SYLVIA M. HUFF
CUMBERLAND - Sylvia Marie Huff, 79, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 16, 1919, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late William L. and Laurabelle (Martin) Valentine. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Huff; one son, Donald P. Huff; one brother, Ernest Valentine; and two sisters, Madeline Derks and Dorothy Iser.

Mrs. Huff was an employee at the Cumberland Times-News, and she was a former employee of the Celanese Corporation and had been employed by the City of Cumberland Police Force as a school crossing guard.

Surviving are one son, Robert Lewis Huff Jr. and wife, Faye Ann, Cumberland; two brothers, Carl G. Valentine and wife, Joan, Little Orleans, and Leroy L. Valentine, Cumberland; one sister-in-law, Shirley Valentine, Cumberland; two grandchildren, Margaret Ann Headley, Cumberland, Robert L. Huff III and wife, Arlean, Cumberland; and three great-grandchildren, Rebecca, Tyler and Nathan.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Madeline E. Cook officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.

ETHEL M. "MISS ETHEL" FLECKENSTEIN
CUMBERLAND - Ethel M. "Miss Ethel" Fleckenstein, 91, lived her last day on June 11, 1998. She was currently a resident of Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born Nov. 15, 1906, she was the daughter of the late Neal B. and Elsie M. (Richards) Nixon. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Frank R. Fleckenstein; and one brother, Paul E. Nixon.

She was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and sang in the choir as well.

"Miss Ethel" loved song, strawberries, sunflowers, and beautiful clothes. She enjoyed the natural beauty of Western Maryland, especially the C&O; Canal area and the Potomac and Cacapon river valleys. In her younger years she was an expert marksperson and an avid fan of Zane Grey novels.

Surviving are her son, Frank Fleckenstein, and his fiance, Kathy Wiley, who was her special friend; five grandchildren, Cynthia Rosenberger, Robert Fleckenstein, and wife, Bonita, Cumberland, Deborah Fleckenstein, Sharon Kessler, and her special friend, Craig Ware, Mount Savage, and Joyce Fleckenstein, Pittsburgh; six great-grandchildren, Crystal Rosenberger, and her special friend, Eric Brewington, Melissa, Eric and Michael Rosenberger, Cumberland, Timothy Kenny, Mount Savage, and Lauren Kessler, Frederick; two great-great-grandchildren, Ashlie and Avery Rhodes, Cumberland; three special cousins, Glen and Neal Nixon, and Mary Kidd.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., corner of Greene and Smallwood streets, Cumberland, on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:45 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Vance Pastorius, OFM, Cap, as celebrant.

Pallbearers will be Robert Fleckenstein, Timothy Kenny, Eric J. Brewington, Craig Ware, Crystal and Melissa Rosenberger.

Honorary pallbearers are Richard E. Young and Michael Rosenberger.

Interment will be in SS. Peter & Paul cemetery.

It is requested that memorials be directed to SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church for the support of their choir and music programs, 125 Fayette St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

GLADYS L. GROVE
CUMBERLAND - Gladys LaRue Grove, 85, of Cumberland, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at her residence.
Born Jan. 27, 1913, in Luke, she was the daughter of the late J. Warren and Laura (Streets) LaRue. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Donald K. Grove, a local surgeon, who died in 1983; two sisters, Eleanor and Maude; and two brothers, Byron and Allen. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. Grove was a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital. She was supervisor of nurses at Memorial Hospital for eight years and taught school in the school of nursing for one year. She received her education from Bruce High School, Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, the University of Virginia, and Catherman's Business School. She was a member of Memorial Hospital Nurses Association and the Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; Cumberland Country Club; Women's Civic Club; Allegany County Historical Society; and the Women's Golf Association of the Cumberland Country Club.

At Mrs. Grove's request, her body was cremated.

A memorial service was conducted at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A. 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating.

ALBERT C. FLEEGLE
OAKLAND - Albert Cecil Fleegle, 83, formerly of Corriganville, died Friday, July 24, 1998, at Garrett Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
He was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Cumberland, a son of the late Alonzo and Estella (Fuller) Fleegle.

Mr. Fleegle was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by four nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Llewelyn "Lou" Fleegle, killed in action during World War II; and a sister, Frances (Fleegle) Huff, in 1973.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted in the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m.

Interment will be in Hillcrest cemetery.

M. BERNADINE GROVE
CUMBERLAND - M. Bernadine (Boyle) Grove, 73, of McMullen Highway, Cumberland, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Berlin General Hospital, Berlin.
Born Dec. 31, 1924, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Stephen S. and Anna Bernadine (Graham) Boyle. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Joan Logsdon and Eileen Bridges.

Mrs. Grove was retired from the Garrett and Allegany county school systems as a special education teacher. She was a graduate of Catholic Girls Central High School, Cumberland, and Frostburg State Teachers College. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Cresaptown; the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians; AARP; and the Maryland State Teachers Association.

Mrs. Grove and her husband, Harry W. Grove Sr., would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September.

Surviving in addition to her husband are one daughter, Sharon Gero and husband Dick, Bel Air, Cumberland; one son, Harry W. Grove Jr. and wife Patty, Cumberland; four sisters, Colleen Morgan, Mount Savage, Elaine Flynn and husband George, Cumberland, Robertine Murray and husband Jim, BelAir, Cumberland, and Maureen Lennox and husband Bob, Mount Savage; one brother, Patrick Stephen Boyle and wife Catherine, Mount Savage; two brothers-in-law, Pat Logsdon, Mount Savage, and Homer Bridges, LaVale; four grandchildren, Lisa Mandell and husband Adam, Westminster, Lori Hensell and husband Chris, Plainfield, Conn., Justin Grove and Joshua Grove, both of Cumberland; and one great-granddaughter, Mollie Mandell, Westminster.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., Cresaptown, Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ambrose Catholic Church Thursday at 11 a.m. with Father Reginald Russo officiating. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Special Education Department of the Allegany County Board of Education in memory of Mrs. Grove.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Wolfe, Steven Witt, John McClellan, Dan Hoyle, George Shaffer and Stephen Shaffer.

JULIUS H. LENKEY
FROSTBURG - Julius Hugo Lenkey, 88, of 340 Barnard St., Frostburg, formerly of New Brunswick, N.J., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Nov. 24, 1909, in Newark, N.J., he was the son of the late Paul and Vilma (Bors) Lenkey.

Mr. Lenkey was retired from Raritan Arsenal, New Brunswick. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the infantry in Guam, Philippines and Western Pacific operations. He was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant and received the Bronze Star.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church; Knights of Columbus Council 1442; and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 470, all of Frostburg.

Hugo is survived by his wife of 52 years, Ellen (LaManna) Lenkey, affectionately known as "Dear," having proudly displayed so on their license plate. Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Emma (Ruffo) LaManna, Frostburg; and numerous nieces and nephews in the New Jersey and local areas.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 9 to 10:45 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Michael's Catholic Church at 11 a.m. with the Rev. William Moody as celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

The family requests that memorials be directed to St. Michael's School.
