ALMEDA V. SELLERS
CUMBERLAND - Almeda Virginia Sellers, 73, of 11111 Locust Grove Road, NW, Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 30, 1998, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus Garlick and the late Ethel Nora (O'Neal) Garlick. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Rife Sellers; two brothers, Christopher C. Garlick and Ralph E. Garlick; and a sister, Grace Kerns.
Mrs. Sellers was a former employee of the Celanese Corp. She was a member of Allegany United Methodist Church, Zihlman.
Surviving are a son, Richard W. Sellers and wife Dolly, Cumberland; a daughter, Carolyn L. Martz and husband Peter M., Sr., Cumberland; a brother, Marshall Garlick, Florida; four grandchildren, Earl Sellers, Lisa Sellers, J.R. Sellers and Pete Martz; and four great-grandchildren, Chris, Levi, Garrett and Derek Sellers.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George Harpold officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Richard Sellers, Earl Sellers, J.R. Sellers, Pete Martz Sr., Pete Martz Jr. and Roy Musselwhite Jr.
DR. HARRY SELTZER
HAGERSTOWN - Dr. Harry Seltzer, 78, of 10900 Clinton Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore.
Born in Cumberland on Feb. 27, 1920, he was the son of the lage Benjamin and Lillian M. Ellsworth Seltzer. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth V. Grim Seltzer, in 1982, and his second wife, Frances Kastner Seltzer, in 1993.
He began his practice of Optometry in Baltimore. He then continued in Cumberland, and later began a partnership of Mays Optical in Hagerstown in 1955, retiring in 1986. He received his doctorate from Penn State College of Optometry in Philadelphia in 1953.
From 1941 to 1945 he served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific as First Class Fire Control Man aboard the USS Buchannan and the USS Antietam. He was awarded 10 battle stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and the American Campaign medal.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hagerstown.
He was one of the founders of and was the first secretary of the Hagerstown Colt Baseball League.
He was a member of the Funkstown American Legion Post #211, and the B.P.O.E. Lodge #378 of Hagerstown.
He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie M. Parks, Hagerstown; a son, William M. Seltzer, Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and four great-granddaughters.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Charles E. Blackmon officiating.
Burial will be at the Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport.
Visitation will be at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.
JOSEPH SERRA
FROSTBURG - Joseph Serra, 84, of Frostburg, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 6, 1914, in Celico, Italy, he was the son of the late Eugene and Vincenza (DeMichael) Serra. He was also predeceased by one brother, Frank.
Mr. Serra was a local businessman as owner/operator of Royal Shoe Rebuilders. He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife, Settina (Ferrarro) Serra; one son, Joseph Serra Jr., at home; two brothers, Tony Serra and wife, Josephine, Alfred Serra and wife, Jenny; and one sister, Gilda Amelio, all of Silver Spring.
At Mr. Serra's request there will be no visitation in Frostburg.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, Silver Spring.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with Fr. Hurley as celebrant.
Entombment will be in the Gate of Heaven Mausoleum
Memorial contributions may be made to any Catholic charity.

HARVEY SHADWELL, SR.
CUMBERLAND - Harvey Lewis Shadwell, Sr., 72, of West Clement Street, Cumberland, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born July 25, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Charles H. and Delphia (Bean) Shadwell.
Mr. Shadwell was retired from the City of Cumberland Street Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Marion Elaine Shadwell; one son, Harvey L. Shadwell, Jr.,; one daughter, Barbara Ann Westfall and husband, Glen, all of Cumberland; one brother, Charles H. Shadwell and wife, Kitty, Leusby; two sisters, Major Patricia Johnson, Atlanta, Ga., Frances Llewellyn, Rawlings; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Mildred C. Martin officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Harvey L. Shadwell, Jr., William E. Bauman, Jr., Gregory S. Shadwell, Glen E. Westfall, Chris Ryan and Jeff Brotemarkle.
EVELYN J. SHAFFER
OAKLAND - Evelyn Jean Shaffer, 62, of Combination Road, Oakland, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Sept. 8, 1935, in Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Sherman and Evelyn (Kelley) Kelly.
She was a hostess for 10 years at the Arby's Restaurant, Oakland, and attended the Terra Alta (W.Va.) Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by her husband, Albert S. "Junior" Shaffer Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth J. "Nita" Upton, Oakland, and Leslie Roxann McGainey, Baltimore; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 28, 1998, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Joshua Lively officiating.
Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery, Elk Garden, W.Va.
PAUL E. SHAFFER
CUMBERLAND - Paul E. Shaffer, 84, of Paca Street, Cumberland, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at his home.
Born April 16, 1913, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Paul E. and Ada (Rosenmerkel) Shaffer. He also was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carrie K. Shaffer, on June 19, 1997.
Mr. Shaffer attended Park Place United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a civilian at the Jacksonville Naval Base, and was a guard for prisoners in Germany.
Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Frances Brant, Cumberland, and Gertrude McLeaf, Lakewood, Fla.; a niece and caretaker, Carrol Bower, LaVale; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 10 a.m. to noon.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at noon with the Rev. Lee Brotemarkle, interim pastor of Park Place United Methodist Church, officiating.
Interment will follow in Zion Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Donald Bower, Robert Bower, Donald McCleaf, Paul McCleaf and James Whitman. Honorary pallbearer will be Cecil Sines.
