 Loring St., formerly of New Boston Road, Sturbridge, died Sunday, Nov. 25, in the Hospice Residence, Worcester, after an illness.

His wife, Josephine N. (Tucci) Sullivan, died in 1995. He leaves two sons, Francis J. Sullivan of Clinton and Dennis J. Sullivan of Miami; a daughter, Lorna Sullivan-Roland of Webster; a brother, Arthur J. Sullivan of California; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was born in Tewksbury, son of John and Mary Sullivan, and lived many years in Sturbridge before moving to Auburn. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

Mr. Sullivan was a salesman for Henry Camosse & Sons, retiring in 1992.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Southbridge. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, is directing.

Vivian M. Albert, 77
Sunday, November 25, 2001

LEOMINSTER -- Vivian M. (Sciabarrasi) Albert, 77, of 15 Franklin St., died Friday, Nov. 23, in HealthAlliance -- Leominster Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 55 years, Robert C. Albert; two sons, Douglas Albert and Christopher Albert, both of Leominster; a sister, Jean Hovey of Michigan; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

There are no funeral services. Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., is directing arrangements.

Lillian J. Bourque, 82
Monday, November 26, 2001

FITCHBURG -- Lillian J. Bourque, 82, of 3 Stanley St., died Saturday, Nov. 24, in Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She leaves seven brothers, Henry J., Emile J., Raymond R., Robert J., and Rene J. Bourque, all of Fitchburg, Leo J. Bourque of South Yarmouth and Francis R. Bourque of Newport News, Va.; six sisters, Lina Morin, Yvonne Bourque, Marguerite Forest, Alice Varga and Beatrice Leger, all of Fitchburg, and Blanche Methot of San Jose, Calif. A sister, Louise Dahart, and a brother, Arthur Bourque, predeceased her. She was born in Fitchburg, daughter of Edmond and Elmire (Goguen) Bourque.

Miss Bourque worked at the former H. Margolin Co., the former S&E Manufacturing Co., and Hedstrom Union Co., retiring in 1977.

She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the St. Joseph School Association. She enjoyed reading.

The funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday, Nov. 28, in St. Joseph Church, 49 Woodland St. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. A calling period is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, in Louis M. Isabelle Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon St. Donations may be made to St. Joseph School, 35 Columbus St., Fitchburg, MA 01420.

Beatrice T. Brewer, 76
Thursday, November 29, 2001

WORCESTER -- Beatrice T. (Martin) Brewer, 76, of 111 Country Club Blvd., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, at home.

She leaves her husband of 56 years, Herbert A. Brewer; a son, Hebert A. "Skip" Brewer of Worcester; a daughter, Susan B. Goodrich of Leominster; a brother, Peter T. Martin Jr. of Worcester; a sister Rita Flint of Worcester; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A daughter, Patricia Ann St. Germain of Auburn, died in 1997. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Peter T. and Mae (Carvill) Martin, and graduated from Commerce High School in 1942.

Mrs. Brewer was a clerk in the accounting office several years at Norton Co.

She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, in Nordgren, Carrigan, Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Klaus J. Cathrein, 72; POW, business owner
Thursday, November 29, 2001

LANCASTER -- Klaus J. "Nick" Cathrein, 72, of 89 Narrow Lane, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, in HealthAlliance Leominster Hospital after a brief illness.

He leaves three daughters, Deborah Doyle of Lancaster, Leslie Wasel of Clinton, and Karen Esformes of Leominster; a brother, Karl Cathrein of Soquel, Calif.; seven grandchildren. He was born in Heilbronn, Germany, son of Karl and Freida Cathrein, and attended schools in Germany. At the age of 16, he became a prisoner of war in an American camp in Heilbronn. Then he began working at a U.S. Army base in Germany, where he worked in a variety of positions, eventually coordinating the refurbishment of all officers' quarters and apartment buildings on base. He remained at the U.S. base for 10 years.

Upon moving to Massachusetts, he worked at the former Altman Bros. Furniture Co. of Clinton for several years. He then became owner and operator of Betty-Jane's Donut Shop on High Street in Clinton, where he remained for 23 years before retiring.

He was a member and trustee of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Leominster, where he also served as bar manager until the time of his death.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in Robert J. McNally Funeral Home, 304 Church Street, Clinton. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the funeral home.

Mary A. Clifford, 89
Thursday, November 29, 2001

WORCESTER -- Mary A. (Casey) Clifford, 89, of 1029 Pleasant St., died Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the Hospice Residence.

Her husband, Michael U. Clifford, died in 1956. She leaves a daughter, Carol A. Moynihan of Worcester; two sons, Kevin C. Clifford of Auburn and Brian D. Clifford of Centerville; a daughter, Carol A. Moynihan of Worcester; nine grandchildren; a great-grandson. A son, Richard M. Clifford of Shrewsbury, died in 1986. She was born in Worcester, daughter of John and Ida (Lamberton) Casey, and spent many summers on Cape Cod. She graduated from Commerce High School and the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing.

She was a registered nurse, and worked many years in Worcester area hospitals and nursing homes, including Providence House. She also did private duty nursing in the Worcester area and on Cape Cod. Many years ago, she assisted her husband in establishing the Boston Liquor Mart Inc. in Worcester.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant St. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VNA Hospice Care Inc., 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608.

Maria L. Merly Cotto
Wednesday, November 28, 2001

WORCESTER -- Maria L. (Arroyo) Merly Cotto, 66, of 49 Pleasant Valley Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 25, at UMass Memorial Medical Center -- University Campus.

She leaves four sons, Jose L., Raphael and Angel Merly, all of Worcester, and Rene Cotto of St. Albans, Vt.; three daughters, Carmen S. Webb of Worcester, Candida Lemanski of Clinton and Maria D. Quiles of Puerto Rico; three brothers, Jacinto Arroyo of Auburn, and Francisco and Edwin Arroyo, both of Worcester; four sisters, Flora and Felicita Arroyo, both of Connecticut, and Susana and Lucia Arroyo, both of Worcester; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. A son, Juan Merly, died in 1999. She was born in Cayey, Puerto Rico, daughter of Higinio and Candida (Vega) Arroyo, and has lived in Worcester for 35 years. She attended Quinsigamond Community College for two years.

Mrs. Cotto was a nutrition worker at area nursing homes, retiring several years ago. Previously, she taught nutrition classes at Anna Maria College and worked at the Worcester Court of Deeds. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church.

The funeral will be held from Nordgren Carrigan Mangsen Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St., with a Mass at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in St. Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, in the funeral home.

Michael Demma, 62
Sunday, November 25, 2001

WORCESTER -- Michael Demma, 62, of 13 South Ward St., died, Saturday, Nov. 24, in his home after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 33 years, Janina (Opielowski) Demma; his mother, Kaliopi (Gero) Demma of Worcester; two brothers, Arthur C. Demma of Worcester and Samuel C. Demma of the Jefferson section of Holden; a sister: Joanne V. Prizio of Boylston; nieces and nephews. He was born in Southbridge, son of Christo A. Demma. He graduated from South High, Worcester Junior College and attended Clark University. He played football for South High School and in 1957 earned Telegram and Gazette all-city honors. He served in Army reserves.

Mr. Demma worked 17 years in the parts depot of the Ford motor assembly plant in Framingham before retiring. He was a member of St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, where he was one of the original altar boys. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union.

The funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 26, from Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation St., with a Mass at noon in St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. The are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 643 Worcester MA 01613-0643.
