EDITH A. HEBB
CUMBERLAND - Edith Ann (McNabb) Hebb, 70, of Potomac Park, Cumberland, died Friday, May 29, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 27, 1928, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Mary A. (O'Rourke) Harbaugh. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Hebb; one daughter, Elaine (Hebb) Tyree; one brother, William Harbaugh; and one sister, Rose M. Kahoe.

Mrs. Hebb was a clerk in the callers office of the B&O; Railroad. She was a 1946 graduate of Catholic Girl Central and a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Dale A. Hebb and wife Jill, White Post, Va., and Stephen McNabb and wife Rosemary, Cumberland; four daughters, Sharon K. Menges and husband Tom, Grantsville, Mary Louise McNabb, LaVale, Cindy Humbertson and husband William, Canton, Ohio, and Dawn G. Hebb, Cumberland; two sisters, Dorothy Friedman and husband Richard, and Eulalia Harbaugh, all of Baltimore; one brother, Thomas E. Harbaugh and wife Betty, Keyser, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Michael W. Menges and wife Lori, Sean M. Crabtree, Eric S. Crabtree, Melissa A. McNabb, Stephen G. McNabb, Thomas C. Menges, Wayne W. Menges and Tracy A. Hill; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, Sunday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home Sunday at 8 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Monday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.

At Mrs. Hebb's request, her body will be cremated and the cremains interred at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

EUGENE PAUL "GENE" HEDRICK
CUMBERLAND - Eugene Paul "Gene" Hedrick, 67, of Wempe Drive, Cumberland, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.
Born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Grafton, W.Va., he was the son of the late George Henry and Mae Elizabeth (Matthews) Hedrick. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Earl H. Hedrick, Russell W. Hedrick, Raymond H. Hedrick; and a sister, Marie E. Simmons.

Mr. Hedrick was employed by Twigg Realty, and he was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Surviving are four daughters, Ladonna J. Wills, Cresaptown, Holly Lynn Hedrick, Cumberland, Pamela Kay Hedrick-Stone, Baltimore, and Ginger L. Hedrick-Spangler, New York; five sisters, Viola M. Jewell, a resident of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, Irene M. Miller, Grantsville, Ellen M. Rosier and husband, Troy, Moorefield, W.Va., Kathleen M. Alburtis and husband, Donald, Eckhart, and Ida L. Carpenter, California; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Hwy., LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Edward R. Dickel officiating.

At Mr. Hedrick's request his body will be cremated.

In lieu of cut flowers, Mr. Hedrick requested floral arrangements take the form of plants or potted flowers to honor his lasting memory, or contributions to Toys for Happiness, P.O. Box 702, Cumberland, MD 21502.

LAWRENCE HEFFINGTON
ATHENS, Texas - Services for Lawrence E. Heffington, 42, were held at the First United Methodist Church of Athens with the Rev. Lawrence Culbertson officiating.
Burial was in The Athens City cemetery.

Mr. Heffington died Sept. 30, 1998, at his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Beth Buchanan Heffington, Athens; daughters, Victoria Marie Heffington and Lisa Ann Heffington, both of Athens; mother, Ruth Ann Heffington, Morganfield, Ky.; brother Gene Heffington, LaGrange, Ky.; two nieces and one nephew. Beth Buchanan Heffington is the daughter of Rosalyn and Howard Buchanan, Cumberland.

Lawrence "Larry" Heffington was born May 3, 1956, in Morganfield to Fred and Ruth Ann (Cowan) Heffington.

He received his bachelor's degree from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky., and then taught high school and coached baseball in Union, Ky. He later moved to Houston where he taught at Lamar High School and coached girls' basketball. At the same time, he attended South Texas College of Law at night and was awarded his doctorate of jurisprudence in 1988. He was appointed to fill out the unexpired term of assistant county attorney in 1990. In 1992 he was elected to county attorney, which he maintained until his death.

