JOHN C. HEAVENER SR.
CUMBERLAND - John Calvin Heavener Sr., 73, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at his home.
Born Aug. 16, 1924, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late George Albert Heavener and the late Bessie (Hyre) Heavener. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy (Powers) Heavener, on March 25, 1993; three brothers; and three sisters.

Mr. Heavener was a brakeman and conductor on the Western Maryland Railroad and retired from the Chessie System. He was a member of the First Christian Church D.O.C., where he was an elder. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Lillian (Allen) Hannas-Heavener, Cumberland; two sons, John C. Heavener Jr. and wife Donna, Crofton, and Jeff L. Heavener and wife Tonya, LaVale; a brother, Robert P. Heavener, Cumberland; a sister, Norma Sue Twigg and husband John, Cumberland; three grandchildren, Lindsay Heavener, Crofton, and Wayne and Brittany Heavener, LaVale; two stepdaughters, Linda Fansler and husband Clarence, Jr., Cumberland, and Kathy J. Walizer, Cresaptown; four step-grandchildren, Kevin and Kristi Walizer, Cresaptown, Diana Umstot, Cumberland, and Marsha Fansler, Cumberland; and a step-great-grandchild, Dylan Umstot, Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dan Taylor officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.

Military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

HELEN D. HEACOX
FROSTBURG - Helen D. Heacox, 97, of Frostburg, died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, in the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 5, 1900, in Osceola Mills, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John D. and Helen (Caldwell) Douglass. She also was preceded in death by her husband Albert Heacox; one son, Richard Douglass Heacox; one sister, Florence C. Nugent; and one brother, Leroy C. Douglass.

Mrs. Heacox was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Frostburg and was the owner and operator of the Heacox Shoe Store. She was a 1919 graduate of Altoona High School, she joined the GFWC Women's Civic Club of Cumberland in 1946, was a past president of the club, past treasurer and president of the Western Maryland District women's club. She was an honorary member and Director Emeritus of the Cumberland Women's Club, and was a member of the Centennial Club of Western Maryland. She also was a past president of the Cumberland AARP.

Surviving are one daughter-in-law, Janet Stevenson Heacox, LaVale; and a step-grandson, Hugh S. Bishop and wife Susan, Atlanta, Ga.

Friends will be received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Bernadette Ross officiating.

Interment will follow in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

REV. HAROLD R. HARMAN
OAKLAND - Rev. Harold R. Harman, 67, of Oakland, died Saturday, July 26, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 26, 1929, in the Cove, he was the son of the late Roy L. Harman and Cora (Weber) Harman.

Rev. Harman retired from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources after 33 years of service. He was the founder and Pastor of the New Life Christian Church and had been a dedicated employee of the Durst Funeral Home for 14 years.

Surviving are his wife Emma Jean (Uphold) Harman; two sons, H. Eugene Harman and wife Barb, and Brian D. Harman and wife Sandra; one daughter, Janet White and husband Mike, all of Oakland; one brother, Paul Harman, Frostburg; and six grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the New Life Christian Church on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Gail Hixon officiating.

Interment will be in the Sand Spring cemetery.

The family requests that memorials take the form of contributions to the New Life Christian Church or to the Southern Garrett Rescue Squad.

DOLLY M. HARPER
CUMBERLAND - Dolly Marie Harper, 84, of Race Street, Cumberland, died July 4, 1997, at Born May 10, 1913, in Oldtown, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Verdie (Rice) Dolan. Memorial Hospital, Cumberland.
She also was preceded in death by her husband Myrl L. Harper; and one daughter, Joyce Y. Harper.

Mrs. Harper was a homemaker. She was a member and past president of the Sunrise Club as well as a member and past president of the Daughters of America. Mrs. Harper operated the Penny Bingo Hall on Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, for 20 years.

Surviving are four sons, Ronald L. Harper and wife Katherine, James R. (Dick) Harper and wife Norma, Steven T. Harper and wife Linda, all of Charlotte, N.C., Gary D. Harper and wife Mona, Cumberland; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jimmie Blair officiating.

