CONSTANCE "CONNIE" "OODIE" RICHEY
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Constance "Connie" "Oodie" Richey, 75, of Washington, formerly of Cumberland, died Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Greater Southeast Community Hospital, Washington.
Surviving are her husband, William Milton Richey, Washington; three sisters, Roberta Thompson, Somerset, Pa., Irene Keys, Cumberland, Lorraine Sailes, Omaha, Neb.; three brothers-in-law, George Thompson, Nial Keys and William Sailes; two sisters-in-law, Marie Richardson and Eleise Hawkins; and other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at St. Monica's Episcopal Church, 1340 Massachusetts Ave. S.E., Washington, on Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m., at which time the funeral service will be conducted.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St. Monica's Episcopal Church Memorial Fund in memory of Connie Richey.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hall Brothers Funeral Home, Washington.

JOHN H. SOMMERKAMP
BELTSVILLE - John Humbird Sommerkamp, 98, of Beltsville, formerly of Cumberland, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, at the St. Mary's Nursing Center, Leonardtown.
Born Sept. 1, 1900, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Edward Rudolph and Rosa (Colbert) Sommerkamp. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marion (Padgett) Sommerkamp, in 1982; two brothers, Charles and George Sommerkamp; and one great-grandson.

After marrying Anna in 1925, they lived in Cumberland until 1978, when they moved to Beltsville to the home of Charles and Teresa Sommerkamp and their children.

Mr. Sommerkamp was a sheet metal worker and pipefitter. He worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the Celanese Corporation of America. Mr. Sommerkamp was also an accomplished paperhanger, which he enjoyed doing in his younger years.

He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. When he was six years old he joined the Bethany United Brethren Church, which later merged with the Methodist Church. He was very proud to have been a member of the same congregation since its inception. At the time of his death, he was the last of the members who started worshiping in the Hammersmith building.

Surviving are one daughter, Oneita Dohrman, California, Md.; one son, Charles H. Sommerkamp and wife, Teresa, with whom he resided; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at Christ United Methodist Church, Race Street, Cumberland, on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner and Pastor Max Greenfield officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

LILLIAN SPALDING
WILLIAMSPORT - Lillian S. Hendershot Spalding, 85, of 16812 Tammany Manor Drive, Williamsport, died on Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at the Homewood Nursing Home in Williamsport.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Hendershot, in 1951, and by her second husband, William Norman Spalding Sr., on Dec. 7, 1994.

Born Feb. 28, 1913, in Greenridge, she was the daughter of the late David and Harriett Twigg Snyder.

She was retired after many years of service as a cook at Homewood Retirement Center.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by three daughters, Joann Fields and Bobbie Buskirk, both of Greencastle, Pa., and Lois Fisher Myers, Hagerstown; one son, David Hendershot, Marlowe, W.Va.; one step-son, William Spalding Jr., San Diego, Calif.; one sister, Gladys Roy, Cumberland; one brother, Stanley Snyder, Little Orleans; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Effie Hebb, and Dorothy Kesler; and six brothers, James Snyder, Albert Snyder, Eugene Snyder, John Snyder, David Snyder and Leonard Snyder.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble will officiate. Burial will be in Madley cemetery, Madley, Pa.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

MICHAEL SPATARO SR.
NATIONAL - Michael A. Spataro Sr., 76, of National, died Friday, July 3, 1998, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born June 10, 1922, in Morantown, he was the son of the late Louis and Rachel (Parillo) Spataro. He also was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Mr. Spataro was a bricklayer, retired from National Masonry Company Inc. in 1984. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret (Kaefer) Spataro; one son, Michael C. Spataro, and wife, Ann, National; one daughter, Patricia Spataro Frantz, and husband, William, National; two grandchildren, Hollie Frantz, and Lance Spataro; two brothers, Tillio "Ted" Spataro, Eckhart, and Albert Spataro, and wife, Ina Lee, Morantown; and a number of special nieces and nephews. He was a grandfather to many.

Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, P.A., 60 W. Main St., Frostburg, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Father William Moody officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be "Buddy" Spataro, John Spataro, Ronnie Spataro, Robert Crawford, Charles Kaefer and John Stark.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church.

HUGH "DUCKY" SPEIR JR.
FROSTBURG - Hugh "Ducky" Speir Jr., 83, of Powells Lane, Frostburg, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at his residence.
Born April 27, 1915, in Carlos, he was the son of the late Hugh and Bella (Stevenson) Speir Sr. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Allen Speir and James "Butch" Speir.

Mr. Speir was a retired truck driver from the County Roads Division and formerly worked at the Celanese Fibers Corporation in the Dye House. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Speir was a member of Farrady Post #24 American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #1273, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #348, and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #40.

Surviving are one son, William J. Speir and wife, Goldie, Carlos; one brother, George Speir, Carlos; two sisters, Isabella Skidmore, Midlothian, and Erma Albright and husband, Melvin, Hagerstown; four grandchildren, Richard Speir and wife, Marilyn, Odenton, Rhonda Winebrenner and husband, Doug, Frostburg, Rebecca Bobo and husband, Kevin, Bel Air, and Robyn Speir, Carlos; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The F.O.E. Lodge #1273 will conduct a memorial service at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. George R. Loar officiating.

Interment will be in the Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland. Farrady Unit #24 Honor Guard will bestow Military Honors at graveside.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Durst, Doug Winebrenner, Kevin Bobo, Nathan Wilson, Pinky Fiorita and Phil Brode.

JOAN E. SPICHER
CUMBERLAND - Joan E. Spicher, 74, of Cumberland, died Friday, June 26, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born April 9, 1924, in Hopwood, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Earl Ford and Lena Cecelia (Baumnam) Spicher. She also was preceded in death by one brother, Raymond M. Spicher; and one sister, Hazel J. Spicher.

Miss Spicher was a secretary for Goldsmit-Black, Cumberland. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Surviving are one brother, Vincent M. Spicher and wife Ann, Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be conducted at Blooming Rose cemetery, Friendsville, Monday at 11 a.m. with Father Milton A. Hipsley officiating.

The Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.

ALENA MAE "LENA" (CUTTER) SPIKER
CRESAPTOWN - Alena Mae "Lena" (Cutter) Spiker, 75, of Frostburg Village Nursing Home, formerly of Lonaconing, died Monday, April 6, 1998, at the nursing home.
Born March 18, 1923, in Lonaconing, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Hannah (Russell) Cutter. Mrs. Spiker was preceded in death by her husband, Edward G. Spiker; and one son, Charles Edward "Eddie" Spiker.

She was a member of the Cresaptown Eagles #2883, the Lonaconing Republican Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of James P. Love Post #92 American Legion and the Senior Citizens of Georges Creek. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are one son, Jack Harold Spiker, Cresaptown; one brother, Allen Cutter, Lonaconing; and one sister, Thelma Davis, Midland; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Wednesday, April 8, 1998, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, April 9, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Mortimore officiating.

Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery, Moscow Mills.
