ELLIS J. SPIKER
FROSTBURG - Ellis Joseph Spiker, 79, formerly of Frostburg, died March 8, 1998, at Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport.
Born Feb. 5, 1919, he was the son of the late Ellis J. Spiker and Serelda Arnold Spiker. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Mildred Leona (Green) Spkier, on Oct. 5, 1968.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II and received the Purple Heart. Before retirement, he worked for the William R. Goble Heating and Roofing Co. as a truck driver, and for the city of Frostburg roads department. He suffered from multiple sclerosis for the past 15 years.
Surviving are his second wife, Dorothy Spiker, Pinto; seven children, Milburn Quentin Spiker, Hedgesville, W.Va., Dorothy Jean Schurg, Frostburg, Shirley Marie Collins, Ridgeley, W.Va., David Leslie Spiker, Cumberland, Joseph Ellis Spiker, Eckhart, Gary Lee Spiker, Effingham, Ill., and Karen Sue Spiker, Cresaptown; 15 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and nine step-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by the Cumberland Crematory, Cumberland, and Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg.
Memorial services were held Monday, March 16, 1998, at 1 p.m. at Rocky Gap Veterans cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis and the Heart Association.
KEVIN EUGENE "SPIKE" SPIKER
FROSTBURG - Kevin Eugene "Spike" Spiker, age 27, of Frederick, died suddenly on Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998, in Frostburg as the result of an all-terrain vehicle accident.
Born Aug. 26, 1971, in Frostburg, he was the son of Leonard Spiker, Frederick, and Catherine (Wilhelm) Spiker, Frostburg.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents James and Freda Spiker.
Mr. Spiker was employed by Buhl Electric of Sterling, Va., and Bob Evans Family Restaurant, Frederick. He attended the God's Ark of Safety Church, Frostburg. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks #470, and was an avid outdoorsman.
Surviving in addition to his parents are his stepmother, JoAnn Spiker, Frederick; maternal grandparents, Asa and Rose Wilhelm, Avilton; three sisters, Dan-ette J. Spiker, Ren-ee S. Spiker, both of Frostburg, and Christina M. Spiker, Frederick; two stepbrothers, Donald W. Tharp, Martinsburg, W.Va., John Thomas Tharp, Erie, Pa.; one stepsister, Trish Ann Tharp, Brandon, Fla.; a half brother, David W. Spiker, Cascade; and many other family members and friends, including very special friends Becky Densmore and Richard Elger.
Friends will be received at the God's Ark of Safety Church, Cherry Lane, Frostburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted there on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Greene and the Rev. Everett Spence officiating.
Interment will be in the Emmanuel Methodist Church cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be directed to God's Ark of Safety Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg.
VIRGINIA D. SPIKER
GRANTSVILLE - Virginia D. Spiker, 72, of 1739 Durst Road, Grantsville, died Sunday, July 26,1998, at Meyersdale Medical Center.
Born in McHenry on March 18, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Nellie (Beeman) Durst.
Mrs. Spiker was a homemaker. She was a member of the Laughlin Church of the Brethren, American Legion Auxiliary, and the Casselman Valley Sportsmen.
Mrs. Spiker is survived by her husband, Hubert Spiker; eight sons, James Spiker, McHenry, William Spiker, Grantsville, Raymond Spiker, Oakland, John David Spiker-Durst, Frostburg, Joseph Spiker, Grantsville, Gary Spiker, Meyersdale, Terry Spiker and Robert Spiker, both of Grantsville; one daughter, Judy Uphold, Grantsville; three brothers, Harry Durst and Frank Durst, Grantsville, and John Durst, Frostburg; four sisters, Lillie Belle Farve, Ohio, Mary Warnick, Evelyn Knox and Ethel Kinzey, all of Grantsville; 21 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ross Glotfelty officiating.
Interment will be in the Durst cemetery.
FLORENCE L. STAARMAN
CUMBERLAND - Florence LaRue Staarman, 87, of Cumberland, died Monday, March 9, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 1, 1910, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Maurice E. and Bertha (Johnston) Hinds. She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Staarman; and two brothers, Bernard and Dr. Eugene Hinds.
