UTELKA "PEGGY" EMMA THORPE
CUMBERLAND - Utelka "Peggy" Emma Thorpe, 92, of 229 Baltimore Ave., Cumberland, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born April 5, 1905, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William A. Willhide and the late Jessie B. (Robey) Willhide. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Thorpe; two daughters, Shirley May Weaver and Betty Lou Spaur; a son, William Edward Thorpe; a brother, Albert O. Willhide; and a sister, Wilma V. Rumer.
Mrs. Thorpe was a member of the Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a son, E. Allen Thorpe, Cumberland; a sister, Jessie A. Taylor, Piedmont, W.Va.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Interment will be in the Queens Point cemetery, Keyser.
MELBA G. TICE
CUMBERLAND - Melba G. Tice, 81, of Bel Air, Cumberland, died Monday, April 13, 1998, at her residence.
Born May 27, 1916, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas Johnson and Betty (Rutherford) Johnson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Pidgie" Tice, in September 1994.
Mrs. Tice retired from J.C. Penney after 20 years of service. She also was a homemaker.
Surviving are one son, Fred Tice and wife, Sandy, Central, Calif.; two grandsons, Rod and Jeff Tice, both of Central; one sister, Margaret Lord, Mahoney City, Pa.; one brother, Eddie Johnson, Laurel; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Johnson, Champion, Pa.
At Mrs. Tice's request, she will be cremated. A memorial service will be conducted at the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap, Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.
The family requests contributions be made to the Memorial Hospital Hospice Unit.

PHILLIP H. TICHNELL
KITZMILLER - Phillip Hugh Tichnell "Yardbird," age 72, of Kitzmiller, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 1998, at his residence.
Born Aug. 5, 1926, in Beryl, W.Va., he was a son of the late James A. and Eva Hartman Tichnell.
Mr. Tichnell was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and Korea.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Marguerite (Bobo) Tichnell; three sons, Daniel Lee Tichnell and Paul Hugh Tichnell, both of Kitzmiller, and Rusty Allen Tichnell of Swanton; two sisters, Clara M. Paugh, Swanton, and Charlotte Bowman, McCoole; and five grandchildren.
Friends will be received on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. George A. Tichinel officiating.
Interment will be in the Tichnell cemetery, Chestnut Grove.
ELSIE M. TIMMERMAN
MOUNTAIN LAKE PARK - Elsie Mabel Timmerman, 96, of 99 Holly Lane, Mountain Lake Park, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born April 14, 1902, in Garrett County, she was a daughter of the late Amos Bittinger and Elizabeth (Brenneman) Bittinger. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Timmerman, in 1963.
Mrs. Timmerman was retired from Garrett County Memorial Hospital, where she worked as a seamstress and was a member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Harold Timmerman, Oakland, and George Timmerman, Sunnyvale, Calif.; three daughters, Helen Clary, Mountain Lake Park, Ruth Friend, Swanton, and Wilma Friend, Deer Park; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Gail Hixon officiating.
Interment will be in the Pleasant Valley cemetery.
JOSEPH "JODY" TIPPING
FROSTBURG - Joseph "Jody" Tipping, age 77, of 100 Honeysuckle Lane, Apartment 120, Frostburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Aug. 1, 1921, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late George and Veronica (McGuire) Tipping. He was also preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Mr. Tipping was retired as a maintenance man from St. Michael's Catholic Church, Frostburg, where he also was a member. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of the Sons of the American Legion Unit #24.
Surviving are his wife, Betty (Hyde) Tipping; three stepsons, Jimmy Morgan, Frostburg, Rick Brodbeck, Frostburg, and Jeff Brodbeck, Cresaptown; two stepdaughters, Anna Connor, Hagerstown, and Carol Cespedes, Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Margaret King, Norwalk, Ohio, and Virginia "Virgie" Cutlip, Manaway, Ohio; one brother, Bobby Tipping, Euclid, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave., Frostburg, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Michael's on Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Paul Byrnes as celebrant.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
GRACE E. TIPTON
CUMBERLAND - Grace E. Tipton, 90, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Lincoln.
Born on Oct. 26, 1907, in Shawano, Wisc., she was the daughter of the late Otto and Albertina Wiegand. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Tipton, in 1953; and a daughter, Lois Tipton, in 1948.
Mrs. Tipton was a member of Southwood Lutheran Church. She was a retired bookkeeper with the State of Maryland and with Pittsburgh Plate Glass. She was an enthusiastic bowler with the Senior Citizens and looked forward to meeting her friends at the alley each day.
She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Paolini, with whom she lived; one son, Ronald Tipton and wife Marlene, Grand Terrace, Calif.; one sister, Pearl Rueckert, Shawano; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation and a funeral service were held in Lincoln. Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, LaVale, is in charge of local arrangements.
Graveside services will be held in the Davis Memorial cemetery near Cumberland on Monday, April 27, 1998, at 1 p.m.

KENNETH L. TOOHEY
CRESAPTOWN - Kenneth L. Toohey, 73, of Cresaptown, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born May 29, 1924, in Boynton, Pa., he was the son of the late Kenneth L. and Orpha (Holler) Toohey. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Regina (Skelley) Toohey, in 1973.
Mr. Toohey was a retired school teacher having taught in Prince Georges County. He was a graduate of Frostburg State University and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Cumberland Moose Lodge 271; American Legion Greenbelt Post 136; and Cresaptown Eagles Aerie 2883.
Surviving are his wife, Jean (Harmison) Toohey; a daughter, Lana Lease, Clearwater, Fla.; a stepson, Michael Skelley, Cresaptown; two stepdaughters, Jerilyn Smith, Romney, W.Va., and Kerry Mowery, West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Toohey was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Monday.
