EDWARD J. JACKSON
LAVALE - Edward John Jackson, died at his residence in LaVale on Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, following a two-year illness.
Born in Frostburg, Maryland, on Aug. 11, 1926, he was the son of the late John and Alice McDonald Jackson. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Jackson; a sister, Esther Jackson; and a brother-in-law, Michael Byrnes.

Mr. Jackson was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, for 52 years, and was a current member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland. He retired in 1994 as Vice President of Queen City Electric Company, Cumberland, with whom he was associated for 46 years.

He was a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Frostburg Council 1442; and a U.S. Army veteran and member of the American Legion Farrady Post 24, Frostburg.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Carroll Jackson; daughters, Susan Athey and husband Mark Wickham, Fort Collins, Colo., and Carol Athey Tabler, Cumberland; sisters, Mary R. Jackson, Frostburg, Marguerite Byrnes, Lutherville, and Catherine Thompson and husband James, Rockville; a grandson, Joshua Zembower; granddaughter, Jennifer Tabler; and a number of nephews and nieces.

He also is survived by caring, competent sitters who made his stay at home possible and comfortable.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A Christian Wake service will be conducted by the Rev. Father William Moody and attended by Knights of Columbus, Frostburg Council 1442, on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at 11 a.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Father William Moody as celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Michael's Catholic Church cemetery, Frostburg. Military rites will be accorded at the cemetery by the American Legion Post 24, Frostburg.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Jackson to St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 201 N. Centre St., Cumberland, MD 21502 or to the St. Michael's Catholic Church, 44 E. Main St., Frostburg, MD 21532.

HAZEL IRENE JACKSON
CUMBERLAND - Hazel Irene Jackson, 86, of 524 Fort Ave., Cumberland, died Sunday, June 21, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 7, 1912, in Beryl, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Walker and the late Edith (Davis) Walker Larimer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Irvin Jackson, on March 18, 1996; a daughter, Joy Paupe, in 1995; a granddaughter, Mary Ann Paupe; two sisters, Virginia Steppe and Bess Files; and a brother, Edward Walker.

Mrs. Jackson was a loving, devoted mother and wife. She was the oldest charter member of the First Christian Church.

Surviving are a son, Lonnie R. Jackson, and wife, Barbara, Wiley Ford, W.Va.; a daughter, Delores Jean Miller, and husband, Ivan, Washington, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Genevieve Walker, Cumberland; a brother-in-law, Lloyd Files, Cumberland; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Walker, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Daniel Taylor officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hospice Unit at Memorial Hospital.

FRANCIS A. KENNEY
CUMBERLAND - Francis Anthony Kenney, 82, of Cumberland, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, at his residence.
Born Oct. 10, 1915, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Mary Elizabeth (Counihan) and James Patrick Kenney Sr. He also was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Ignaious Loyal Kenney, James P. Kenney Jr., Mary Catherine Snyder and Bernard Michael Kenney.

Mr. Kenney was the manager of the Maryland Employment Insurance Office of Cumberland for 22 years. He was Chief of Benefits Unemployment Insurance Agency and named to that post in 1972, assistant director Maryland Unemployment Insurance Agency in 1974, and director in 1975, worked 36 years for the Maryland Unemployment Insurance Agency, and retired July 1, 1977.

He was a 1935 graduate of Beall High School and a graduate of Frostburg State University where he received his bachelor and master's degrees in education.

Mr. Kenney was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and former member of the parish council; member of Cumberland Rotary where he was president in 1964 and 1965, and Paul Harris Fellow of that organization; member of Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council 586 Chief Justice Taney 4th Degree; served on the board of visitors for Frostburg State University; was past board member of Allegany County Nursing Home; former member and past chairman City of Cumberland Civil Service Commission; and past member of Appalachian Regional Council.

He was a former member of the board of directors of City, County and State Employee Credit Union; former president and district representative for International Association of Personnel and Employment Security; member six years for the Maryland State Guard 1941-1946; and member and former board member of Allegany County Chamber of Commerce. While on Chamber, he served as chairman of Trans Communication and was responsible for initiating proposal to build Interstate 68 from Morgantown to Hancock. He was the host to Lyndon B. Johnson's Presidential visit to Cumberland in 1964, and he was former board member of Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation.

