NELLIE V. JOHNSON
OAKLAND - Nellie Virginia Johnson, 92, of Oakland, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Cuppett & Weeks Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born Sept. 7, 1906, at Red Oak, she was a daughter of the late Silas Arnold and Chetta (Rumer) Arnold. She also was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Johnson, in 1944.
Mrs. Johnson was a retired cook having worked at Faulkner's Restaurant in Oakland. She was a member of the Meadow Glade Homemakers Club.
Surviving are one son, William H. Johnson Jr., Michigan City, Ind.; three daughters, Isabel Sisler, Oakland, Rosolene Towry, Carlsbad, N.M., and Helen Layman, St. George, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David Moon officiating.
Interment will be in the Fairview cemetery.
THELMA M. LAYMAN
SHAFT - Thelma M. Layman, 84, formerly of 12006 Upper Georges Creek Road, Frostburg, died Monday, March 16, 1998, at the St. Vincent de Paul Nursing Center, Frostburg.
Born Oct. 14, 1913, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late William and Amelia May (Alexander) Lyons. She also was preceded in death by one brother, William Lyons, and was the last of her immediate family.
Ms. Lyons was a homemaker. She was a member of the Shaft United Methodist Church, the Farrady Unit #24 American Legion Auxiliary, and the Shaft Homemakers Club.
Surviving are one daughter, Barbara Stine and husband, Brent, Columbia; one son, John William Layman and wife, Allison, Towson; three grandsons, Mark Stine and wife, JoAnne, Columbia, Christopher Layman and Andrew Layman, both of Towson; two great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Briana Stine; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Farrady Unit #24 American Legion Auxiliary will hold a memorial service at the funeral home on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Shaft United Methodist Church, 19304 Shaft Road S.W., on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence R. Frye officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the services.
Interment will be in the Frostburg Memorial Park.
LYDIA C. FAZENBAKER
KEYSER, W.Va. - Lydia C. Fazenbaker, 105, formerly of Beryl, and formerly of Pennylane Court, Keyser, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, at the Heartland of Keyser Nursing Home.
Born in Paw Paw on Feb. 3, 1893, she was the daughter of the late William N. Burke and Dorcas (Lyon) Burke. Mrs. Fazenbaker was also preceded in death by her husband, James W. Fazenbaker, in 1980.
Mrs. Fazenbaker was a homemaker and a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont. She was also active at the former Presbyterian Church in Beryl.
Surviving are two daughters, Ada Hanna, Keyser, and Roberta Beard, Bloomington, Md.; three grandchildren, Rebecca Niland, and husband, Michael, McCoole, Md., Tally Hanna, and wife, Kathy, Fort Ashby, and Melanie Martin, and husband, James, Frostburg, Md.; four great-grandchildren, Lynette Niland, Pittsburgh, Pa., Ryan Niland, Hagerstown, Md.; Greg Hanna, and wife, Lisa, Fort Ashby, and Angela Suesse, and husband, Robert, Cumberland; one great-great-grandchild, Katelynn Marie Suesse, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett officiating.
Interment will be in Philos cemetery, Westernport.
SIMEON H. HUTCHESON JR.
LONACONING - Simeon "Sam" Howard Hutcheson Jr., 80, of 35 Furnace St., Lonaconing, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Jan. 20, 1918, at Lonaconing, he was a son of the late Simeon Howard and Clara (Hausman) Hutcheson Sr. He also was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Hutcheson; two brothers, William H. Hutcheson and Montgomery Hutcheson; and one granddaughter, Leslie Ann Hutcheson.
Mr. Hutcheson was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and retired as the self-employed owner and operator of Hutcheson's Grocery, Lonaconing. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Lonaconing; Lonaconing Lions Club; Good Will Fire Company 1; United Commercial Travelers; Christian Businessmen Association; and Cumberland and Georges Creek senior citizens.
Surviving are his wife, Harriett (Wattenschaidt) Hutcheson; two sons, Howard Hutcheson and wife Ruth Lee, St. Louis, Mo., and Alan Hutcheson and wife Amy, Lonaconing; one grandson, Tyler Hutcheson; two granddaughters, Autumn Hutcheson and Lacey Hutcheson; and one brother, Robert Hutcheson, Huntsville, Ala.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, Lonaconing, Friday, Oct. 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Good Will Fire Company 1 will hold a memorial service at the funeral home Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
ARTHUR A. HITE
CUMBERLAND - Arthur Austin Hite, 80, of Cumberland, died Friday at the Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 18, 1918, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Franklin A. and Sara E. (Valentine) Hite.
Mr. Hite was Methodist by faith.
Surviving is his sister, Nellie Elizabeth Hite, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
A graveside service will be held at the Greenmount cemetery on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Adam E. Grim officiating.
LEONARD GILLESPIE
CUMBERLAND - Leonard Nelson Gillespie, 95, formerly of Golden Lane, Cumberland, and a patient at the Allegany County Nursing Home for five years, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at the nursing home.
He was born May 12, 1902, in Palmer, W.Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia (Washbaugh) Gillespie.
Mr. Gillespie was a self-employed carpenter, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He was Assembly of God by faith.
Among his survivors are two nephews, Crable Santymire, Wiley Ford, and Ernest Santymire, LaVale; one sister-in-law, Helen Pyecha, Baltimore.
There will be no visitation.
Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at 2 p.m. at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland, with the Rev. Harold T. Shaffer officiating.
Interment will be in Greenmount cemetery, Cumberland.
KATHRYN HOUSE
FRIENDSVILLE - Kathryn "Kate" House, 63, of 1610 Bear Creek Road, Friendsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Feb. 15, 1935, in Pigeon, W.Va., she was a daughter of Freda (Abshur) O'Dell Brown, of Spencer, W.Va., and the late Isaac Reese O'Dell. She also was preceded in death by a son, Leroy; and a sister, Frances Emogene.
Surviving in addition to her mother are her husband of 41 years, Sherman J. "Sonny" House, whom she married
on March 27, 1956, in Oakland; five sons, Paul House and Joseph House, both of Accident, Kenneth House, Gray County, S.C., David House, Left Hand, W.Va., and Peter House, Friendsville; a daughter, Wanda Schmidt, Accident; an adopted son, Sean Lane, Friendsville; four brothers, David O'Dell, Wanatah, Ind., Donald O'Dell, Michigan City, Ind., Lewis and John O'Dell, Amma, W.Va.; three sisters, Carole Easton and Sue Jury, both of Parkersburg, W.Va., and Dolly McGlothlin, Canton, Ohio; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Philip Smith officiating.
Interment will be in Glade cemetery, Accident.
