FRANKLIN C. SWAIN SR.
HANCOCK - Franklin C. Swain Sr., 79, of Roberts Road, Hancock, died Wednesday, April 15, 1998, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 29, 1918, in Little Orleans, he was the son of the late Herbert and Amanda Belle (Crawford) Swain. He also was preceded in death by one son, Franklin C. Swain Jr.; one sister, Mabel Swain; and one brother, Elmer Swain.

Mr. Swain retired in 1984 after 13 years as a foreman for Asplundh Tree Expert Co. and worked in the '50s for Fairchild Aircraft Corp. and later as a carpenter. He was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Lula A. (Shoemaker) Swain of Hancock, whom he married June 14, 1947, in Hancock; two daughters, Mary Lou Mullen, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Linda Jean Wolfe, Warfordsburg, Pa.; one son, Herbert J. Swain, Hancock; three sisters, Mildred Klink, Frostburg, Velma Miller and Wilda Yonker, both of Greencastle, Pa.; three brothers, Lloyd Swain, Needmore, Pa., James B. Swain, Little Orleans, and Wendell Swain, Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends the funeral home will be open from noon until 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, April 18, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Darryl McClain officiating.

Burial will be in the Piney Plains United Methodist cemetery, Little Orleans.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock Rescue Squad Inc., 14734 Warfordsburg Road, Hancock, MD 21750.

MAXINE G. SWAIN
HANCOCK - Maxine G. Swain, 83, of High Germany Road, Hancock, died Saturday, May 16, 1998, at the Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
Born Nov. 10, 1914, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Cecil and Russcella (Hill) Schriver and the widow of William Webster Swain, who died in 1970. She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Ours and Elizabeth Trail; two brothers, Cecil Schriver and John Schriver; and one grandson, Russell D. Gordon Jr.

Mrs. Swain was retired from Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown, and was employed by the Washington County Board of Education, Food Services Department, at Hancock High School. She was a member of the Price Wesleyan Church in Little Orleans; the Piney Plains United Methodist Women; the UAW Local 842; and the AARP.

Surviving are six daughters, Shirley R. Keefer, Clear Spring, Norma M. Ridenour, Big Pool, E. Joanne Gordon, McConnellsburg, Pa., Barbara E. Rockwell, Nokomiks, Fla., Delores M. Spielman, Mooresville, N.C., and Gloria J. Hutzel, Hagerstown; two sons, James W. Swain and Gerald E. Swain, both of Hancock; two sisters, Ethel Swain, Warfordsburg, Pa., and Mabel L. Green, Cumberland; one brother, N. Eugene Schriver, Warfordsburg; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. on Monday.

Services will be held at the Piney Plains United Methodist Church, Little Orleans, on Tuesday, May 19, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Darryl McClain officiating. There will be a viewing at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to the Hancock Rescue Squad Inc., 14734 Warfordsburg Road, Hancock, MD 21750 or to the Hospice Unit of Washington County, 251 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

ROBERT D. SWARNER
HAGERSTOWN - Robert D. Swarner, 82, former resident of Cumberland, now residing in Hagerstown, died Sunday, July 5, 1998, at Avalon Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born on July 31, 1915, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Daniel Robert Swarner and Agnes K. (Irvin) Swarner. He also was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Swarner retired in 1962 from the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company, Cumberland, with 25 years of service, having worked in the production department. He was a past president of the Kelly Retirement organization, and formerly was very active in the Kelco Federal Credit Union, where he served on the board of directors. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of Fort Cumberland Post #13, American Legion, and a member of Cumberland Aerie #245 Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Swarner; one son, Robert L. Swarner, and wife, Kaye; and one daughter, Sue A. Britton, and husband, John, all of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Kight Funeral Home, 309-311 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Stephen F. Yelovich officiating.

Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

MELVIN SWAUGER
FROSTBURG - Melvin Swauger, 72, formerly of Frostburg, died Monday, Dec. 7, 1998, in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
Born in Mount Savage, he was preceded in death by one brother, Cecil Swauger.

Mr. Swauger had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Surviving are one sister, Edith Spataro, LaVale; two brothers, David Swauger, Mount Savage, and Leroy Swauger, Midlothian; three daughters; one son; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

ELSIE ANN R. (BANE) SWEITZER
WESTMINSTER - Elsie Ann Rebecca (Bane) Sweitzer, 84, formerly of LaVale, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at the Carroll County Hospital in Westminster, following an extended illness.
Born June 25, 1914, in Clarysville, she was the daughter of the late Stanley J. and Virginia M. Bane. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Sweitzer; and a daughter, Peggy Sweitzer.

Mrs. Sweitzer was a graduate of Allegany High School, class of 1933, and lived in LaVale until 1951 when the family moved to the Baltimore area. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Ellicott City where she taught the Ladies' Bible Class in Sunday School. She was an avid gardener, needle crafter and seamstress specializing in doll making.

Surviving are two daughters, Jo Brinkman and husband Thom, Westminster, with whom she resided, and Carol Jean Jones, Damascus; one sister, Emily V. Byer and husband Frank, LaVale; four grandchildren, Heidi Clark, Fred Brinkman, Michael Jones and Andrew Jones; three great-grandchildren; a niece, Linda Croft, LaVale; and a nephew, Steven Byer, LaVale.

Services were held at the Haight Funeral Home in Sykesville on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998.

ESTHER "EAS" SWEITZER
MIDLAND - Esther "Eas" A. Sweitzer, 91, of Midland, and formerly of Stringtown, Pa., died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born March 31, 1907, in Rodamer, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Jehu and Rebecca V. (Bucklew) Bucklew. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Arch M. Sweitzer, in 1974; two sisters; and one brother.

Mrs. Sweitzer was a member of Faith Community Church, Hyndman, Pa.

Surviving are a foster son, Melvin C. Boore, and wife, Helen, Manns Choice, Pa.; one sister, Nettie Cutter, Moran Manor Nursing Home, Westernport; two foster grandchildren, Jeffrey Boore, Jennifer Paul; five foster great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Serices will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Max Greenfield officiating.

Private interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

ELIZABETH J. SWENSKIE
GILMORE - Elizabeth J. Swenskie, 71, of 9290 Briar Drive, Streetsboro, Ohio, for the past 39 years, formerly of Gilmore, died Friday, Feb. 27, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna, Ohio.
Born July 22, 1926, at Gilmore, she was a daughter of the late James H. Jenkins and Marjorie (Arnold) Jenkins. She also was preceded in death by one son, Ronald G. Brode, in 1952; and four brothers.

Mrs. Swenskie was a waitress at Howard Johnson and Reserve Inn, Hudson, Ohio.

Surviving are her husband of 39 years, William Swenskie; daughters, Elizabeth Skidmore and husband Edward, Gilmore, Nadine Wampler and husband Darryl, Vale Summit, and Mary Kay Niemiec and husband Jack, Solon, Ohio; one son, James Swenskie, Medina, Ohio; and one brother, William Jenkins, Orlando, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Frye officiating.

Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
