JOHN M. COSGROVE
CUMBERLAND - John Martin Cosgrove, 78, of 13301 Winchester Road, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Memorial Hospital shortly after arrival.
Born Feb. 5, 1919, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Edward Peter and Margaret Elizabeth (Turner) Cosgrove.
Mr. Cosgrove was retired from Durham Products, Durham, N.C. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Disabled American Veterans, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, E. Retha (Mauzy) Cosgrove; two sons, John Patrick Cosgrove and wife Barbara, Roanoke, Va., and Thomas Michael Cosgrove and wife JoAnn, Tabb, Va.; a daughter, Theresa Marie Cosgrove, Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Charles B. Cosgrove, Cumberland, and Clement J. Cosgrove, Cleveland, Ohio; a sister, Nonnita Grabenstein, LaVale; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with Deacon Frank L. Werner officiating.
Interment will be in I.O.O.F. cemetery, Flintstone.
PATIENCE V. JACKSON
CUMBERLAND - Patience Virginia "Pat" Jackson, 63, of Cumberland, died Sunday, July 20, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 24, 1934, in Mount Savage, she was the daughter of the late Russell Geary Uhl and the late Margaret (Drummond) Uhl. She also was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children, Charles R. Jackson; and a sister, Carol Gay Huffman, on Oct. 7, 1995. She was the last member of her immediate family.
Mrs. Jackson was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church; the Secular Order of St. Francis; and the Allegany County Stroke Club. She was employed as a desk clerk at the former Allegany Inn on Baltimore Avenue. She also worked as a waitress at the former Central Quick Lunch and the South Cumberland Club.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph Michael Jackson and wife Ora Lee, Frostburg, and Charles R. Jackson, Shark River Hills, N.J.; two daughters, Gail Tressler and husband Terry, Garrett, Pa., and Patience Reed, Mount Savage; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a special friend, Robert C. Gumphrey, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Thursday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Father Vernon Busch as celebrant.
Interment will be in the Mount Savage United Methodist cemetery.
A Christian Wake Service will be conducted on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
SHIRLEY M. COSING
FAIRFAX, Va. - Shirley Mae Cosing, 69, of 3693 Persimmon Circle, Fairfax, died Saturday, June 7, 1997, at Eastern State Hospital, Williamsburg.
Born May 14, 1928, at Lonaconing, Md., she was a daughter of the late Odilo and Marie (Kiefer) Baumann.
Mrs. Cosing was a former secretary for the National Education Association in Washington D.C. She was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Maryland. She was Presbyterian by faith, and a member of the Lonaconing Republican Club.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur P. Cosing Jr.; one son, Arthur Paul Cosing III, Manassas; and one sister, Madeline Lambert, Gaithersburg, Md.
The body will be cremated.
Private graveside services will be held at the Oak Hill cemetery.
The Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, is in charge of arrangements.
LEROY A. COSNER, SR.
WALKERSVILLE - Leroy Allen Cosner, Sr., 37, of Walkersville, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 1997, at the Frederick (Md.) Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mrs. Gwen Lorene Lee Cosner, his wife of 17 years.
Born on July 21, 1960, in Petersburg, W.Va., he was the son of Mrs. Betty Jane Hanlin Cosner, Romney, W.Va., and the late Luther Dorris Cosner.
Mr. Cosner attended the Apostolic Lighthouse, Frederick, and was the president of Tri-State Paving Inc. of Walkersville.
He was a loving father and husband, a kind and compassionate man who was loyal to his friends, and an employer with integrity.
Besides being active with his business, Mr. Cosner found time to enjoy boating and fishing.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons at home, Leroy Allen, Jr., and Anthony Scott Cosner; a sister, Helen Frick and husband, Charles, Ormond Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Leon Cosner and wife Linda, Winchester, Va., and Ronald Cosner, Stephens City, Va.; father-in-law, Gayle Lee, of Tulsa, Okla.; and mother-in-law, Bonnie Tuller, Damascus; other in-laws, nieces and nephews, family and close friends.
Friends may call at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, on Wednesday, from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the Apostolic Lighthouse, 7857 Gambrill Park Rd., Frederick, on Thursday, beginning at noon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening and at church on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at the church on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. The Rev. Michael W. Mangold will officiate, assisted by the church ministry.
Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
GRETA MAE COUTER
CUMBERLAND - Greta Mae Couter, 65, of Cumberland, died Nov. 9, 1997, at her home.
Born Oct. 4, 1932, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late French Grant Hicks and the late Verna Mae (Schoppert) Hicks. She also was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Olivia Lechliter; and a sister, Mary Louise Decker.
Mrs. Couter was a receptionist for WTBO Radio Station. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was the former owner of Mother Nature's Pantry in LaVale. Mrs. Couter was a past president of the Cresaptown Eagles Auxiliary. She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School Class of 1950.
Surviving are four daughters, Dena L. Hammersmith and husband, Charles, Cumberland, Diane K. Pryor and husband, Rick, Cumberland, Beverly A. Dean and husband, William, Cumberland, and Amy S. Lechliter and husband, Steven, Rawlings; ten grandchildren, Jason Hammersmith, Ivan Hammersmith, Nicholas Pryor, Joshua Heinrich, Heather Hammersmith, Gretchen Pryor, Elizabeth Dean, Sarah Dean, Rachel Dean, and Katelin Lechliter.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. John J. Duffus officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
BETTY L. COWDEN
CUMBERLAND - Betty Leigh Cowden, 73, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born April 4, 1924, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Floyd Crabtree and Mary Edith (Hartman) Crabtree.
Mrs. Cowden also was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Punch" Cowden, Sr.; two brothers, Charles Crabtree and Donald Crabtree; and one grandson.
She was Methodist by faith.
Mrs. Cowden was a homemaker, having previously worked at the Celanese Plant. She enjoyed duckpin bowling and playing shuffleboard.
Mrs. Cowden was a member of the Women of the Moose, Chapter #914, where she was the Past Senior Regent; Ladies Auxiliary of F.O.E., Aerie #245; Cumberland Outdoor Club; and Ladies Auxiliary of the Goodfellowship Social Club.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Cowden, Jr., and Earle Cowden, both of Cumberland; two daughters, Susan (Cowden) White and Patricia Cowden, both of Cumberland; two brothers, Harold Crabtree, LaVale, and George "Eddie" Crabtree, Ridgeley, W.Va.; one sister, Dorothy "Dottie" (Crabtree) Jones, Bowling Green; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Cynthia Frye officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Serving as pallbearers will be John Morgan, Raymond Stallings, Mason Appel, Robert Mace, William Gerwig, and Raymond Gephart.
