ROGER W. FAZENBAKER
WESTERNPORT - Roger W. Fazenbaker, 78, of 304 Likens St., Westernport, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 6, 1918, in Bloomington, he was a son of the late Floyd A. Fazenbaker and the late Ethel B. (Green) Fazenbaker. He also was preceded in death by an infant son, Donald Alvin Fazenbaker; and two brothers, Paul and Bernard Fazenbaker. He is the last survivor of his immediate family.
Mr. Fazenbaker formerly worked at B&O; Railroad as a fireman-engineer. He retired from Westvaco Corp. from quality control. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and served in the South Pacific. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church; Tuesday Night Bowling League; and Victory Post 155 American Legion. He was a past president of the Tri-State Lost Chord Club, and an avid bowler, hunter, and fisherman. He also spent many hours visiting bedsides of laryngectomees.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Mildred (Grove) Fazenbaker; two sons, Roger N. Fazenbaker and wife Fran, Westernport, and R. David Fazenbaker and wife Kathy, Keyser, W.Va.; three daughters, Rebecca A. Stickley, Jacksonville, Fla., Susan E. Nelson and husband Jim, South Fulton, Tenn., and Norma K. Dunwody and husband David, Culpepper, Va.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Jarrett, the Rev. Meredith Ball, and the Rev. Sumner Sawyer officiating.
Interment will be in Bloomington cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, or Sacred Heart Hospice.
JAMES H. BROTEMARKLE
CUMBERLAND - James Henry Brotemarkle, 95, of Cumberland, formerly of Bowmans Addition, died at the Allegany County Nursing Home.
Born July 18, 1902, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Harry W. Brotemarkle and Mary K. Hinkle. He also was preceded in death by his wife, the Rev. Elva C. (Weller) Johnson Brotemarkle; one brother; two sisters; and two sons, James Brotemarkle and William R. Brotemarkle Sr. Mr. Brotemarkle was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Mr. Brotemarkle was the retired owner and operator of Brotemarkle Wall Papering Service. He was a member and co-founder, along with his wife, of the Grace Community Church, Valley Road. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.
Surviving are three daughters, Ruth Johnson Eck and husband Donald, Newark, Del., the Rev. Florence Shewbridge, Rawlings, and Sharon F. Keefer and husband James, Cumberland; one daughter-in-law, Phyllis Brotemarkle, Rawlings; five grandchildren, William R. Brotemarkle, James H. Brotemarkle, Nancy Shirey, Donald B. Eck Jr., and Lois Drell; and several great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Rodney L. Casteel Sr. officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park.
REBECCA I. BROTEMARKLE
CUMBERLAND - Rebecca Irene Long Brotemarkle, 83, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Nov. 29, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 17, 1914, in Saltillo, Pa., she was the daughter of the late George F. and Clara (Snyder) Long. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Leslie Brotemarkle Sr., in 1958. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Brotemarkle was a retired nurse's aide from the Cumberland Nursing Home. She was a former employee of the Ali Ghan Shrine Club, and was a member of Kingsley United Methodist Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Ellen G. Brotemarkle, Edna I. Brotemarkle, and Diana E. (Brotemarkle) Kifer, all of Cumberland; one son, James L. Brotemarkle Jr. and wife Paulette, Cumberland; one stepdaughter, Marlene (Brotemarkle) Glaze, W.Va.; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
At Mrs. Brotemarkle's request, there will be no visitation.
A graveside service will be conducted at Sunset Memorial Park on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Richard H. Jewell officiating.
The Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
JOYCE M. EVERSOLE
SWANTON - Joyce M. Eversole, 60, of Lower Green Glade Road, Swanton, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, at Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 25, 1936, in Piedmont, W.Va., she was the daughter of Zena (Simmons) Hartman, of Keymont, W.Va., and the late Arthur Hartman. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Hartman.
Mrs. Eversole formerly worked at Automated Packaging of Keyser, and Keyser Health Care. She was a member of the Westernport Church of the Brethren.
