JUANITA HOLSTON LAGANA

Juanita (Nita) Holston Lagana, age 52 of East New Market, MD died at home Friday afternoon, January 30, 2004.

Born on June 13, 1951 in Severna Park, MD, she was the daughter and step-daughter of Olive Nevin Miller and Harold Wesley Miller of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She was also the daughter of the late William Holston.

Nita was an avid gardener and animal lover.

Surviving besides her mother and step-father is a daughter Faith Lagana of Pasadena, MD, three brothers Charles Cassell and his wife Beverly of Davie, FL, John Cassell of Miama, Oklahoma, Robert Cassell and his wife Francoise of Peoria, Arizona, Gene Holston of East New Market, MD with whom she resided, a sister-in-law Peggy Holston of Arnold, MD, aunts, uncles, several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding her in death besides her father was a sister-in-law Georgene Cassell.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Antioch the Apostolic Church, 1535 Ritchie Highway, Arnold, MD 21012. Inurnment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Nita's memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733.

Arrangements are being handled by Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A., Cambridge.

Jackson, Cyril F.

Cyril F. Jackson, of Savannah, Georgia, passed away on Thursday March 22, 2001. He was 57. He was born in Cambridge on February 16, 1944 and was the son of the late Cyril Franklin and Stella Era Jackson.

He had attended schools in Cambridge. On July 23, 1966 he and the former Violet Cornelia Smith were married. He had been a member of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M. since October 17, 1988. Some years ago he had worked as pressman at Western Publishing Co. in Cambridge. Mr. Jackson had worked as a truck driver for most of his life. In 1975 he started working for Preston Trucking, and later worked for Crown Cork & Seal. In 1993 he moved to Savannah, where he worked for several local trucking companies. In 1995 he went to work for McKenzie Tank Lines as an over the road driver. He had retired in 1995. Since he had retired he had worked with his son on the water. He was stricken suddenly on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Jackson is survived by his wife, Violet S. Jackson of Savannah, GA, two daughters: Natalie M. Dawson of Robbins, Kimberly Jackson Holliday of Cambridge, one son, Darren A. Jackson and his wife, Dee Jackson of Savannah, three grandchildren, Nikki Dawson of Robbins, Jacob Jackson and Jody Jackson, both of Savannah, two sisters, Mary E. Moore and Louise H. Maguire, both of Cambridge, two brothers, William J. Jackson of Colorado Springs, CO and Phillip G. Jackson of Pompano Beach, FL and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas H. Jackson, and a foster mother, Geraldine Mowbray.

A Funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Doug Wooten and the Rev. D.J. Wooten officiating. Members of Cambridge Lodge No. 66 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a Memorial Service prior to the Funeral Service. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard.

The family will receive friends during the hour before the service.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Marvin Parks, Glenwood Todd, Jr., Richard Moore, Jr., Joseph Moore and Jerol Don Moore, Jr. Active Pallbearers will be Allen H. Smith, John Pyle, Richard Moore, Sr., Dr. Tim Carpenter, Terry Groves and Larry Bennett.

Jackson, Martha V.

MARTHA VIRGINIA JACKSON, beloved daughter of the late Hallie Jackson (mother) and Laure Jackson (father) was born in Harford County on February 13, 1912. Martha departed this life on Sunday, April 15, 2007 very peacefully at Harford Memorial Hospital, Havre de Grace, Maryland with her cousin (Lucky) at her bedside.

Martha received her early education at the Bel Air Colored School in Harford, County Maryland. Martha also known as "Tiny" began her Christian education as a young child attending Sunday School at AMES UMC in Bel Air, Maryland. Martha also attended the First Baptist Church on Alice Ann Street known today as New Hope Baptist Church.

Martha never married or had children but shared many years with her devoted friend James Emmanuel Maxfield also known as (Joe Ghost). Martha was predeceased by (Joe Ghost) who past away in October of 1983.

Martha, for many years took care of many generations of the family children. She was the unofficial godmother of too many to count. Tiny was a homemaker for many decades and had true passion for taking care of children and wanting to help others.

Martha was famous for giving out money, candy or sodas to all who were exposed to her. She was avid in her pursuit in helping others and bringing a smile to all children's faces. Her kindnesses extended into the children who have now become adults. (WE LOVE YOU COUSIN MARTHA)

Martha leaves to mourn her loss; three first cousins, Virginia Dorsey, Barbara Jean Taylor, Robert Clinton Taylor and many, many second, third and fourth cousins who have been a part of her life; and a special friend Walter Hunter.

She was also preceded in death by a very special friend Mabel Hunter.

Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday April 21, 2006 at New Hope Baptist Church, 116 Alice Ann Street, Bel Air, MD where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery, Churchville, MD.

