DR. RICHARD J. WILLIAMS
CUMBERLAND - Dr. Richard Jones Williams, 90, of Cumberland, died Friday, Sept. 5, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Dr. Richard Jones Williams was born July 18, 1907, in South Cumberland. His parents were the late William F. and Jennie Linn Williams.

He attended the old Virginia Avenue Elementary School, Pennsylvania Avenue Junior High School, and graduated from the old Allegany County High School on Greene Street. He attended Potomac State School in 1925, now called Potomac State College. He graduated from the University of Alabama College of Arts and Sciences with a bachelor of arts degree. He later did post graduate work at this institution in organic chemistry in 1933. After this, for a period of time, Dr. Williams worked on the ready track of the B&O; Railroad helping prepare steam engines for their runs. He later attended and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1937 and interned at the old Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore.

Dr. Williams believed that a student really only paid for a small part of education received and that the people, the taxpayers, picked up the greater part of the tab. For this reason, in case the people ever needed him, he applied for and received a commission as Lt. j.g. in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps Reserve.

He practiced medicine for a short time in South Cumberland. Immediately prior to the declaration by the president of a national emergency, Dr. Williams requested active duty. He was ordered to the Norfolk Naval Hospital for indoctrination and was subsequently sent as division medical officer to the 21st Destroyer Division on Neutrality Patrol in the Atlantic. Following a tour of duty, he was ordered to the Washington Naval Hospital and from there was sent to join the then forming Amphibious Forces at Norfolk. These forces trained at Solomon's Island and, immediately after Pearl Harbor, got under way for the South Pacific and Wellington, New Zealand. From there, with the elements of the First and Fifth Marine Divisions, they launched the first U.S. offensive of World War II which was at Guadalcanal, a small island in the Solomon's chain.

Dr. Williams saw a lot of combat service and, at the end of World War II, returned to reserve status. He did post graduate work in cardiology at Ohio State University and returned to Cumberland to practice medicine in the downtown medical building. When the Korean War broke, the then Captain Williams was ordered back to active duty and served as senior medical officer aboard Admiral Solomon's flag ship destroyers, Atlantic Fleet.

He finally returned again to Cumberland and resumed his duties at the Naval Armory on McKaig's Hill as medical officer and reopened his private practice in the downtown medical building. There he worked until he retired on April 1, 1982.

Dr. Williams was on the staff of Memorial and Sacred Heart Hospitals. He was a member of the Allegany County Medical Society, the Medical and Chirugical Faculty of Maryland, and the American Medical Association. He was a Fellow of the American College of Angiology, a Fellow of the Scientific Council of the International College of Angiology, and an Associate Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Williams was a member of East Gate Lodge AF&AM;, the Scottish Rite, a charter member of Tall Cedars, Ali Ghan Shrine, and past director of the Royal Order of Jesters. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and an honorary member of the Masonic Club of Auckland, New Zealand, and the Masonic Club at Brisbane, Australia.

Dr. Williams was preceded in death by his first wife, Erna Cole Williams; a daughter, Ann Williams Hall; and his five siblings.
