Warfield, Sr., William Leroy

Army

William Leroy Warfield, Sr., 86, of Cambridge passed away on Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. He was born in Cambridge on June 11, 1924 and was a son of the late Norman and Leona Hubbard Warfield.

He attended schools in Dorchester County. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II. After the service, he drove a charter bus and a school bus. Later, he hauled newspapers from Baltimore to Cambridge. On September 19, 1950 he was married the former Elizabeth Hubbard. She passed away on July 9, 2006. Mr. Warfield was an avid NASCAR fan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 91and Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW.

He is survived by a son Robert Lee Warfield and companion Betty Darling of Cambridge, grandchildren William S. Warfield of Cambridge and Kathy L. Warfield of Delaware, three brothers Paul Warfield, Alvin Warfield and George Raymond Warfield, two sisters Margaret Warfield and Rachel Cannon and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Mr. Warfield is preceded in death by a son William L. Warfield Jr., a brother William Delmas Warfield and two sisters Blanche Sanger and Loretta Elzey.

Pallbearers will be Calvert Warfield, Alvin Warfield, Paul Warfield, Raymond Warfield, Eugene Martinetti and Edwin Robbins.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Pam Bockart officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veteran's Cemetery near Hurlock. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.

Sanchez, M.D., Fernando A.

Fernando Arturo Sanchez, M.D., 74 passed away at his home in Cambridge on Saturday, October 30, 2010. He was born in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic on August 30, 1936, and was a son of the late Manuel Emilio Sanchez, M.D. and Rosa Felicia Perez Sanchez.

He attended schools in the Dominican Republic and graduated from Medical School at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo. On February 19, 1964, he married the former Maritza Ruiz. They have made their home in Cambridge since 2002. He worked at the Department of Human Services in Washington DC and also at the DC General Hospital where he worked in the Pathology Department until he retired in 2000. Dr. Sanchez was a handyman, and enjoyed doing work around the house. He also enjoyed boating and fishing in the Choptank River.

Survivors include his wife Maritza R. Sanchez, one son Prosper E. Sanchez, D.O. of Cambridge, one daughter Zulma Sanchez of Washington, DC, a sister Maria, and brothers Juan, Frank and Manuel. He was preceded in death by a son Fernando Arturo Sanchez, Jr. and a sister Rosa Emilia Tavares.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Refuge of Sinners Catholic Church in Cambridge with the Celebrant William Lawler officiating. Interment will follow at Old Trinity Churchyard. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 5:00 PM.

Marshall, Phyllis T.

Phyllis T. Marshall, 80, of Cambridge passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center. She was born in Cambridge on January 16, 1930 and was a daughter of the late George W. and Lorena Tregoe Taylor.

Mrs. Marshall attended schools in Cambridge. On August 9, 1963 she was married to Levin M. Marshall. She had worked as a hairdresser and had operated her own beauty shop in Cambridge for a number of years. She was a member of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Cambridge. Mrs. Marshall enjoyed fishing, traveling and gardening.

She is survived by her husband Levin M. Marshall of Cambridge, a daughter Deborah L. Newman of Holiston, Mass, four sons Herbert L. Dozier III of Flagstaff, AZ, Ricky Dozier of Chicago, Ill, Daniel A. Dozier of Chesapeake, VA and Kevin M. Marshall of Cambridge, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother Leroy Taylor of Pocomoke and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Marshall is preceded in death by a son Randy Dozier, five sisters Beulah Willey, Sarah Rumbley, Helen Cox, Alice Smith and Mildred Peterson, two brothers Fleetwood Taylor and Emerson Taylor.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock with Rev. Paul Dorman officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dorchester County Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to the Pleasant Day Adult Day Care, 2474 Cambridge Beltway, Cambridge, MD 21613. Arrangements are in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Wingate, Estelle M.

Estelle M. Wingate, 79 of Cambridge, passed away at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore on Friday September 3, 2010. She was born at Cordova on June 26, 1931 and was a daughter of the late William J. and Mary Florence Gay Sedgwick.

