STEWART A. LEPLEY
MADISON, Tenn. - Stewart Adam Lepley, 85, of Madison, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, in Madison from complications of an extended illness.
Born July 19, 1912, in Locust Grove, he was the son of the late L. Burton Lepley and Pleasant (Anderson) Lepley.
Mr. Lepley was a Metalsmith First Class with the U.S. Navy. He also served as a fireman, water tender, oiler and electrician with the Merchant Marines during World War II and the Vietnam War.
Surviving are two daughters, Diane Lepley-Baker and husband Chris, and granddaughter Amanda, of Madison, and Joyce Lepley Morris and granddaughter Deirdra and grandson Joshua, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two sisters, Annabelle Cessna, LaVale, and Mary Cook, Sykesville.
Private funeral services and interment were held on Monday, April 13, 1998, at Sunset Memorial Park in Cumberland.
The Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, Cumberland, was in charge of local arrangements.
EDITH C. LEWIS
CUMBERLAND - Edith Catherine (Gordon) Lewis, 85, of Cumberland, died Thursday, Jan. 8, 1998, at her residence.
Born April 23, 1912, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late August and Delilah (Beltz) Gordon. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis J. Lewis, in 1972; four sisters; and four brothers.
Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker.
Surviving are one daughter, Jessie Stansberry and husband Paul, Cumberland; one granddaughter, Janice Langford and husband Paul, Bel Air, Md.; and two great-grandchildren, Cindy Langford and Scott Curtis Langford.
At Mrs. Lewis' request, there will be no visitation.
Services will be conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ray McCoy officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
HERBERT L. KNEPP
CLARYSVILLE - Herbert L. Knepp, 84, of 16410 Clarysville Road, Frostburg, died Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at Lions Manor Nursing Home, Cumberland.
Born Oct. 23, 1913, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late Charles and Rella (Beeman) Knepp. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Knepp; and one granddaughter, Janet Frost.
Mr. Knepp retired after 41 years with the Celanese Fibers Corporation where he worked in the spinning department. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II serving in the South Pacific.
He was an active member of the Church of the Brethren, Frostburg.
He was a charter member of the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Department since 1942 and has held all the offices in the department and attended 50 consecutive Firemen's State Conventions. In 1975 he was Fireman of the Year for the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Department and was voted into the Allegany and Garrett County Fireman's Hall of Fame.
Mr. Knepp was an avid sportsman. He was past president of the Maryland Wildlife Association, and he was a member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club and the Haystack Rod and Gun Club.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #348, Frostburg, and the Old Rail Post #6025 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mount Savage.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Lydia (Wigfield) Knepp; one daughter, Barbara Gwaltney, New Bern, N.C.; one son, Wayne H. Knepp, Hollywood; two grandchildren, Donald Frost, Frederick and Judy Frost, New Bern; and one great-granddaughter.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8 p.m. by the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Department.
The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Rick Riley and the Rev. T. William Preston officiating.
Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park.
Memorials should be directed to the Church of the Brethren, Frostburg, or to the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Department.
J. FRANCIS FATKIN
CLARYSVILLE - J. Francis Fatkin, 79, a resident of the Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Clarysville, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Nov. 7, 1918, in Loartown, he was the son of the late John "Mac" and Mary (Blubaugh) Fatkin. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Delores (Sires) Fatkin, in 1994; and a brother, Kenneth Fatkin.
Mr. Fatkin was retired as Clerk of the Allegany County Circuit Court. He was a member of Vale Summit United Methodist Church; member of Mountain Lodge 99 AF & AM; life member, past president and chaplain of the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Co.; past president of Allegany and Garrett Counties Volunteer Firemen and Rescue Association; state trustee of the Maryland State Firemens Association; and past president, secretary and treasurer of the Frostburg Lions Club.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific under General MacArthur.
Surviving are a son, David Fatkin and wife Kathy, Carrollton, Texas; three grandchildren, Eric Fatkin and wife Cindy, Van Couver, Wash., Todd Fatkin, Denver, Colo., and Justin Fatkin, Carrollton; two great-granddaughters, Devin and Connor Fatkin; and two sisters, Anna Hitchins, Vale Summit, and Shirley Hoadley, Bel Air.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 7:30 p.m. by the Clarysville Volunteer Fire Co., Allegany and Garrett Counties Firemen and Rescue Association, and Maryland State Firemans Association.

MARGUERITE M. HINDS
CRESAPTOWN - Marguerite M. Hinds, 84, formerly of Cresaptown, died Friday, July 7, 1998, at Fairfax Hospital (Va.)
Born Dec. 13, 1913, in Cresaptown, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Zella (Winter) McKenzie. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Franklin Hinds.
Mrs. Hinds was a Homemaker. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown, and the St. Ambrose Ladies Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Patricia Johnsen, and husband, Richard, with whom she resided, Annandale, Va.; a son, John B. Hinds, and wife, Maryann, Alexandria, Va.; one grandson, Erik Johnsen, and wife, Diane, Arlington, Va.; and one granddaughter, Ashley Hinds, Alexandria.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Reginald Russo O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
LAURA V. KELLY
BLOOMINGTON - Laura V. Kelly, 97, formerly of Bloomington, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Oct. 6, 1900, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of the late William Tibbetts and Minnie (Penrod) Tibbetts. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Kelly, in 1953; two brothers; and two sisters. She was the last of her immediate family.
Mrs. Kelly was Protestant by faith. She was a member of Bethlehem Chapter 14 Order of the Eastern Star, and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bloomington Fire Department. She was the owner of Kelly Store at Deep Creek Lake for many years.
Surviving are a stepdaughter, Rose Ann Jones, Newark, Del.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Bloomington Methodist Church on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the church on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Don Nelson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Bloomington cemetery. Members of the Bloomington Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.
Memorials may be directed to the Bloomington Fire Department.