Dodson, James E. "Peaches"

James E. "Peaches" Dodson, 82, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Cambridge on February 19, 1928 and was a son of the John F. and Willie Blanche Bell Dodson.

Mr. Dodson graduated from Cambridge High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and received the World War II Victory Medal. On November 6, 1993 he married the former Constance Stack. Mr. Dodson worked and retired from Cambridge Wire Cloth. He enjoyed bowling and golf. Mr. Dodson was a member of the American Legion Post 91.

He is survived by his wife Connie Dodson of Cambridge, three daughters Barbara Daniels of North Carolina, Kathy Graham of South Carolina and Vera Insley of Arizona, several grandchildren and great- grandchildren, three brothers Gilbert Dodson of Cambridge, Glenwood Dodson of Salisbury and Freddie Dodson of Horntown, VA, two sisters Gloria Whitby of Easton and Dawn Holland of Easton and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Dodson is preceded in death by his first wife Doris Dodson, two sisters Louise Johnson and Francis Richardson.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 31, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock with Rev. J. Edward King officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Parks, Carroll "Sonny"

Carroll "Sonny" Parks, 78, of Cambridge passed away on January 25, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 19, 1932 in Cambridge and was the son of the late Thomas O. Neal and Ruby L. Parks Furbush.

He served in the U.S. Army from February of 1953 to February of 1955. For 55 years he was a well known brickmason and had worked for several local contractors. He was a very kind man, a hard worker and a devoted father. He enjoyed sitting at Long Wharf, spending time with his friends, of which he had many and sharing stories of his life.

He is survived by a daughter Amy Lynn Willey, grandchildren Erica Lynn Parks and Ricky Carroll Willey, an aunt Doris Jackson, cousins and dear friends Cecil and Rose Parks, Ricky and Jackie Parks and several other cousins. Besides his parents Mr. Parks is preceded in death by his grandparents Ruby W. Parks and Peter C. Parks and Margaret Outerbridge H. Neal, two aunts Ruth Rossell and Evelyn Parks Dickerson.

At the request of Sonny, there will not be any formal service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Jackson, Sheila C.

Sheila C. Jackson, daughter of the late George F. and Mary E. Shackelford, was born on March 15, 1950 in Baltimore, MD. She departed this life on June 22, 2001, after a lengthy illness.

She attended public schools in Baltimore, MD. In 1968, she graduated from Edmondson High School with honors. Another milestone was when she graduated from Morgan State University with honors and obtained a degree in Chemistry in 1972. The occasion was the same commencement date for her husband, Dr. Howlett Jackson.

After college, she worked in her field of Chemistry for companies such as 3M, Allied Chemicals, and Hercules Corporation until the time of her illness.

She married Dr. Howlett Jackson and from this union one son was born, Howlett Jackson, Jr. Her daughter, Sabrina Carter, was born prior to this union.

Sheila was extremely active in civic and community activities. She was a life member of the Harford County National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Her various positions with the organization were, Education Chairperson, Member of Executive and Program Committees and sometimes Assistant Secretary. Another Civic involvement was as a member of the Harford County Small Business Resources Center. In addition, she was involved with Harford county Meditation Program, a volunteer for the Harford County Human Relations Office and a Member of the Superintendent of Harford County Schools Ad Hoc Committee.

During most of her life, she was a regular member of Douglas Memorial Church in Baltimore, MD. As a local resident, she and her family frequently attended Helping Hands Ministries in Harford County.

Sheila was an interior decorator who enjoyed arts and crafts. She especially liked to create her artistic and unique flower arrangements.

She had numerous lifelong friends from all over the United States. Her friends looked forward to tasting the delicious rolls she often baked. She also became known as the local 'bargain expert' who always had an eye to spot and purchase a good 'deal'.

She was extremely family oriented and cherished quality time with her husband, daughter, son, grandchildren, and other relatives. All who knew her will miss her great personality and beautiful smile.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Howlett Jackson of Havre de Grace, MD; two children, Sabrina Carter of Baltimore, MD, and Howlett Jackson, Jr. of Havre de Grace, MD; three sisters, Darnell Harper, Denise Shackelford, and Cassandra Shackelford; one brother, Howard Shackelford; five step sisters, Brenda Carney, Joan Swann, Mary Jane Surrette, Barbara Jean Shackelford, and Cheryl Strickland; two step brothers, George F. Shackelford Jr., and Ralph Shackelford; two grandchildren, Tyson Lin and Morgan Randall. She also leaves to cherish her memory many sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws, as well as a host of friends.

Service will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday June 29, 2001 at Helping Hands Ministries, 3237 Level Road, Churchville, MD where friends may call one hour prior. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Havre de Grace, MD.
