WALTER O. JOHNSON SR.
CUMBERLAND - Walter Ollie Johnson Sr., 95, of Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home, formerly of Valley Road, Cumberland, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Aug. 18, 1902, in Red Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Jacob and Mary Jane Johnson. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Orgle P. (Lambert) Johnson; one grandson, Donald W. Hott; one daughter-in-law, Betty Lee Johnson; three sisters; and five brothers.

Mr. Johnson was retired from the Celanese Corporation. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving are five sons, Merrill D. Lambert and wife Virginia, Clearville, Pa., Walter Johnson Jr., Cumberland, Stanley O. Johnson and wife Shirley, Valley Road, Cumberland, Robert E. Johnson and wife Carol, Westminster, and Johnny M. Johnson and wife Norma, Short Gap, W.Va.; two daughters, Viola E. Price and husband Charles, Cumberland, and Yvonne P. Werner and husband Johnny, Hyndman, Pa.; one brother, Stanley Johnson and wife Blanche, Cresaptown; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Roger Huffman officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

MARIAN E. JOHNSON
CUMBERLAND - Marian Ellen Johnson, 81, of Booth Towers, Cumberland, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 1997, at her residence.
Born May 20, 1916, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Rister Ray and Sarah Alberta (Lewis) Lepley. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene C. Johnson in 1971.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. She attended the Salvation Army, Cumberland.

Surviving are one daughter, Ellen Louise Cross, Romney, W.Va.; one son, Robert Eugene Johnson and wife Elizabeth, Hyndman, Pa.; five sisters, Lidia Juanita Rexroad, Cash Valley Road, Cumberland, Ann Dircks, Baltimore, Clara Smith, Columbus, Ohio, Evelyn Bennett, Cumberland, and Betty Smith, Geneva, Ohio; two brothers, Sylvester Lepley and Paul Lepley, both of Cumberland; three grandchildren, Debbie, Evelyn and Sarah; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Aaron.

Friends will be received at Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Ave., Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at the funeral home Thursday at noon with Captain Gayle Wakely officiating.

Pallbearers will be Sam Bennett, Bob Smith, Edward Hamilton Dircks, Danny McCafferty, Jim Shade, and Sam Houser.

Honorary pallbearer will be Edward Lepley.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

JOHN E. JOHNSON
CUMBERLAND - John E. "Johnny" Johnson, 67, of Friends Aware Group Home, Cumberland, formerly of Oakland, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born June 17, 1930, in Oakland, he was a son of the late William A. and Emma (Rice) Johnson. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Oneda Davis, formerly of Oakland; three brothers, William Amos Johnson, formerly of Sarasota, Fla., Eugene Johnson, formerly of Oakland, and Donald Johnson, formerly of Denver, Colo.

Mr. Johnson was a former member of the Mountain City Band.

Surviving are four sisters, Eleanor Stemple, Phyllis Helbig, both of Oakland, Nancy Glotfelty, and Rita Trout, both of Sarasota, Fla.; three brothers, Carl Johnson, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Gerald "Stogie" Johnson, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Wayne Johnson, Oakland.

Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Second Street, Oakland, on Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Friends Aware, 1601 Holland St., Cumberland, MD 21502.

ROBERT S. JENKINS
GRANTSVILLE - Robert Stephen Jenkins, 71, of 10192 New Germany Road, Grantsville, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born June 25, 1925, at Grantsville, he was a son of the late Ralph and Anna (Stephen) Jenkins.

Mr. Jenkins was employed as a blacktop plant foreman for Brownings Quarry. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon and elder, and was a member of the Consistory.

Surviving are his wife, Leota G. (Witt) Jenkins; two sons, Thomas D. Jenkins and wife Kathy, Grantsville, and Ralph W. Jenkins and wife, Catherine Ann, Lonaconing; a daughter, Nancy L. Pugh and husband William, Waco, Texas; a brother, Ray Jenkins, Grantsville; two sisters, Alcy Housel, Potomac Park, and Lula Smith, Winchester, Va.; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, Grantsville, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted at Trinity United Church of Christ on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Raymond Brown officiating. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Trinity Church cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ralph Livengood, John Livengood, Jim Paul, Ken Jenkins, Paul Durst, and Jim Michael.

Expressions of sympathy may be directed to either Trinity United Church of Christ or Northern Garrett County Rescue Squad.

C. MELVIN KIGHT
OAKLAND - C. Melvin Kight, 87, of LaPorte, Ind., formerly of Oakland, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at the Mountain View Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, LaPorte.
Born April 4, 1909, in Cross, W.Va., he was a son of the late William C. Kight and Sarah (Ours) Kight.

Mr. Kight owned and operated Kight's Dry Cleaners in Oakland for many years. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church; past president of the Oakland Rotary Club; Past Master of Oakland Lodge 192 AF & AM; member of Scottish Rite Bodies; member of Garrett Lodge 113 Knights of Pythias; and the first recipient of the Oakland Citizen of the Year Award.

Surviving are his wife, Helen (Umstot) Kight; one son, Jack M. Kight and wife Barb, LaPorte; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Durst Funeral Home, Oakland, on Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m.

A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Lawrence Sherwood and the Rev. Roger Harrison officiating.

Interment will be in Garrett County Memorial Gardens.

VIOLET JAMES
CUMBERLAND - Violet (McGill) James, 90, a resident of the Cumberland Nursing Home, formerly of Vocke Road, LaVale and Englewood, Fla., died Monday, Aug. 11, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 6, 1906, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Edward Glen and Elizabeth (Haines) McGill. She also was preceded in death by her husband Clive W. James, Midlothian and Englewood, Fla., in 1996; one sister, Pearl May (McGill) Glass; six brothers, Alvin S. McGill, Wallace H. McGill, Glen E. McGill, Donald B. McGill, Lester R. McGill and Page C. McGill; and one step daughter, Elizabeth "Betty" Preston.

She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Mrs. James was a 1924 graduate of Allegany High School. She was an office worker at the Kelly Springfield Tire Company, Cumberland, and in Atlanta, Ga., retiring in 1956, after 31 years of service. She was a member of the Assemblies of God, LaVale and Englewood, Fla.

Surviving are four nieces, Violet Boyd and Nancy Phillips, both of Cumberland, Helen Pietrinferno, Turnerville, N.J., and Patricia Paye, Kennewick, Wash.; three nephews, Kenneth Glass, Bonita, Calif, Allan McGill, Williamsport, and William McGill, LaVale; 22 great-nieces and nephews; several great-great-nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Laura McGill, LaVale, Joanne McGill, BelAir, and Ruth W. James, Midlothian; two step daughters, Mrs. Harvey McKenzie, Frostburg, and Mrs. Robert Mann, Cole Camp, Mo.; four step sons, Winston C. James, Grand Junction Colorado, Albert James, Rawlings, Samuel C. James, Aberdeen, and Roger D. James, Fall River, Mass.; 17 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Friends were received at the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Jimmie W. Blair officiating.

Interment will be in the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery, Cumberland.

Pallbearers will be Allan McGill, William McGill, Eugene McGill, Thomas McGill and Richard Phillips.