Surviving in addition to her mother are a lifelong companion, Gary Paugh, Swanton; two sons, Joseph Eversole, New Creek, W.Va., and David Eversole, Fort Ashby, W.Va.; two daughters, LeeAnn Andrews, Keyser, W.Va., and Frances Green, Keymont; one brother, Carl Hartman, New Creek; three sisters, Helen Imperio, Keymont, Delores Shears, Keyser, and Ann Shirley Hyde, Fort Ashby; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Ervin Huston officiating.
Interment will be in Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
PEARL L. CAGE
CUMBERLAND - Pearl Levetta Cage, 91, of Second Street, Cumberland, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at the Cumberland Nursing Home.
Born June 25, 1905, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Mamie (Lashley) Allen. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Cage; and one son, William F. Cage.
Mrs. Cage was a homemaker. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Betty V. McGreevy, Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Nina L. Hemmis, Cumberland, and Ida M. Ruttler and husband James, Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren, Michael J. McGreevy, Reynoldsburg, Paula C. Hedrick and husband William, Joseph W. Hemmis Jr. and wife Barbara, Sue A. Buzzard and husband Thomas, and Harry Cage, all of Cumberland, James Ruttler and wife Anne, Germany, Doreen Parker and husband Mike, Tina Martin and husband Tim, all of Albuquerque; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Mark C. Dill officiating.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Cumberland.
Great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
FLORENCE B. ESSERS
BALTIMORE - Florence B. Hager Essers, 70, of Towson, formerly of Flintstone, died Friday, Oct. 10, 1997, at St. Joseph's Medical Center, Baltimore.
Born on April 6, 1927, she was married
to Henrick Essers in 1951.
Mrs. Essers was a graduate of George Washington University where she was the national president of the Lutheran Student Association.
She taught science in the Washington, D.C. school system from 1950 to 1956. She was a guidance counsellor for Baltimore County schools from 1964 to 1990, working at Dulaney, Lansdowne, and Cockeysville Middle Schools. She retired from Cockeysville as the department head. She started the peer counseling program at Dulaney Middle School, which served as the model for other school systems. During retirement, she founded and ran the Town Hill Hotel Bed and Breakfast in Flintstone, Allegany County.
Surviving are her husband, Henrick Essers; one son, John B. Essers; and one grandson, Michael John Essers.
Friends will be received at the Ruck Towson Funeral Home Inc., Towson, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Russell Hoffman officiating.
Interment will be in Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
JOHN VINCENT "PAPPY" GRABENSTEIN
CUMBERLAND - John Vincent "Pappy" Grabenstein, 73, of Cumberland, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at his daughter's residence in Mount Airy.
Born Dec. 16, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Joseph A. and Anna (Elliott) Grabenstein. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Florence M. (Canning) Grabenstein, May 6, 1996; one sister, Mary Jo Grabenstein; and two brothers, Raymond Al Grabenstein and Eugene Grabenstein.
Mr. Grabenstein was retired from the PPG Industries of Cumberland and Mount Zion, Ill. He was a graduate of LaSalle High School and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the South Pacific, where he was a member of 775th Tanker Battalion Company C. He was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and the American Legion, Fort Cumberland Post 13.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Jo Dougherty, Cumberland, and Vincent J. Dougherty, Ridgeley, W.Va., Bonnie S. Thomas and husband, Dave, Cresaptown, Therese L. Monahan and husband, Michael, Mount Airy; three brothers, Charles F. Grabenstein, Branford, Conn., Joseph "Bill" Grabenstein, Florida, and Walter L. Grabenstein, Bradenton, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Vincent James Dougherty Jr., John J. Dougherty, Brandon S. Grabenstein, Jennifer N. Thomas, Thomas C. Monahan, Michael F. Monahan and Anna T. Monahan.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church Saturday at 10 a.m. with the Fr. Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap. as celebrant.
A Christian Wake will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 8:45 p.m.
Interment will be in SS Peter and Paul cemetery. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
