LYGIA R. GARLITZ
CUMBERLAND - Lygia Rebecca Garlitz, 82, of St. Marys Avenue, Cumberland, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Oct. 25, 1914, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Harry Heatherington and Ethel Elizabeth (Nichols) Robinson. She also was preceded in death by her husband, James Harvey Garlitz, in 1988; and one sister, Ruth Lee Moser.
Mrs. Garlitz was a homemaker and a mother of four. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland. She was a 1933 graduate of Allegany High School and was Miss Allegany 1933, a member of the Cumberland Elks BPO No. 63 Ladies Auxiliary, and a volunteer for the Allegany County League for Crippled Children.
Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Kienhofer and husband Charles, Hockessin, Del., Joan Bourassa and husband Lee, Atlanta, Ga., and Gail Smith, Ellicott City; one son, Gary Garlitz and wife Charlene, Herndon, Va.; 12 grandchildren, Andrea Thomson, Brian Kienhofer, Mark Keuls, Stacey Axel, Steven Keuls, Julie Goldberg, Erin Bishop, Colleen Rupkalvis, Jennifer Smith, David Garlitz, Michele Campbell, and Kristine Garlitz; and 7 great-grandchildren, Caroline Thomson, Jacqueline Thomson, Natalie Kienhofer, Alex Axel, Nicholas Bishop, Quinton Keuls, and Mitchel Garlitz.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday at 1 p.m. with Dr. O. Morton Harris Jr. officiating. There will be one hour visitation prior to the service.
Pallbearers will be David Garlitz, Mark Keuls, Steven Keuls, Clay Thomson, Cliff Murphy and Shaun O'Neal.
Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Allegany County League for Crippled Children Inc., Willowbrook Road, Cumberland MD 21502.
MARY ANNA HOOK
CUMBERLAND - Mary Anna Hook, 78, of Cumberland, died Thursday, July 3, 1997, at her residence.
Born Sept. 3, 1918, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Mary L. (Jones) Weisenmiller.
Mrs. Hook was a homemaker and member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Louis W. Hook; one brother, William Weisenmiller, Cumberland; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland, on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the church on Saturday at 11 a.m. with Father Vance Pastorius, OFM, Cap., as celebrant.
Interment will be in Fairview cemetery, Artemas, Pa.
Pallbearers will be Jack Wrathford, Don Miller, Eugene Brown, and David Wolfe.
Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
DONALD L. GARDE
LONACONING - Donald Lewis Garde, 36, of Lana Lu Apartments, Main Street, Lonaconing, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Sept. 12, 1960, in Annapolis, he was a son of the late Roland Louis Garde Sr., and Mary (Bush) Bosley, Barton, and stepfather Bob Bosley.
Mr. Garde formerly worked for H&H; Bunker Well Drillers, Severna Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran, and attended Gods Little Chapel, LaVale. He was a member of the Dogwood Flat Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving in addition to his mother and stepfather are one daughter, Barbara Lynn Garde; one brother, Roland L. Garde Jr., Hagerstown; one sister, Patricia Ann Morgan, Barton; and grandparents, Brooks and Della Bosley, Barton.
Friends will be received at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be in the funeral home chapel on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Harold Malone officiating.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill cemetery, Moscow Mills.
CLARENCE R. GANK
OAKLAND - Clarence R. Gank, 72, of Tannery Road, Oakland, died Monday, March 17, 1997, at the Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born April 25, 1924, in Hutton, he was the son of the late George R. and Rosa E. (Hershman) Gank.
Mr. Gank was a retired coal miner and attended the Loch Lynn Church of God. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Proctor Kildow Post 71, American Legion, Oakland.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel R. (Arbogast) Gank; four daughters, Shirley Patterson, Tucson, Ariz., Mae L. Michaels, Oakland, Gail Moore, Elk Garden, W.Va., and Carla Stoninger, Oakland; six sons, Dayton C. Gank, Terra Alta, W.Va., Thomas Gank, Harmansville, W.Va., Jerry W. Gank, Dennis Gank, Darvin R. Gank, and Brandon K. Gank, all of Oakland; 21 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the Loch Lynn Church of God on Thursday, March 20, 1997, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Fletcher and the Rev. Dr. Greg S. Cummings officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in the Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans organizations in southern Garrett County.
EDWARD D. HOLTZMAN SR.
CUMBERLAND - Edward Dwayne Holtzman Sr., 57, of Cumberland, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, at his residence.
Born May 6, 1940, in Winchester, Va., he was the son of the late Edward and Hilda (Swisher) Holtzman.
Mr. Holtzman had served in the U.S. Navy. He was a truck driver for 35 years with Teamsters Local No. 83, Winchester, Va.
Surviving are his wife, Sara (Robinson) Holtzman; one son, Edward D. Holtzman Jr., Cumberland; three daughters, Wendy Holtzman, Glen Burnie, Kelly Holtzman and Jenny Holtzman, both of Cumberland; one step-daughter, Tangela Beem, Eckhart; four stepsons, William Olinger, Scott Olinger, Robert Beem and Michael Beem, all of Cumberland; one adopted son, Jamie Holtzman, Ohio; and three aunts, Daisey Stotler and Ula McCarty, both of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Ruby Darlington, Winchester, Va.
Friends will be received at the George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John Footen officiating.
Interment will be in Maryland State Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
JOHN B. GALFORD
CUMBERLAND - John Burton "Jack" Galford, 67, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born May 2, 1930, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late Arthur G. and Sarah J. (Cassell) Galford. He also was preceded in death by two brothers.
Mr. Galford was a machinist for the CSX Transportation Corp. He served as a U.S. Army staff sergeant during the Korean conflict. He was a life member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club, and a member of Potomac Lodge 100 AF&AM.;
Surviving are his wife, Thelma N. (Williams) Galford; one stepson, Arthur L. "Rocky" Nester; and three sisters, Margaret Helmick, Mary Wenrich, and Aretta Phillips.
Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. David D. Diehl officiating.
Interment will be in the Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.
Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