Mrs. Staarman was a homemaker. She was a 1928 graduate of St. Mary's High School, a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and the Church Sodality; a Charter member of the 4th District Democratic Women's Club, American Legion, Fort Cumberland Post #13 Ladies Auxiliary; Western Maryland Labor Council #1855; Senior Citizens Club; a Charter member of the St. Mary's Mothers' Club; and she was an Election Judge.
Surviving are one son, William J. Staarman and wife, Margaret, Downington, Pa.; two daughters, Sr. Mary Martha Staarman, O.S.U., West Chester, Pa.; Margaret A. Hook and husband, William, Cumberland; four grandchildren, Mary D. Hook, Cumberland; Phillip M. Hook, Towson, Jennifer Staarman, Downington, and Kathleen L. Hook, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a Christian Wake, Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Milton A. Hipsley and the Rev. William F. Moody as celebrants.
Interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Cumberland.
LARENE ANN STACEY
FROSTBURG - Larene Ann (Williams) Stacey, 64, of Woodruff, Utah, formerly of Frostburg, died Jan. 29, 1998, at her home.
Born July 27, 1933, in Frostburg, she was the daughter of the late Wilbert and Ethel June (Fisher) Williams. She also was preceded in death by her son, Richard Wilbert Stacey.
One June 3, 1950, she married
Wayne G. Stacey in Frostburg. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions within the church, including secretary in the Young Women's program and secretary in the Relief Society.
She loved to knit, embroider, and sew; and she loved to be with her family.
Surviving are her husband, Wayne, of Woodruff; sons, Russell Stacey, West Jordan, Utah, Ernest Stacey, Fort Bridger, Wyo., Kerry Stacey and Dale Stacey, both of Woodruff, Kelly Stacey, Sierra Vista, Ariz., Mark Stacey, West Jordan, Steven Stacey and Todd Stacey, both of Woodruff; daughters, Sharon Hutchinson, Woodruff, Barbara Bennet, Green River, Wyo., and Susan Stocking, Evanston, Utah; brothers Wilbert Williams, Jr., and Dale K. Williams and wife, Linda, all of Frostburg; and 34 grandchildren.
Services and interment were in Woodruff.
JOHN A. STAJDUHAR
PITTSBURGH - John A. Stajduhar, 81, of 1381 Anderson Road, Pittsburgh, died Saturday at his residence.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Mattingly, formerly of Cumberland, Md.; five children; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Meredith Marie Marshall.
Friends were received at the Healy-Hahn Funeral Home, Pittsburgh, on Sunday and Monday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, North Avenue and Farragut Street, Millvale, Pittsburgh, on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Interment will be in the St. Augustine Mausoleum, Pittsburgh.
THOMAS P. STAKEM
MIDLAND - Thomas Paul Stakem, 78, of 14934 Paradise St., Midland, died Oct. 26, 1998, at home.
He was born March 5, 1920, at Midland, a son of the late John Joseph Stakem and Annie (Byrne) Stakem.
He was a retired clerk of Moreland Plumbing & Heating, a former employee of Dashield Dairy, Midland, a graduate of Catherman's Business School, and Chief Judge of Orphans Court, Cumberland. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, and the K. of C., Cumberland.
Surviving are one brother, John "Jack" Stakem and wife, Ginny, Frostburg; and one sister, Pauline O'Brien and husband, Daniel, Midland; one nephew, J. Lawrence Mills, BelAir; two nieces, Paula James, Midland, and Julie Stakem, Frostburg; one great-nephew, Colyn Mills; and two great-nieces, Maggie Mills and Caitlin Mills, all of BelAir.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 1998, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Midland, on Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at 9:30 a.m., with Father Ed Hendricks as Celebrant.
Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic cemetery, Midland.
A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with Sister Joan Maenner, OSF Pastorial Life Director.
Pallbearers will be Bill Hughes, Tom James, Leonard Hughes, Lionel Baker, Roy Wilhelm and James Dick.
