SARAH I. SYMONS
BARTON - Sarah Isabell Symons, 80, of 19715 Sutherland Lane, Barton, died Thursday, May 28, 1998, at home.
Born June 8, 1917, in Barton, she was a daughter of the late George Edwin and Mary Ann (Klipstein) Crawford. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James David Symons, on Oct. 29, 1982; one son, Roger Lee Symons, on Dec. 9, 1951; seven brothers and sisters; and her devoted son-in-law, Robert Lee Evans, on May 3, 1996.

Surviving are her devoted daughter, Shelva Jean Evans, with whom she resided for 14 years; one brother, Marshall W. Crawford, Lonaconing; two sisters, G. Lillian Martin, Stoney Run Road, Westernport, and Anna Broadwater, Barton; three grandchildren, Betty Jean Evans, Robert Lee Evans Jr. and wife Jennifer, all of Barton, and Bonnie Lou (Evans) Centofonti and husband Pete, Romney, W.Va.; and three great-grandchildren, Robert "Robbie" Lee Evans III and Shawni Marie Evans, both of Barton, and Ashley Renee Centofonti, Romney.

At Mrs. Symons' request, her body will be cremated.

Graveside services will be held at the Laurel Hill cemetery, Moscow Mills, on Monday, June 1, 1998, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Malone officiating.

The Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be mailed to Shelva Jean Evans, P.O. Box 271, Barton, MD 21521, in support of loss.

EFFIE L. SHOCKEY
FINZEL - Effie Lillian Shockey, 80, of 2668 Finzel Road, Finzel, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at her residence.
Born May 12, 1918, in Finzel, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose (Finzel) Werner. She also was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Roy F. Shockey; one daughter, Norma Lee Fickes; and two brothers, Cecil Werner and Joseph Werner.

Mrs. Shockey was a former employee of the Celanese Fibers Corp., Cresaptown, the Pennsylvania Bra Factory, Meyersdale, Pa., and the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, Grantsville. She was a member of the New Hope United Church of Christ, Meyersdale.

Surviving are one son, Rudy Shockey and wife Sandy, one daughter, Bonnie Shockey, and son-in-law Herman Fickes, all of Finzel; five grandchildren, Billy Joe Fickes, Grantsville, Barry Fickes and wife Kim, LaVale, Kelly Shockey and fiance Jim Pennington, Tammie Shockey and Michael Shockey, all of Finzel; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Christopher Fickes, Grantsville, and Kaylyn Shockey, Finzel; one sister, Betty (Werner) McKenzie and husband Austin, and one brother, Nelson Werner and wife Verda, all of Finzel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Welsh and Pastor David Childs officiating.

Interment will be in the Finzel cemetery. Pallbearers will be Francis "Bee" Sipple, Blaine Hostetler, Dennis Sipple, Jerry Shockey, Carl Wilhelm and Joe Snyder.

The family requests that memorials be directed to the Finzel cemetery Perpetual Care Fund, c/o Patsy Bodes, 28 Old School House Road, Frostburg, MD 21532.

JAMES EDWARD "OCK" SHOCKEY SR.
LONACONING - James Edward "Ock" Shockey Sr., 93, of 21314 Charlestown Road S.W., Lonaconing, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, having been admitted there on Saturday.
Born at Lonaconing on April 12, 1905, he was a son of the late William Booth and Drusilla (Dye) Shockey. Also preceding him in death were two sons, James Edward Shockey Jr., and Leroy Shockey; one brother, William Melvin Shockey; one sister, Jennie Viola Bell; a grandson, Tommy Smith; and a great-grandson, Robert Poland. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Shockey was of the Episcopal faith.

He was retired as a coal miner after 37 years; and he retired as Street Supervisor for the Town of Piedmont after 12 years. He was a member of the Lonaconing Republican Club, the Charlestown Sportsman's Club, and the United Mine Workers.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen (Adaline) Mae (Fazenbaker) Shockey; two daughters, Evelyn A. Poland, Aliquippa, Pa., Donna J. Smith and husband, John E. "Jake;" three sons, Calvin L. Shockey and wife, Betty Mae, Marvin E. "Huck" Shockey, Gary W. Shockey and wife, Darlene, all of Lonaconing; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., Lonaconing, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

A funeral service will be held at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, P.A., on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George Loar officiating.