She attended schools in Cordova. On September 13, 1955 she was married to Raymond S. Wingate, Sr. Mr. Wingate passed away on July 20, 1985. Some years ago she had worked at Leonard Simmons Cannery. She later worked at Bumble Bee Tuna for 30 years and had also worked at Perdue Farms. Later in life she worked as a sitter for a number of people. Mrs. Wingate had attended the Church of the Nazarene in Cambridge for many years. She was stricken suddenly on Thursday morning and was taken to University Hospital in Baltimore where she passed away on Friday afternoon.

Survivors include two sons Raymond S. Wingate, Jr. and his wife Sandy Wingate of Cambridge, and William J. "Billy" Wingate and his wife Shawn Wingate of Cambridge, two granddaughters Candy Hurst of Seaford, Amy Davis of Cambridge three grandsons L. Barrett Wingate, Jr. of Trappe, Jonathan L. Wingate of Trappe and Chris Frantum of Cambridge, three great grandchildren Michael Frantum, Detrick Frantum and Raven Bryan all of Cambridge. She is also survived by several brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son L. Barrett Wingate, Sr. and several brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends during the hour preceding the service. Memorial contributions in Mrs. Wingate's name may be made to the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A., 700 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613. Pallbearers will be James Clauso, Christopher Frantum, Tommy Robbins, Kenny Dean, Jason Dean and Michael Hurst.

Slacum, Anna Mae

Anna Mae Slacum, 88 of Easton, formerly of Cambridge, passed away on Good Friday, April 2, 2010 at The Memorial Hospital at Easton. She was born in Cambridge on March 3, 1922, and was a daughter of the late James Albert Slacum, Sr. and the late Iolia Stephens Slacum.

She attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1939. She later attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, Virginia from 1940 until 1943. She later graduated from the University Of Maryland Hospital School Of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1947 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Maryland in 1948. Miss Slacum had worked as a staff nurse at University Hospital as well as the Memorial Hospital at Easton, Cambridge Maryland Hospital and Dorchester General Hospital until she retired in 1996. Miss Slacum later worked for Home Helpers and the Cambridge Senior Center. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Cambridge as well as the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the University of Maryland School of Nursing Alumni Association, A.A.R.P. and a former member of the Women's Eastern Shore Society.

Survivors include a sister in law Iris M. Slacum of Cambridge, 2 nephews Lyn B. Slacum of South Carolina and James H. Slacum of Hurlock. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Eleanor L. Slacum and four brothers James A. Slacum, Jr. Paul L. Slacum, Albert B. Slacum and Lake R. Slacum, one niece Sandra Lee Spears and one nephew, Lake R. Slacum, Jr..

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Fred Bahr officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. Scott Daniels, 205 Maryland Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Cambridge Rotary Sandra Lee Spears Fund, c/o Mr. Randy Bradford, 103 Belvedere Avenue, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Atkinson, Albert B.

Marines

Albert B. Atkinson, 88 of Cambridge, passed away at his home on Tuesday March 16, 2010. He was born at Port Deposit on January 23, 1922 and was a son of the late Arthur and Reba Williams Atkinson.