Interment will be in the St. Mary's cemetery.

Family requests that contributions be sent to the Union Rescue Mission, 16 Queen City Pavement, Cumberland, MD 21502.

Pallbearers will be Gary D. Harper, Steven T. Harper, Christopher Harper, Jim Harper, Gary James Harper and Ronald Lee Kluttz.

WILLIAM M. KEYSER
CUMBERLAND - William "Bill" M. Keyser, 90, of 8 Broadway Circle, Cumberland, died Saturday, March 8, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born Oct. 15, 1906, in West Virginia, he was the son of the late Thomas R. Keyser and the late Nannie M. (Hawkins) Keyser. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Viola (Raines) Keyser; and two sisters, Geraldine Duffy and Virginia Dickinson.

Mr. Keyser was a retired prior yard foreman after 48 years. He was a member of the United Transportation Union Lodge 600 and Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.

Surviving are two sisters, Betty Scollick and husband Dave, Cumberland, and Doris Lee Keyser, Cumberland; one brother, Eugene Keyser and wife Shirley, Cumberland; one step grandson, Larry McKenzie and wife Joyce, Centerville, Va.; and one great-grandson, Conner McKenzie, Centerville.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Chaplain Lewis Twigg officiating.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

JOHN WEBSTER HARPER
CUMBERLAND - John Webster Harper, 61, of Cumberland, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at his home.
Born Oct. 27, 1936, in Frostburg, he was the son of the late Roy Lee Harper and the late Catherine (Allen) Harper.

Mr. Harper was the owner and operator of the Maryland Motel, as well as an electrical and plumbing inspector for Middle Department Inspection Agency. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 271. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife, Norma Jean (Baker) Harper, Cumberland; a son, Jim R. Harper and wife, Krista, Cresaptown; a daughter, Lori Harper, at home; a brother Joe Harper and wife, Vada, Warfordsburg, Pa.; five sisters, Norma Jean Howsare and husband Dwight, Rock Hill, S.C., Jane Tew and husband Harvey, Everett, Pa., Joy Kay Potts and husband, Jerry, Artemas, Pa., Joan Crawford, Artemas, Pa., and Jackie Valentine and husband, Tom, Bedford, Pa.; and 16 nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. J.W. Lancaster officiating.

Interment will be in Maryland Veterans cemetery at Rocky Gap.

FRANK E. HARRIS
CUMBERLAND - Frank Elmer Harris, 76, of Cumberland, died Monday, Oct. 27, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born March 4, 1921, in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late George B. and Frances M. (Lynch) Harris. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Norma M. (Schoenrock) Harris; three brothers, Earl, Leo and Edward Harris; and one sister, Eleanor Moore.

Mr. Harris was a truck driver for Hemmingway Transfer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 13, and the Ridgeley VFW.

Surviving are two sons, Franklin Michael Harris Sr. and wife Judi, Edgewood, and William E. Harris and wife Sandra, Felton, Pa.; two daughters, Patricia E. Loy, Ridgeley, and Helen L. Benson and husband Tom, Ridgeley; four brothers, Bernard Harris, Cumberland, George Harris and wife Mary, Wiley Ford, W.Va., Eugene Harris and wife Alice, Cresaptown, and Paul Harris, Md.; two sisters, Edith Thompson, Middle River, and Lucille Bridges and husband Robert, Cumberland; 11 grandchildren, Franklin Michael Harris Jr., Michelle E. Quinn and husband Patrick, Scott D. Harris, Tina M. Lauer, William Harris and wife Sue, Kelly Layes and husband Alan, Keven Lowery and wife JoAnn, Shawn T. Benson and wife Kristine, Dawn M. Wolfe and husband Larry, Sheri A. Elliott and husband Scott, and Shannon T. Benson; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating.

Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens, LaVale.

Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.
