CATHERINE L. DENEEN
CUMBERLAND - Catherine Louise Deneen, 70, of Cumberland, has gone to Heaven to be with the Lord she served on Thursday, Sept. 24, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 30, 1928, in Allegany County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Angwin (Thomas) McFarlane.

Mrs. Deneen was a homemaker. She was a very active member of First Church of the Nazarene, Oldtown Road, Cumberland. Her hobbies included reading, crafts and raising flowers. Hospital staff and friends knew her as "The Flower Lady" for she was always bringing bouquets from her yard to comfort others.

Surviving are her husband, Homer D. Deneen; one son, the Rev. Mark L. Deneen and wife Marlene, Niles, Ohio; three daughters, Dayle L. Jacobs and husband Harold "Buck," Cumberland, Trinka J. Schevlin and husband the Rev. Kirk Schevlin, Brick, N.J., and Lisa B. Orndorff, Lexington, Ky.; four sisters, Evelyn Deneen and husband Clarence, Nashville, Tenn., Helen Stevens, Cumberland, Jean Cuppett and husband Otis, Cumberland, and Dorothy Dell and husband William, Atlanta, Ga.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral services will be conducted at the First Church of the Nazarene, Cumberland, Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Gary Barkley officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the First Church of the Nazarene.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

JAMES W. CRAWFORD
HAGERSTOWN - James William "Bill" Crawford, 75, of Crest Drive, Hagerstown, formerly of Little Orleans, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at his home.
Born Nov. 30, 1922, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James M. and Gladys (Lashley) Crawford. He also was preceded in death by one sister, L. Jean Shanholtz; and one stepbrother, Robert Conry.

Mr. Crawford retired in 1984 from Fairchild Industries as an inspector. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Potomac Post 202 American Legion, Williamsport; Harry D. Ziegler Post 6319 VFW, Greencastle, Pa.; Sportsmans Association, Greencastle; James W. Bowers Lodge 173 AF & AM, Hancock; Ithiel Chapter 27 R.A.M., Hagerstown; Palestine Council 16 R & SM, Hagerstown; St. Bernard Commandry 9 Knights Templar, Hagerstown; Hagerstown Forest 95 Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Ali Ghan Shrine Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Cumberland; and the Hagerstown Shrine Club.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Gloria (Oakman) Crawford, Hagerstown; one daughter, Sheila D. Hiteshue, Hagerstown; and two grandsons, James W. Hiteshue and Scott L. Hiteshue, both of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Masonic service will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home by the James W. Bowers Lodge 173 AF & AM, Hancock.

Services will be held at the Fairview Christian Church, Artemas, Pa., on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 1998, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Milton Morris officiating.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery with graveside rites accorded by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

EMORY CRITES, JR.
CUMBERLAND - Mr. Emory Crites, Jr., 75, of 6 East Roberts St., Cumberland, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, having been ill for several years.
Born in Cumberland on March 25, 1922, he was the son of the late Emory Crites Sr., and the late Edith (Frantz) Crites. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Boyd Crites; and a sister, Mary Cornett.

Mr. Crites was a retired employee of Potomac Farms Milk Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, and a member of Local #453 Teamsters Union.

Surviving are his wife, Betty (Atkinson) Crites; three sons, Emory Boyd Crites and wife Marvina, Cumberland, Lynn Eugene Crites, Gary Steven Crites and wife, Debbie, Oldtown; two daughters, Deborah Diane Crites, Baltimore, and Lynn Faye Ritchie and husband, Robert, Cumberland; one brother, William Crites, California; three sisters, Greta Beightol, Winchester, Va., Shirley Shahada, Washington, D.C., Betty Caparosi, Cumberland; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Crites' wishes were that he be cremated at the Cumberland Crematory. No services are scheduled at this time.

Arrangements were made by the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.

JOHN H. AMBROSE
DEEP CREEK LAKE - John H. Ambrose, 65, of Deep Creek Lake, died on Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at his home.
He was born July 27, 1932, in Cumberland, and was a son of the late Perry R. Ambrose and Rosemarie (Stegmaier) Ambrose. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy (Knapp) Ambrose, in 1988.

Mr. Ambrose was the owner and operator of JG's Pub at Deep Creek Lake.

He had previously been a salesman for SRA, a subsidiary of IBM, for 20 years. Prior to that he taught physical science in Prince George's County for 10 years. Mr. Ambrose was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Frostburg State University, and the University of Maryland. He also served in the U.S. Army with the 441st Counter Intelligence Corps in Tokyo.

He was a member of the Alsatia Club of Hagerstown and Proctor Kildow Post #71 American Legion. He also served as president of the Deep Creek Lake Investment Corporation.

He is survived by one son, Thomas P. Ambrose, with the U.S. Navy in San Diego; one daughter, Kathryn Collins, and her husband, Fred, of Deep Creek Lake; one brother, Robert B. Ambrose, Cheverly; two grandchildren, John Thomas Collins and Stephen Michael Collins.

According to Mr. Ambrose's wishes, his body has been donated to the Maryland Anatomical Board. A memorial service will be conducted at JG's Pub on Monday at 7 p.m. with Dallas W. House Jr. officiating.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial take the form of contributions to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department or to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.

The Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, is in charge of arrangements.

MILDRED V. CRITES
CUMBERLAND - Mildred V. "Midge" Crites, 71, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1926, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Henry Dahl Sr. and Ella Mae (Collins) Dahl. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Dahl.

Mrs. Crites worked as a waitress for the B&O; YMCA for 25 years. She was Protestant by faith.

Surviving are one son, William D. Crites and fiancee Opal McDonald, Cumberland; one daughter, Christine Crites Rhoe and husband James, Ridgeley, W.Va.; three brothers, Roger Dahl, Somerset, Pa., Daniel Dahl Jr., Cumberland, and Norman Dahl, Cumberland; four sisters, Dorothy Ryan, Cumberland, Doris Dahl, California, Nancy Swanner, Cumberland, and Delores Herrell and husband Allen, Potomac Park, Cumberland; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Graveside services will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland, Saturday at 10 a.m. with Pastor J. Gary Butler officiating.

ALVA H. BROADWATER
SWANTON - Alva H. Broadwater, 81, of Broadwater cemetery Road, Swanton, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, Grantsville, where he had been a resident.
Born Nov. 12, 1916, at Savage River, he was the son of the late Jonas and Edith Broadwater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethel (Rounds) Broadwater; one brother; and three sisters.

Mr. Broadwater was retired from the B&O; Railroad, and was a farmer. He was a member of the Dunkard Brethren Church, Broadwater Chapel, Savage River Road.

He is survived by his wife, Olive (Mayhew) Miller Broadwater; one stepson, Donald Miller and wife, Becky, Keyser; four stepdaughters, Delores Custer and husband, Paul, Barton, Marion Hanlin, Westernport, Darla Walters and husband, Michael, Baltimore, Sharon Wilhelm, Avilton; two sisters, Sadie Wilt, Loch Lynn, and Lavada Bittinger, Rawlings; 15 step grandchildren; and 17 step great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with Elder Virgil Leatherman and Elder Gene Kauffman officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
