MAURICE S. "BROOK" BROOKHART JR.
OAKLAND - Garrett County lost a good friend and outstanding public servant in the passing of Maurice S. Brookhart Jr., "Brook," of 119 W. Pennington Street in Oakland, Sunday, September 6, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Cumberland.
He was born on May 12, 1915, in Forest Hills, Maryland, to Sarah Durham and Maurice Solomon Brookhart. After his mother's death and his father's remarriage, he supported himself from the age of fifteen. He graduated from a business college in Baltimore and shortly after joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) which brought him to Garrett County - his home for more than sixty years. He was always proud of being a "CCC boy" and grateful for what the program provided him and other young men of the Depression Era.

In Grantsville, in the mid-1930s, he met his future wife, Miss Martha Maurene Engle. They were married on November 19, 1938. They moved from Grantsville to Oakland where their son was born in 1942.

Brook served in the U.S. Navy in Panama during World War II. After returning to civilian life, he and Claude Stanton opened the Garrett Truck and Implement Company where they sold International Harvester. For many years they were located in the building they constructed on Highway 219, the building now occupied by Revco. When the business was sold in the mid-1960s, Brook joined the Garrett National Bank (today American Trust). He retired as Vice-President and Cashier in the late 1970s. Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s he remained professionally active doing real estate appraisals for the Veterans Administration.

In his six decades in Garrett County, he contributed in countless ways to his many friends and to his community through his service in such organizations as Boy Scouts of America, St. Paul's Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Elks, American Legion, Knights of Pythias and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served on the Garrett County Board of Education in the 1950s, ran for the State Senate on the Democratic ticket in 1962, and at the time of his death, was serving on the Oakland Planning Commission. He received the Citizen of the Year Award from the Rotary Club of Oakland in 1977, the Democrat Award for Exemplary Service from Garrett County Democrats in 1991, and a silver cup inscribed "`Brookie' A True `Friend of Scouting' and Potomac Council 1997."

He is survived by his son, Maurice S. Brookhart III and his daughter-in-law, Mary Hughes Brookhart, of Chapel Hill, N.C., his grandson, Maurice Alan Brookhart, of Carrboro, N.C., and his granddaughter, Susan Kemper Brookhart, of Portland, Ore., and his devoted caregiver, Charlene Copeland and her family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-eight years. As one of his lifelong friends, Mrs. James Helbig (Nancy) said, "When you saw Brookie you knew you were going to laugh. He brightened the day."

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.