Surviving are his wife, Lena (Georg) Kenney; one son, James Patrick Kenney III, Aiea, Hawaii; one daughter, Frances Ann Kenney, Richmond, Va.; three brothers, John Paul Kenney and wife Eleanor, and Joseph Egan Kenney and wife Terry, all of Frostburg, and Raymond P. Kenney, Billings, Mont.; one sister, Rita Kenney, Frostburg; and four grandchildren, J. Patrick Kenney IV, Denver, Colo., Nicole Kenney, Honolulu, Hawaii, Lena Marie Montoya and Miguel Montoya, both of Richmond, Va.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held Thursday at 9 p.m. with the Knights of Columbus participating.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

PHILIP J. JENKINS
FROSTBURG - Philip J. Jenkins, 75, of Frostburg, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at his residence.
Born Nov. 12, 1922, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late William E. and Bessie (Sleeman) Jenkins. He also was preceded in death by three brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Doris (Hoffman) Jenkins; two daughters, Ann Rose and Cathy MacFawn; four grandchildren; one brother, Jonathan R. Jenkins, Frostburg; and three sisters, Gladys Wheeldon, Richmond, Va., Isabel Bell, Baltimore, and Wilton Young, Cumberland.

Mr. Jenkins attended Beall High School and was a graduate of the University of Michigan with a B.S.E. in Aeronautical Engineering. He served in World War II with the United States Marine Corps. He was associated with his father and brothers in the coal business, and he was president of The Maryland Coal and Realty Company and the Consolidated Fuel Company. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Cumberland and President and Chairman of the Board of Frostburg National Bank until the merger with First National Bank of Maryland. He then served as a member of the Cumberland Advisory Board of the institution.

He was a member of the Frostburg United Methodist Church, the Maplehurst Country Club, the Cumberland Country Club, Masonic Lodge, Ali Ghan Temple, the Jesters, the American Legion, and he was formerly a Board Member of the Maryland Geological Survey.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be private at the funeral home with the Rev. LeRoy S. Capper officiating. Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.

Memorials are suggested to be made to the charity of one's choice.

WILLIAM H. LEE
SWANTON - William H. Lee, 70, of Altamont Tower Road, Swanton, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at the Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Aug. 4, 1927, in Wilson, he was the son of the late Jacob R. and Mae L. (Carter) Lee. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Betty L. (Boyce) Lee in 1952.

He was retired from the B & O Railroad as a trackman and was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way, and Lodge #11, W.O.W., Oakland.

He is survived by one sister, Ruby Shriner, Hagerstown; three brothers, Walter C. Lee, Sr., Robert R. Lee and David L. Lee, all of Swanton; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Lee officiating. Interment will be in the Georg cemetery.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Southern Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 378, Oakland, MD 21550; or to the Deer Park Community Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 3152, Deer Park, MD 21550.

NELLIE B. HILTON
CUMBERLAND - Nellie B. Hilton, 87, formally of 723 Shriver Ave., Cumberland, and a resident of the Allegany County Nursing Home, died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 26, 1911, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John E. Blonskey and the late Bertha (Bockhouse) Blonskey. She also was preceded in death by her husband, W. Eugene Hilton, on Nov. 25, 1990.

Mrs. Hilton was a retired school teacher with 42 years of service. She began her teaching career at Greenridge in a one-room schoolhouse. She later taught at Union Street, Flintstone, Fort Hill, and Washington Middle schools.

She was a graduate of Allegany High School, Class of 1928; Frostburg Normal School, 1930; Western Maryland College, 1941; and University of Maryland, 1953, and she attended Penn State.

She was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church; McKinley Chapter 12 OES; Garden Club of Cumberland; Retired Teachers Association; Delta Kappa Gamma; Women's Golf Club; and the Lutheran Women's W.E.L.C.A.

Following her retirement, Nellie and her husband Eugene were able to fulfill their dream of traveling extensively around the world to visit the many places about which she had taught thousands of Allegany County students during her teaching career.

Surviving are two sisters, Madelyn Knapp and Ruth Blonskey, both of Cumberland; a nephew, Barry Burns, Westminster; and two nieces, Madelyn Brehm and Judy Donahue, both of Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be in the St. Luke's cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Dave Ferguson, Stan Bowser, Leo Windemuth, Harry Yeager, George Brant and George Smith.

McKinley Chapter 12 OES will conduct memorial services on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
