Staten, Lawrence

I will lift mine eyes unto the hills from whence cometh my help, my help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth." Psalm 121: 1-2

Lawrence Staten was born to the late Ralph Staten and Betty Staten Mosley on December 8, 1945 in Baltimore, Maryland. At an early age Lawrence moved with his family to Virginia but retuned to Baltimore.

Lawrence was educated in the Virginia and Baltimore County Public Schools. He spent all of his life working to provide for his family at Airco Welding Products for 26 years and Baltimore County Government for over 20 years. Lawrence retired six years ago and truly enjoyed this new life.

Lawrence married the joy of his life, Yvonne Mercer-Staten, and from this union they had one son, the pride of his life, Lawrence Ashley Staten.

Lawrence gave his life to the Lord Jesus and was baptized at an early age. He would tell anyone who would listen, laughing hysterically, how his mother made him go to church every Sunday, all day long, from early in the morning to late at night. He would say as a child, "When I grow up I am never going to church again." Well, for all who knew him, the church of Jesus Christ was his life. He loved to usher, sing, pray, testify and encourage everyone. He joined the male choir and prayer ministry in every church God planted him. He was determined and was consecrated three months ago to serve as a communion steward. Lawrence was a "Man of God" whose legacy will be remembered in the wisdom and reflection of life as one who always shared the love of Christ through his love, passion, and care for others. Devoted to his wife and son, he set a high standard in being a husband to his wife and father to his son, and everyone knew that he loved his family and his God. Always on the battlefield for the Lord, Lawrence would pray without ceasing, never missed an opportunity to testify about the goodness of the Lord, and lived his life as an example of one who walked closely with Jesus.

Lawrence Staten departed this life suddenly but fully armored and prepared to meet Jesus on Thursday, March 14, 2013.

He leaves to celebrate his life and legacy his devoted wife, Rev. Dr. Yvonne Mercer-Staten; son, Lawrence Ashley Staten; mother, Betty Staten Mosley, Va.; sisters, Rachel (Clayborne) Staten), Va., Rita Bullock, Va., Brenda Mallory, Va., Sherbeth (Emmanuel), Va.; brothers, Clyde (Arlene) Staten, Va.; Rev. Phillip Staten, Va.; Oliver Staten, Va.; sisters-in law Carolyn David, Deanna (Dennis) Burwell; brother-in law Charles (Karen) Mercer, Baltimore, Md.; a host of nieces and nephews; devoted friends including Ann Williams, Jennie Elliott, Lucius Ross, Jr., Rev. Loretta Johnson, and other loved ones he affectionately called "Kinfolk;" every usher at St. Matthew UMC and Eastern UMC, the Band and all of his brothers and sisters in Christ who walked faithfully with him at Rocky Branch, St. Matthew UMC, Eastern UMC, Asbury UMC, Union UMC and Simpson-Hamline UMC.

He will always and forever be remembered as a servant of God, loyal to his faith, faithful to his friends, a dedicated and devoted husband and a hero to his son.

To God Be the Glory!

Leeth, Alma Christie

ALMA CHRISTIE LEETH, was born Alma Vivian Christie, on January 27, 1925 in Havre de Grace, MD. She was the second oldest child of Lloyd and Grace Buchannan Christie. She passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, MD.

A graduate of Havre de Grace Colored High School in 1944, Alma continued her studies, attending college at Hampton Institute in Virginia, now known as Hampton University. She graduated in 1949 majoring in art and music. She became an eighth grade art teacher at Phoenix School in Hampton, VA. Phoenix was an experimental school that served a dual purpose: educating local children and the Hampton University child psychology and education majors.

Home on break, in the late summer of 1952, Alma met her future husband Flozell Leeth at a dance at the NCO Club on Aberdeen Proving Ground. Theirs was a whirlwind romance, after four months of dating they were married just before the New Year on December 30, 1952. Shortly after their marriage Flozell was sent to fight in the Korean War. While he was away at war, their first daughter was born; their union yielded six more children. Alma loved to travel and over the years Flozell's Army career took their family to Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Germany. After his retirement, the Leeths settled in Maryland, first in Havre de Grace and finally in Perryman.

Alma was a wife, mother, homemaker, social worker, art and music enthusiast, education advocate and activist; in short, she was a renaissance woman. She loved the arts especially opera which she attended regularly with granddaughter Jasmine's father, Thomas Cox. She drew beautiful still life water colors; adored photography, collecting many Life magazine coffee table books; and was an avid reader, preferring mysteries. She was fascinated by the world, collecting National Geographic magazines. She regularly watched a variety of PBS programs, and was especially fond of British comedies. She was also known for staying up late and watching horror movies, claiming they weren't scary.

A lifelong learner, Alma's passion for educating herself did not slow down with age; she completed independent courses through The Modern Scholar such as biology, astronomy, and the history of the Tudors. She even learned how to use the computer at 85 years old! One of the first things she did with her newfound knowledge was Google Leontyne Price's White House performances.

A fierce civil rights activist, Alma never allowed anyone to disrespect her or her family. Her daughter, Dolores, recounted how in the 10th grade her sister, Gloria, was in class and witnessed her teacher throw an eraser at a black boy. The eraser smacked him in the mouth leaving a white cloud of chalk around his lips. The teacher told him the powder made his lips look like the lips of his people in Africa. Gloria told her mother, who called the principal demanding an apology or else she was going to contact the school board and press charges; an apology was swiftly made. Dolores also remembered her mother telling the story of how, during the 60s when Joppatowne was formed, the community did not want to include black people. Alma participated in the protests that eventually led to blacks being allowed to live there. She was also part of a "Dialogue" group: liberal blacks and whites who came together to find a way of effectively communicating and working together covering topics from the effects of race to what politicians to endorse. In the words of grandson Asa, Alma, affectionately known to her grandchildren as Mom-Mom, was "…a strong woman who lived in a society that didn't accept strong women. She was a true freedom fighter."

Alma leaves to cherish her memory; daughters, Dolores Jefferson, Abingdon, MD; Gloria and husband Warren Nelson, Houston, TX; Evelyn and husband Harry El, Edgewood, MD; and Patricia Leeth, Havre de Grace, MD; sons, Edward Leeth and wife Amalia, Clinton, MD; David Leeth, Aberdeen, MD; and Michael Leeth and partner Joe Hildebrand, Phoenix, AZ; adopted son, Thomas Cox; brother, Leonard Christie, 13 grandchildren, four great granddaughters, three great grandsons and her cat Remi.

She was predeceased by her husband Flozell, brother Michael Christie, and sister Gloria Christie Compton.

A memorial service will be held 11am Monday March 25, 2013 at St. Joan of Arc Church, 222 S. Law Street,Aberdeen, MD. Interment will be in Berkely Cemetery, Castleton Road, Darlington, Maryland prior to the service on Monday at 9:30am.
