GRACE D. STANTON
CUMBERLAND - Grace Delia Stanton, 96, of 473 Goethe St., Cumberland, died Saturday, March 29, 1997, at Memorial Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1900, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late James Woodard Peters and the late Annie Mae (Frost) Peters. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Alma June Cramer.
Mrs. Stanton was a member of the United Transportation Union Auxiliary. She attended St. John's United Church of Christ, Grantsville.
Surviving are her husband, Markle Stanton; one grandson, James Edward Cramer, Lucasville, Ohio; one granddaughter, Beverly Ann Bolden, Eckhart; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at a later date.
The Merritt-Adams Funeral Home, 404 Decatur St., Cumberland, is in charge of arrangeents.
MILDRED L. STAPLETON
PINTO - Mildred L. Stapleton, 79, of Pinto, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born Dec. 16, 1917, in Herrin, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Mabel L. (Trotter) Wade. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence A. Stapleton, in 1979.
Mrs. Stapleton was retired from the Social Security Department in Kansas City, Mo. She moved to Cumberland in 1983. She was a member of Cresaptown United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Mikal T. Stapleton, Cumberland; one sister, Mercedeth Wilson, Clearwater, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Aimee Lynch, Angier, N.C., Erin Stapleton, Cary, N.C., Ryan Stapleton and Patrick Stapleton, both of Apex, N.C.
The Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home, Herrin, is in charge of the arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.
Local arrangements were handled by Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland.
GEORGE B. STAUP
BARTON - George B. "Husky" Staup, 83, of Walnut Hill Road, Barton, died March 26, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Born March 9, 1914, in Lonaconing, he was the son of the late James Staup and Grace (Waddell) Staup. He also was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Leslie, and Galen; and four sisters, Gladys Burkett, Anna Johnson, Edith Wiebrecht, and Edna Cameron.
Mr. Staup was a former employee at Allegany Ballistics. He also worked at Waddell Mines, tended bar for Goodwill Fire Co., and worked in the Sheriff's Office of Allegany County for 23 years, retiring March, 1978 as a captain. He enjoyed hunting, Beagles, and gardening. He was a member of Goodwill Fire Co., Lonaconing; George's Creek Valley 161 AF&AM; Masonic Lodge, Lonaconing; Loyal Order of Moose 348, Frostburg; Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 245, Cumberland; United Commercial Travelers 179, Cumberland; and the Senior Citizens of Barton. He was Methodist by faith.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Eva M. (Clark) Staup; one son, George Lewis Staup and wife JoAnn, Hagerstown; one daughter, Jo Ann M. McCabe and husband Raymond, Hagerstown; one granddaughter, Debbie McCabe, Hagerstown; one grandson, George L. Staup II, Hagerstown; one stepgranddaughter, Lisa Weaver and husband Robert, Hagerstown; one stepgreat-granddaughter, Tiffany Weaver, Hagerstown; two sisters, Margeret "Peg" Vinci, Nikep, and Betty Robeson and husband Albert, Westminster; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law William Wiebrecht, Frostburg; and sister-in-law, Helen Staup, Nikep.
Friends will be received at the Eichhorn-McKenzie Funeral Home, Lonaconing, Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be at the funeral home Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. John S. Park officiatng.
Interment will be in Laurel Hill cemetery, Moscow Mills.
The family requests that memorials be directed to Westernport Rescue Squad, or Barton United Methodist Church.
Goodwill Fire Co. will hold a memorial service at the funeral home Friday at 7 p.m.
George's Creek Valley 161 AF&AM; will hold a memorial service at the funeral home Friday at 7:30 p.m.
CLARA M. STEELE
CRESAPTOWN - Clara Mae Steele, 81, of Brant Road, Cresaptown, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland.
Born March 22, 1916, in Gilmore, she was the daughter of the late John and Maude (Winters) Leake. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Steele, 1963; two brothers, Sidney and Bob Leake; and one sister, Bertha Steele.
Mrs. Steele was a homemaker for 20 years on a farm at Dans Mountain. Her five children were born and raised there. She later worked at Sacred Heart Hospital and several nursing homes.
Surviving are one son, Joseph Steele and wife Mary, Coraopolis, Pa.; four daughters, Esther Wilson, Accident, Edna Llewellyn and husband Sam, Gilmore, Edith Llewellyn and husband Bob, Swanton, June Clark and recently deceased husband Bob, Cresaptown; one brother, John Leake and wife Mabel, Knapps Meadow, Lonaconing; four sisters, Grace Powers, Knapps Meadow, Lonaconing, Maude Wilson, Midland, Ruth Wattenschaidt, Water Station Run, Lonaconing, and Marie Lauder and husband Allen, Baltimore; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, Cresaptown, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Jeff Anderson officiating.
At Mrs. Steele's request, she will be cremated.
Interment will be at a later date in Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland.
The family requests expressions of sympathy may be made to Sacred Heart Hospital.
PAUL L. STEELE
LINCOLN PARK, Mich. - Paul L. Steele, 93, of Lincoln Park, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997.
Born in Frostburg, Md., he was the son of the late John and Hannah (Evans) Steele.
He was the loving father of Carol Steele and Donna Harp and husband Gerald.
Services will be at the Weise Funeral Home, 7210 Park Ave., Allen Park, on Monday at 12:30 p.m.
Interment will be in Michigan Memorial Park, Flat Rock.
RAYMOND R. STEELE
FROSTBURG - Raymond R. "Pete" Steele, 77, of Frostburg, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Frostburg Village Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since August 1991.
Born May 1, 1919, in Zihlman, he was the son of the late Annie M. Steele and Francis Kirby. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Goldie (Troutman) Steele on Sept. 9, 1975, and his second wife, Mildred (Kyle) Steele on Oct. 6, 1991.
As a young man, Mr. Steele was employed at the Ship Yards in Baltimore; then at Kaiser Refractories, Zihlman; and by Abbie Feldstein, LaVale. He attended Zihlman United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his son, Dennis A. Steele of Millville, Pa.; and a very close cousin, Doris Pressman, Frostburg; and a number of other cousins.
Friends will be received at the Sowers Funeral Home, Frostburg, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. George A. Aist officiating.
Interment will be in Frostburg Memorial Park.
VIOLET MAY STEELE
RAWLINGS - Violet May (Smith) Steele, 89, formerly of Rawlings, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, in Union Bridge, Md.
She was born on Aug. 20, 1908, in Mount Savage, the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Jennie Myrtle (Norris) Smith.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Henry Steele, on Nov. 27, 1996; a grandson, John Taylor Guthrie; and a brother, John Smith.
Mrs. Steele was a member of the Keyser Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a housewife.
She is survived by a son, William Melvin Steele and wife, Darla, Union Bridge; a daughter, Viola Guthrie, Rawlings; two sisters, Annabelle Gordon, Barrelville, and Mary Weaver, Seattle, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received in the Hafer Chapel of the Hills Mortuary, 1302 National Highway, LaVale, on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Services will be conducted on Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with President Archie W. Self, Jr., officiating.
Interment will follow in Rest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Pall bearers will be great-grandsons, William M. Steele III, Christopher Steele, Corey McKinney, Robert W. Knisley, Jerry E. Snyder, Brian E. Guthrie, Adam Braithwaite, and John F. Van Meter.
