She and her husband started the Hershberger Insurance Agency in Grantsville in 1940, and the agency is currently operated by Margaret Hershberger Wagner.

She has been a resident of Grantsville since 1933, when she came to town as the young bride of Daniel W. Hershberger. She was born Ruth Marie Maxwell, the daughter of the late Andrew and Jenny (Bennett) Maxwell of Vernon, N.Y. She came into this world on Aug. 8, 1904, weighing only two pounds and often told family members that it only took a few sticks of wood in the family cook stove to keep her warm. She retained her wit and charm right up to the end.

Additionally, she is survived by her four devoted granddaughters Ellen Houseley, Ann McLister, Lynne Halladay and Leslie Braddock as well as nine great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Mae Raymond and Orvilla Davis, and her brother George Maxwell, all of Vernon, N.Y., also survive her.

Ruth was the subject of a special feature in an article in The Republican on Oct. 13, 1994, and the Cumberland Times-News Garrett County Weekender on Oct. 21, 1994, both honoring her as an active licensed insurance agent at the age of 90. She was a charter member of the American Legion and Firemen's Auxiliaries, St. John's Women's Guild, and was the oldest member of the United Church of Christ in Grantsville.

In accordance with Ruth's wishes, her body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at the United Church of Christ in Grantsville on Sunday, July 5, at 2:30 p.m. Her ashes will be interred in the Grantsville cemetery next to the body of her late husband.
