CLAUDE E. MATHENY
LONACONING - Claude Ellsworth Matheny, 81, of 2 Pershing St., Lonaconing, died Wednesday, April 23, 1997, at the VA Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Oct. 27, 1915, at St. Mary's, W.Va., he was a son of the late David Lee and Nora Ellen (Logan) Matheny. He also was preceded in death by two sisters, Beula Davis and Della Davis, both of Parkersburg, W.Va.
Mr. Matheny was the retired owner and manager of ``Webers" Variety Store, Lonaconing for 35 years. He was the last original store owner in Lonaconing. He was of the Methodist faith. He visited St. James Episcopal Church, Westernport, and St. Peters Episcopal Church, Lonaconing. He was a veteran of World War II, serving four and one-half years in the U.S. Air Force as a Record Keeper Photographer at Randolph Air Base in San Antonio, Texas, and the 14th Squadron, Iceland.
Surviving are his wife, Alta Jane (Shreve) Buskirk Matheny; one stepson, Mark Richard Buskirk and wife Pam, Frostburg; two stepdaughters, Susan Colleen Gotti and husband Richard, Baltimore, and Jane Marie Ingrodi and husband Mark, Lonaconing; two step-grandchildren, Zachary Tyler Van-Buskirk, and Nicholas Lee Ingrodi; one brother, Ralph Lee Matheny, Parkersburg, W.Va.; and nine nieces.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Leslie Miles officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park, Frostburg.
GERALD E. MATTHEWS
KITZMILLER - Gerald Edward ``John Po" Matthews, 59, of Kitzmiller, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 1997, at his residence.
Born June 13, 1937, in Oakmont, W.Va., he was a son of the late Dewey L. and Melinda (Rhodes) Matthews.
Mr. Matthews was a retired coal miner, and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are his wife, Carol Ann (Elliott) Matthews; three daughters, Rebecca Matthews, Kitzmiller, Karen Kay Lucas, Kitzmiller, and Teresa Muir, Bloomington; one brother, Leland ``Nip" Matthews, Kitzmiller; five sisters, Sally Greaser, Elk Garden, W.Va., Marion Teets, Oakland, Yvonne Nicholas, Deer Park, Joann Paugh, Friendsville, and Deana Arnold, Sheridan, Ark.; and three grandchildren; Tiffany Matthews, Paige Lucas and Chelsie Muir.
The body is at the David A. Burdock Funeral Home, Kitzmiller, where friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral services will be held in the funeral home chapel on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Donald E. Marple officiating.
Interment will be in the Kalbaugh cemetery, Elk Garden.
JOSEPH L. MATTHEWS
ACCIDENT - Joseph L. Matthews, 85, of 103 North Main St., Accident, died Friday, Aug. 14, 1997, at Garrett County Memorial Hospital, Oakland.
Born Feb. 10, 1912, in Uniontown, Pa., he was a son of the late Joseph and Anna Matthews. He also was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche E. (Forsyth) Matthews, on Nov. 18, 1956.
Mr. Matthews was the owner of Matthews Food Store, which he purchased Oct. 18, 1945. The store has been in continuous operation as a grocery store for 157 years. He graduated from the National Radio Institute, Chicago, in 1953, and served on the Accident Town Council and Municipal Planning Commission. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Matthews is survived by a daughter, Nancy Lee Mann, Glen Rock, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Ted Marra, Accident; a nephew, Ted Marra and wife Samantha, Middleton, Mass.; a great-nephew, Steve Marra; and two great-nieces, Courtney and Ashley Marra.
Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Home, McHenry, on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Roland E. Nairn III officiating.
Interment will be in Blooming Rose cemetery, Friendsville.

RAYMOND P. MATTHEWS
MIDLAND - Raymond P. "Smitty" Matthews, 67, of Back Street, Midland, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born July 25, 1930, in Nikep, he was a son of the late Edward P. Matthews and Hazel M. (Smith) Matthews.
