BERNARD B. BAKER
CUMBERLAND - Bernard B. Baker, 83, of Utah Avenue, Cumberland, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser and the Rev. R. W. Eichel Sr. officiating, with Kenny Rice, pianist, and Louie Twigg, soloist.
Interment will follow in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.
Pallbearers will be Johnny Kahl, Johnny Baker, Keith Dorsey, Ed Jarrett, Tim Lykens, Jeff Wheeler, George Kahl Jr., David Basset, Chuck Evans, and his namesake, Bernard Bruce Kahl.
Honorary plaabearers will be Daniel Smith, Joshua Smith, Robert Baker, David Baker and Andrew Baker.

BERNARD B. BAKER
CUMBERLAND - Bernard B. Baker, 83, of Utah Avenue, Cumberland, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 2, 1914, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Andrew B. and Lucy Mae (Huff) Baker. He also was preceded in death by one son, John Andrew Baker; and two granddaughters, Karen Willison and Stacey Kahl.
Mr. Baker attended the Mountain Top Holiness Church. He retired from the B & O Railroad as an engineer. He was a member of Fort Cumberland Lodge No. 211 A.F.& A.M., York Rite, Brotherhood of Railroad Workers, and Eastern Star Cumberland Chapter No. 56.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Martha L. Stafford Baker; two sons, Ronald L. Baker and wife Peggy, Fayetteville, N.C., and William B. Baker and wife Delores, Darnestown; four daughters, Dorothy E. Willison and husband Nelson, Cumberland, Donna R. Kahl and husband George, Frankfort, Ill., Mary E. Kahl and husband John, Cumberland, and Vickie L. Sharp and husband Richard, Orlando, Fla.; one sister, Dorothy E. Dealehauser, Cumberland; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Masonic services will be conducted by Fort Cumberland Lodge No. 211 on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.

TWILA V. BACHTEL
OAKLAND - Twila Virginia Bachtel, 95, of 605 Garrett Highway, Oakland, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 1997, at Dennett Road Manor Nursing Home, Oakland.
Born April 3, 1902, in Horse Shoe Run, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late George Houser and Florence (Winters) Houser. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Mark O. Bachtel in 1973, and a daughter, Geneva Junkins.
Surviving are three sons, Clifton Bachtel, Horse Shoe Run, W.Va., Eugene Bachtel, Eglon, W.Va., and Kenneth Bachtel, Oakland; three daughters, Pauline Best, Riva, Md., Juanita Blamble, Port St. Lucie, Fla., and JoAnn Gehman, Lititz, Pa.; two brothers, Earl Houser, Oakland, and Kenneth Houser, Willowick, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church, Red House, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. William Connelly officiating.
Interment will be in St. John's cemetery.
The family suggests memorials take the form of contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church.
LENA C. BACHTEL
OAKLAND - Lena C. Bachtel, 91, of Oakland, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at the home of her daughter in Silver Spring.
Born June 5, 1906, in Red House, and was a daughter of the late Franklin B. Shaffer and Annie (Slabaugh) Shaffer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Bachtel, in 1974. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Bachtel was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Red House.
Surviving are one son, Harold V. Bachtel, Oakland; three daughters, Helen Nine, Silver Spring, Patricia Ryland, Baltimore, and Grace Ault, Bel Air, Md.; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. William Connelly officiating. Friends may call at the church one half hour prior to the service.
Interment will be in St. John's cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family suggests expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to St. John's Lutheran Church or the Hospice of Garrett County.
C. KENNETH BABCOCK
FROSTBURG - C. Kenneth Babcock, 91, of Frostburg, died Thursday, July 17, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital Hospice Unit.
Born October 11, 1905, in Monroe, N.Y., he was the son of the late Marcellus and Lenah (Bull) Babcock. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma (Cahoon) Babcock; and a daughter, Susan Babcock Bisignano.
Mr. Babcock was a retired physical education instructor and coach. He taught 20 years at Frostburg State University. While there, he coached many sports including soccer and basketball. He left Frostburg State to teach in Howard County for one year. He finished his career at Allegany College as both physical education instructor and soccer coach.
Mr. Babcock was one of the founders of the JCP Soccer League and was one of the coaches for the Frostburg Rangers. He was active in the Allegany County SCAMPS, and participated in the Senior Citizens Olympics on the local, state, and national levels.
Mr. Babcock was elected as the fourth entrant to the Bobcat Hall of Fame. He was an active member of the committee to establish a new public library in Frostburg.
Surviving are four daughters and their families, Harriet Roe, Boston, Mass., Jane Eberly and husband David, Burke, Va., Marcia Smith and husband Harry, LaVale, and Elizabeth Simpson and husband William, LaVale; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation and services will be private.
A memorial service will be held at Frostburg State University at a later date.
The family requests memorials take the form of donations to the Frostburg State University Foundation in memory of Mr. Babcock.
The Durst Funeral Home, Frostburg, is in charge of the arrangements.
MARY M. HENRY
CUMBERLAND - Mary Madeline Henry, 84, of the Devlin Manor Nursing Home, formerly of LaVale, died Thursday, March 6, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 2, 1913, in LaVale, she was the daughter of the late George and Catherine Wintermyer. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Albert A. Henry.
Mrs. Henry was a retired manager for Shriver Oil Co., Cumberland. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are one sister, Marion Crowe and husband Carl, Washington, D.C.; and several nieces and cousins.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be conducted on Friday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday at noon with Father Vance Pastorius, O.F.M., Cap., officiating.
Interment will be in the SS. Peter and Paul cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David Dressman, John Kaylor, Floyd Kaylor III, Patrick Kidwell, Michael Himmler and Robert Himmler.
