JOHN A. NIES JR.
CUMBERLAND - John Andrew Nies Jr., 74, of 816 Trost Ave., Cumberland, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 20, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late John Andrew Nies Sr. and the late Veronica (Miller) Nies.

Mr. Nies was a retired pipe fitter for PPG Industries. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Fort Cumberland Post 13 American Legion, September Singers, and the A.A.R.P. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Martha R. (Steiner) Nies, Cumberland; a son, Mark E. Nies and wife, Susan, LaVale; a daughter, Sharon Nies, Melborne, Fla.; two sisters, Theresa Jenkins, Cumberland, and Henrietta Delmonico, Cranston, R.I.; and five grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., with the Rev. Fr. Thomas R. Bevan officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military honors will be accorded at graveside by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

JOHN F. NILAND
CUMBERLAND - John F. Niland, 82, formerly of Fayette Street, Cumberland, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at Memorial Hospital. He had been a patient at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Niland was born on June 7, 1915, in Cumberland and was the son of the late William J. Niland and Neva May (Growden) Niland. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea (Wickard) Niland, who died on May 2, 1995; and two brothers.

Mr. Niland retired on June 15, 1967, from the Reading Railroad Company as the Assistant Superintendent for the Philadelphia (Pa.) Division.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Henry Hart Post #1411 Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by one brother, Francis W. "Frank" Niland, Shallotte, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Prayer services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Vance Pastorius as celebrant. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

Military graveside services will be accorded by several combined veterans organizations.

MARGARET E. NIXON
CUMBERLAND - Margaret Elizabeth (See) Nixon, 73, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 14, 1925, in Wiley Ford, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edgar W. and Beatrice (Abe) See.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Earl See.

Mrs. Nixon had worked at the Crystal Laundry.

Survivors include her husband, Franklin James Nixon; one son, James Edgar Nixon and wife, Mary Theresa, Oldtown; two daughters, Evelyn Sue Smith and husband, Joseph, Oldtown, and Rebecca Lee Snyder and husband, George, Boonsboro; six grandchildren, Victoria Nixon, Oxford, Ohio, Debra Nixon, Oldtown, Tonya Jeannine Freeman and Timothy Jason Snyder, both of Hagerstown, and Franklin Smith and Joseph Smith, both of Oldtown; and one great-granddaughter, Abigail Lee Freeman.

Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at 1 p.m. with Pastor George Snyder officiating.

Interment will be in Davis Memorial cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Timothy Snyder, Gregory Freeman, Franklin Smith, Joseph Smith, Junior Wilson and Robert McBride.

Memorial contributions may be made to either the Knoxville Bible Church, 208 Knoxville Road, Knoxville, MD 21758, or to the Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, Oldtown, MD 21555.

VIRGINIA R. NORMAN
BEL AIR, Cumberland - Virginia Ruth Norman, 82, formerly of Bel Air Drive, Bel Air, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
She was born Jan. 6, 1916, in Shaw, W.Va.

Miss Norman was the daughter of the late Alonzo McKenzie and Jennie (Roberts) McKenzie.

She was a former employee of the Wilson & Pugh Hardware Store and was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Cumberland.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Elsie Twigg, Cumberland; two nephews; and one niece.

Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Leasure-Stein Funeral Home, 230 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland.

Funeral service arrangements are incomplete at this time.

VIRGINIA R. NORMAN
BEL AIR, Cumberland - Virginia Ruth Norman, age 82, formerly of Bel Air Drive, Bel Air, died Monday, Oct. 19, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born Jan. 6, 1916, in Shaw, W.Va., Miss Norman was the daughter of the late Alonzo M. Norman and Jennie (Roberts) Norman.

MARY M. NORRIS
CUMBERLAND - Mary Melissa Norris, 94, of the John F. Kennedy Apartments, Cumberland, died Sunday, May 17, 1998, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born April 25, 1904, in Paw Paw, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Gable Floyd Davis and the late Lucy (Larkin) Davis. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry H. Norris, in 1971.

Mrs. Norris was a member of the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Surviving are two sons, Charles David Norris, Hagerstown, and Dennis P. Norris and wife E. Elaine, Tallmadge, Ohio; seven grandsons, Charles, John, Gregory, Mark, Brian, Jason and Jesse; and a great-granddaughter, Cheyanne Norris.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Wednesday at 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the Rosehill cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

WILLIAM A. NORRIS JR.
CUMBERLAND - William A. Norris Jr., 45, of Hinkle Road, Cumberland, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 1998, at his residence.
Born Oct. 9, 1952, in Cumberland, he was the son of William A. Norris Sr. and Colleen (Emerson) Norris, Cumberland.

Mr. Norris was a 1970 graduate of Fort Hill High School and a 1973 Forestry Program graduate of Allegany Community College. He was a Juvenile Counselor Senior Intake Officer for the Department of Juvenile Justice System for the State of Maryland for 24 years. He owned and operated one of two Bicentennial Farms in Allegany County. He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Administrative Board for the Church. He was a member of Tri-State Bluegrass Association and was 1997 Soil Conservation Farmer of the Year for Allegany County.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Sue L. (Robey) Norris; two daughters, Amy L. Norris, Cumberland, and Alicia Susanne Norris, at home; two sisters, Linda Kirtley and husband Gary, Roanoke, Va., and Carol Ann Kiiffner and husband George, Cumberland; one brother, Gary Michael Norris and wife Leigh Ann, Cumberland; two sisters-in-law, Linda Carpenter and husband Gary, Corriganville, and Carol Knox, Cumberland; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Ken L. Korns and Pastor Tom Landaker officiating.

Interment will be in the Mount Pleasant cemetery, Cumberland.

Pallbearers will be Tony Wertz, Bill Scott, Kurt Lough, Earl Eaton, Roger Everly and Sam Harman. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Mallow, Leonard VanMeter, Jeff Graham, Bobby Wilson, Scott Carpenter, Bernard Wentling and Eric Beal.
