NETTIE E. CUTTER
MIDLAND - Nettie Elizabeth Cutter, 92, of Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport, died Aug. 11, 1998, at the nursing home. Formerly of Midland, she has been a resident there for five years.
Born Sept. 14, 1905, in Rodamer, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Jahue Buckalew and Rebecca (Buckalew) Buckalew. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, Arch Buckalew and Raymond Buckalew; and three sisters, Esther Sweitzer, Elva Buckalew and Nellie Freeland; and two grandsons.
She was formerly employed at Footer's Dye Works and Celanese Fibers Corporation.
Surviving are one son, Clyde D. Cook, Oldtown; one grandson, Donald R. Cook; two nieces and one nephew.
At her request her body was donated to the Anatomical Board of Maryland.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are being handled by Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing.
CARL O. APPEL
HANCOCK - Carl O. Appel, 59, of West Main Street, Hancock, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Aug. 27, 1938, in Little Orleans, he was the son of the late John C. and Malesta H. Martin Appel.
He was retired in September 1994 as a heavy equipment operator working from Local 37 Operating Engineers. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1960. He attended the Martin Methodist Church in Little Orleans. He was a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post #26 American Legion, Hancock, a member of the Loyal Order of Moose #348, Frostburg, and a member of the Hancock Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Amy J. Boone Appel, Hancock, whom he married
Nov. 5, 1958, in New Market; two daughters, Donna L. Smith and Darcel J. Breeden, both of Hancock; three sons, David C. Appel, Chaneysville, Pa., Anthoney W. Appel, Flintstone, and Alan J. Appel, Hancock; three brothers, Robert B. Appel, Frederick, Leo F. Appel, Cumberland, and Paul J. Appel, Cresaptown; two granddaughters; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by one son, Carl A. Appel; one sister, Mildred Chaney; two brothers, John W. Appel Sr., and Earl Appel.
Services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, with the Rev. Walter Brown officiating. Burial will be in the Piney Plains United Methodist cemetery, Little Orleans.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. For convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Friday.
GEORGE "FRED" APPEL
HANCOCK - George "Fred" Appel, 62, of Hancock, formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
Born Jan. 3, 1936, in Cumberland, he was the son of Leo and Georgie (McFarland) Appel, Cumberland.
He was a 1954 graduate of Fort Hill High School.
Mr. Appel was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he had been the Chief Flight Steward on Air Force I from 1958 through 1974. He served Presidents Eisenhower through Nixon.
Following his retirement from the Air Force, Mr. Appel and his wife had owned and operated the Appel Tree Inn.
He was a member of the Cumberland Country Club.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Dona Jean (Brown) Appel; five sons, Gary Lee Appel and wife, Nadine, Hancock, Frederick Scott Appel and wife, Denise, Hagerstown, Steven Alan Appel and wife, Maryland, Cumberland, Mark Thomas Appel and wife, Patti, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Kirk Douglas Appel and wife, Sherrie, Hancock; four brothers, Gary Appel and John Appel, both of Cumberland, Harold Appel, Ridgeley, W.Va., and Leo Appel, Cumberland; four sisters, Ina Rae McGregor, Cumberland, Myrtle Gay, Jefferson, Ga., Carolyn Meagher, Cumberland, and Patricia Maddy, LaVale; and 12 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Timothy McGregor officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans cemetery, Rocky Gap.
Military honors will be accorded by the combined veterans honor guard.
M. CORETTA DAVIS
CUMBERLAND - M. Coretta Davis, 84, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at her residence.
Born Aug. 8, 1913, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Esther (Grimm) Davis. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Miss Davis was retired as an elementary school teacher. She was a first grade teacher at Pennsylvania Avenue and Johnson Heights elementary schools. She was a graduate of Pennsylvania Avenue High School and Frostburg State Teachers College. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; McKinley Chapter 12 Order of the Eastern Star; and various educational organizations.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Funeral and committal services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at noon with the Rev. James L. McMahan officiating.
Interment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery.
CHARLES R. CRAMER
RAWLINGS - Charles Richard Cramer, 83, of Claremont Nursing Home, Carlisle, Pa., formerly of Rawlings, died Friday, Jan. 16, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born May 22, 1914, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles R. and Carrie (Bender) Cramer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nettie Idella Cramer, 1989; one brother; and one sister.
Mr. Cramer was a retired brakeman for the B & O Railroad. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Bedford Road Baptist Church and a member of the Fort Cumberland Masonic Lodge #211 A.F. & A.M.
Surviving are two sons, Charles R. Cramer, Jr., and wife, Rosemary, York Springs, Pa., Kenneth L. Cramer and wife, Christine, Enola, Pa.; two daughters, Barbara A. Wilson and husband, Chester, Mountain View, AK, Shirley L. Calhoun and husband, Mark, Tyrone, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren, Crystal Rawson, Julie Cramer, Cynthia Cramer, Kenneth Cramer, Kevin Cramer, Brenda Wilson, Belinda Wilson, Clifford Wilson, Shelley Breeden, and Gordon Ingram.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Masonic Service will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Merdith C. Shryock officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
JAMES B. BRODERICK SR.
FROSTBURG - James B. Broderick Sr., 86, formerly of 123 Pine St., Frostburg, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Jan. 4, 1912, in Avilton, he was the son of the late Ethel Broderick. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma E. Broderick, on Aug. 25, 1998.
Mr. Broderick was retired from the spinning department of the Celanese Fibers Corp. after 35 years of service. He was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ, Frostburg.
Surviving are one son, James B. Broderick Jr., Meyersdale, Pa.; one daughter, Shirley Linn, Kemp Drive, Frostburg; one brother, Joseph "Jerry" Broderick, California; two sisters, Anna Pressman, Frostburg, and Helen Durst, Grantsville; two grandsons, Troy Linn, Frostburg, and Tyler Broderick, Meyersdale; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
At Mr. Broderick's request, his body was donated to the Maryland Anatomical Board.
A memorial service will be conducted at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday at 6 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence A. Neumark officiating.
Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Inurnment will be held at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park.