Interment will be in the Mountain View cemetery, Moscow Mills.

L. MARGARET SHOEMAKER
FRIENDSVILLE - L. Margaret (Dunham) S. Shoemaker, 82, of Friendship Heights Apartments, 704 Morris Ave., Friendsville, died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville.
After a fighting battle, our dear Mother has gone to be with the Lord.

Born April 28, 1915, in Friendsville, she was the daughter of the late William and Kathryn (Haenftling) Dunham. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Emert W. Shoemaker, on Nov. 6, 1990.

Margaret was a correspondent for the Republican Newspaper with the Friendsville News since 1935. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Friendsville.

Survivors include three sons, William L. Shoemaker, Greensburg, Pa., James D. Shoemaker, Pasadena, Md., and Richard E. Shoemaker, Friendsville; two daughters, H. Virginia Barnard, Roslyn, Pa., and Dorothy J. Spear, Friendsville; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Friendsville, Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating.

Interment will be in the Steele cemetery.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Grace Lutheran Church Building Fund, Friendsville.

PRISCILLA J. SHOWALTER
LAVALE - Priscilla Jane Showalter, 65, of 91 National Highway, LaVale, died Friday, May 1, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 1, 1933, in Elk Lick Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Silas M. Wilt and Mary (Fazenbaker) Wilt. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John Showalter.

Mrs. Showalter was a homemaker. She was a member of the Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Betty Lou Geary, LaVale, and Lois Marie Cutter and husband Leslie J., Frostburg; beloved friend, Robert Ball, LaVale; two brothers, Floyd Wilt and Silas Wilt, both of Meyersdale, Pa.; five grandchildren, Stephen Cutter, Jeffrey Cutter, Eric Cutter, Larna Cutter and Autumn Geary; and four great-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Corey, Destiney and Dustin Cutter.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George M. Harpold officiating.

Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

PEARL A. SHROYER
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. - Pearl A. Shroyer, 74, of Jacksonville, formerly of Ellerslie, Md., from 1977-1983, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at her home.
Born Sept. 1, 1923, at Buffalo, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William W. and Anna (Luckenbach) Anger. She also was preceded in death by her son, Earl Kerruish.

On June 27, 1957, at Quantico, Va., she married Gerald E. Shroyer. He survives along with two daughters, Cheryll A. Scozzari, Raleigh, and Janis D. Sherman, Jacksonville; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Noah E. Shroyer, LaVale; and two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Handschumacher, Cumberland, and Betty Beal, Ellerslie.

Mrs. Shroyer was a retired employee of the Post Exchange at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base and had operated the Base Day Nursery at Quantico Marine Corps Base, Va., from 1950-1959.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had attended the Ellerslie United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received at the Harvey H. Zeigler Funeral Home, Hyndman, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Rebecca J. Vardiman officiating. Interment will be in Porter cemetery near Ellerslie.

CHARLES E. SIBLEY
CUMBERLAND - Charles Edward Sibley Sr., 80, of Cumberland, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Aug. 8, 1917, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Clarence J. and Mary Elizabeth (Baker) Sibley. He also was preceded in death by one brother, Kenneth C. Sibley.

Mr. Sibley was a former employee in the maintenance department of Memorial Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II in the Fourth Infantry. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the VFW.

Surviving are his wife, E. Pauline (Hamilton) Sibley; one son, Charles E. Sibley Jr. and Dixie, Cumberland; one daughter, Charlene E. McConnell and husband Thomas, Cumberland; one brother, Paul H. Sibley, Cumberland; two sisters, Kathryn M. England, and Mildred England and husband Leon, all of Cumberland; four grandchildren, Cindy A. Kirby, Beaufort, S.C., Mark E. McConnell, Baltimore, Mace E. Sibley, Cumberland, and Laine A. Brode and husband Jeffrey, Cumberland; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew and Michael Kirby and Tanner Brode.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to the service from noon to 1 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark C. Dill officiating.

Interment will be in the Greenmount cemetery, Cumberland. Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

The family requests that contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