Mr. Heffington was president of the administrative board of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Athens Rotary Club, State Bar of Texas and president of the Henderson County Bar Association. He also served on the Henderson County Juvenile Board. His office was active in the McGruff Program, and, along with MADD, supplied posters and bookcovers for Henderson County school children. He also served on the board of directors of Henderson County Girls Softball Association and coached girls softball for six years, taking a team to the state playoffs in 1996. He also coached girls YMCA basketball. He was to be honorary chairman of the 1998 Cattle Baron's Ball for the Henderson County unit of the American Cancer Society. His widow, Beth, will be presented with an original watercolor painting of the Henderson County Courthouse. She is donating the picture to the Courthouse in memory of her husband.

If desired, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Henderson County Unit, 703 Mulberry, Athens, TX 75751.

ETHEL PEARL LEASE
WESTERNPORT - Ethel Pearl Lease, 90, of 21418 Creek Side Drive, Westernport, and lately a resident of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 9, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born on July 4, 1907, at Piedmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late John W. and Viola P. (Smiley) Paton. She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Lease, in 1967; one sister; one brother; one son; two daughters; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Mrs. Lease was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel Holiness Church, Lonaconing, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a longtime member of the Women's Ministries of the church. She was a very gentle and loving mother, grandmother and aunt, and she will be sadly missed by all.

She is survived by one son, John T. "Jack" Lease, and wife, Frannie, of Cumberland; one daughter, Judy A. Ewell, and husband, Bert, of Warner Robins, Ga.; two brothers, James Patton, and wife, Frances, Rawlings, Hugh Paton, and wife, Mary, Westernport; two sisters, Ameda Combs, Keyser, W.Va., and Betty Simpson, and husband, Walter, Rawlings; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Sunday, May 10, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Bethel Holiness Church, in Lonaconing, on Monday, May 11, at 11 a.m., by the Rev. George R. Loar.

Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery, Moscow Mills.

Grandsons and nephews will be pallbearers.

BRENDA JOYCE HELBIG
OAKLAND - Brenda Joyce Helbig, age 26, of Oakland, died on Monday, June 22, 1998, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
She was born in Oakland, Oct. 10, 1971, and was a daughter of John T. Shahan Sr. and JoAnn (Durr) Shahan of Mountain Lake Park. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Arlie R. and Viola (Calhoun) Shahan.

In addition to her parents she is survived by her husband William Michael Helbig Jr.; two sons, Kevin M. Helbig and Donald C. Helbig, both at home; one step-daughter, Dana Helbig, Terra Alta, W.Va.; four brothers, John T. Shahan Jr., and his wife, Rebecca, and Michael P. Shahan, all of Oakland, James T. Shahan, and his wife, Ann, Deer Park, Tracy A. Shahan, and his wife, Becky, of Hutton; one sister, Sharon L. Jenkins, and her husband, Doug, Oakland; one sister-in-law, Teresa Helbig; numerous nieces and nephews; and her maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Paugh, Mountain Lake Park.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Ward, the Rev. Ray Teets, the Rev. Don Matthews, and Major George Price officiating.

Interment will be in the Deer Park cemetery.

The family request that memorials be directed to the Garrett County Memorial Hospital Foundation "Gifts from the Heart."

KATHRYN S. HELBIG
DEEP CREEK LAKE - Kathryn S. Helbig, 91, of Deep Creek Lake, formerly of Oakland, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at her home.
Born March 21, 1906, in Jefferson, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late John H. Stevenson and Vava (Head) Stevenson.

Mrs. Helbig taught French at the Oakland High School and later worked as a social worker for the State of Maryland until her retirement. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church; charter member of BPW; member of the Youghiogheny Glades Chapter DAR; and member of the University of Maryland Alumni Association.

Surviving are one daughter, Vava Railey and husband Robert, Deep Creek Lake; three granddaughters, Kathy L. Gibson, Deep Creek Lake, Deborah A. Recker, Bethel Park, Pa,. and Roberta J. Hurley, Gapland, Md.; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy S. Stahl, Falls Church, Va.; and two brothers, Thomas W. Stevenson, Chambersburg, Pa., and Robert H. Stevenson, Damascus, Md.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Manning Smith officiating.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department; the Ruth Enlow Library; the House of Hope; or the Alzheimer's Association.