Mr. Matthews was retired from Local No. 616 Laborers Union, Cumberland, and Scotty's Restaurant, Midland. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, Lonaconing, and a former member of the Midland Volunteer Fire Company.
Surviving are his wife, Judith Ann (Hyde) Matthews; three sons, Terry Matthews, Keyser, W.Va., Jeffrey Allen Matthews and wife Bonnie, Cumberland, and Christopher Lee Matthews, at home; one daughter, Anastasia Marie Matthews, at home; one brother, David Matthews, Westernport; and three sisters, Ruth Ann Wilson, Lonaconing, Dorothy McKenzie, Frostburg, and Shirley Bacey, Keyser, W.Va.; three grandchldren, Jeffrey Allen Jr., Bonnie Jean, and Rodney Joseph; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Lawrence Frye and the Rev. William Hunt officiating.
Interment will be in Mountain View cemetery, Moscow Mills.
AGNES MATTINGLY
MIDLAND - Agnes Mattingly, of St. Claire Shores, Mich., formerly of Midland, died on Monday, April 28, 1997, at her residence.
Born at Midland, she was a daughter of the late Patrick and Catherine (Coleman) O'Brien.
Surviving are one brother, Daniel O'Brien, Midland; and one sister, Edna Custer, Phoenix, Ariz.
The body was cremated.
MARY L. WILSON
CUMBERLAND - Mary Lillian Wilson, 95, formerly of 824 Camden Ave., Cumberland, died Friday, Aug. 22, 1997, at Lions Manor Nursing Home.
Born Sept. 20, 1901, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Paul H. and Bertha V. (Goodwin) Ritter. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel A. Wilson, in 1982; and a sister, Dorothy Twigg.
Mrs. Wilson attended Allegany County schools and graduated from Tri-State Business College. She served as secretary in the administrations of Governors O'Conor, Lane, McKeldin and Tawes. During the O'Conor campaign, she served as the first national committee woman of the Young Democrats of Maryland.
Thereafter, she served as a member of the National Committee of Young Democrats. She was elected as chairman of the United Democratic Women's Clubs of Maryland Inc., in 1959. In 1960, she was named as a delegate to the convention nominating John F. Kennedy as president.
She had served on many committees both state and national and, at the time of her death, she was a member of the executive board of the United Democratic Women's Clubs of Maryland Inc., Daughters of the Nile No. 118, the American Red Cross, and History House, as well as being a member of many political clubs in Baltimore City and Cumberland. She was a member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Brookfield Avenue, Cumberland, as well as a former member of the Church of the Nativity, Baltimore.
Surviving are a brother, Paul H. Ritter, Wingate; a niece with whom she resided, Dorothy Dorn, Cumberland; and a nephew, David Twigg, King George, Va.
Mrs. Wilson requested that she be cremated at the Cumberland Crematory, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family requests memorial donations to the Holy Cross Episcopal Church, 610 Brookfield Ave., Cumberland MD 21502.
The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of the arrangements.
DORIS E. MAY
CUMBERLAND - Doris Eileen (Koelker) May, 74, of 717 Princeton St., died Tuesday, April 8, 1997, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.
Born July 26, 1922, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Joseph H. and Ada M. (Layman) Koelker. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey W. May Sr.; one son, Richard S. May; two sisters, Marie McGlinchey and Imagene Smiley; and one brother, Charles A. Koelker.
Mrs. May was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was a member of Melvin United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Harvey W. May Jr., and his wife Anne, Cumberland; two granddaughters, Stephanie May Shafer, Manassas, Va., and Suzanne E. May, Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Lou Whitford, Hagerstown, and Sandra Crosten and husband Charles, Corriganville; and two brothers, Robert W. Koelker and wife Mary, Cumberland, and Joseph Koelker, Cumberland.
Friends will be received at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Merritt-Adams Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Leslie officiating.
Interment will be in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be members of Melvin United Methodist Church, Herbert May, Larry Smith, John Alderton, John McFarland, Earl Wilson, and Gene Streett.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Melvin United Methodist Church.