He moved to Cambridge in 1930, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1938. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education from Salisbury State Teacher's College in 1942, and immediately entered the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduation and served continuously for 22 years, retiring in 1964 as Lieutenant Colonel. During his career in the Marine Corps he served in the Pacific in World War II, in the Korean War in 1951, as Associate Professor of Naval Sciences at the University of Virginia for three years, as officer in charge of Marine Corps recruiting in Chicago for three years, and in various positions of staff and command with the First, Second and Third Marine Divisions. On October 18, 1944 he was married to the former Annette Robbins. Upon retirement from the military, he returned to Cambridge and in 1965 established the Office of Dorchester Community Development Corporation, the local anti-poverty agency. In 1967 he was promoted to Eastern Shore Representative for the Maryland Office of Economic Opportunity where he served as Human Services Specialist until he retired in 1982. In 1976 he was elected as Mayor of the City of Cambridge serving in this office until 1980. While serving as mayor he was instrumental in having the Cambridge Police Department facility built on Academy Street; secured state funding for the Southside sewer project as well as putting curb, gutter and sidewalks on Race Street for the school children to use. He later served as a City Councilman for the City of Cambridge from 2000 until 2004. He also served on the Governor's Educational Committee and as Vice President of the Maryland Municipal League. Mr. Atkinson was a life-long member of Dorchester Post # 91 American Legion, Choptank Memorial Post # 7460 V.F.W., Cambridge Lodge No. 1272 B.P.O.E. and Cambridge Moose Lodge No. 1211. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Cambridge, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class, which he had taught for a number of years, and had also served as President of the Administrative Board of Zion Church. He had also been involved in Zion's Soup Day, and had started the carryout program at Soup Day. Mr. Atkinson had been a member of a card club and enjoyed playing cards every week. He had been in failing health for several years when he passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Annette R. Atkinson of Cambridge, 5 children, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at Zion United Methodist Church on Locust Street in Cambridge with the Rev. William R. Davis, Rev. Kevin E. English and the Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded. The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM on Monday. Honorary Pallbearers will be Carson Windsor, John C. Bechtold, Bill McGinn and G. Edwin Howard. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Endowment Fund of Zion United Methodist Church, 612 Locust Street, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Slacum, Cheryl L.

Cheryl L. Slacum, 65 of Cambridge, passed away at her home on Tuesday December 21, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on April 10, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Charles Greer and Louise Tyler Slacum.

Cheryl attended schools in Cambridge, and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1963. For a number of years she had lived on the western shore. Cheryl had worked for the US Census Bureau for over 20 years. She had retired several years ago. She had relocated back to Cambridge in 2003. Cheryl later worked for First Partners One Credit Union as a teller and also operated Cheryl’s Paw Pets pet sitting service. She loved the beach, the ocean and shopping. Cheryl also loved spending time with her family. She was stricken suddenly at her home on Tuesday where she passed away.

Survivors include one daughter Tamara Bozman of Hollywood, MD, four grandchildren Brandi DiFlippo, Krista Bozman, Taylor and Chase Broadhurst, two great grandchildren Evan Eisenhard and Jay Lynn Bozman. She is also survived by two brothers Douglas G. Slacum and his wife Barbara Slacum of Friendship and Mark T. Slacum and his wife Linda Slacum of Newark, DE. and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Jay Hurley officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 PM on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 501 Race Street, Cambridge, MD 21613, or to the Dorchester Co. Humane Society, P.O. Box 132, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Stevens, Linda S.

Linda S. Stevens, 63 of Cambridge, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Wednesday March 3, 2010. She was born at Fishing Creek on May 11, 1946, and was a daughter of the late Samuel James and Gertrude Ruark Brittingham.

She attended schools in South Dorchester and graduated from South Dorchester High School in 1966. On May 5, 1967 she was married to William C. 'Billy' Stevens, Sr. Some years ago she had worked for Rippons Bros Seafood, and later worked at Bumble Bee Tuna. Linda enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and playing with her dog 'Comet'. She had been in failing health for several years and had been a patient at Dorchester General Hospital since last Friday where she passed away on Wednesday morning.

Survivors include her husband Billy Stevens of Cambridge four sons, Ralph Stevens, Larry Stevens, and his wife Ginger Stevens, William 'Chuckie' Stevens all of Cambridge and David Stevens and his wife Tracy Stevens of Dover, and one daughter Terry Shearman and her husband Todd Shearman of Easton. She is also survived by six grandchildren Erica Shearman, Ashley Shearman, Charles Shearman, Ellen Stevens, Kaitlyn Stevens and Amy Layton, two step grandchildren Faith Coleman and Sierra Coleman, two brothers in law Tim Johnson of Hurlock and Gilbert Hart of Lakesville, two sisters in law Nancy Brittingham of Cambridge and Bonnie Brittingham of Cambridge and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two sisters Cara Mae Hart and June Johnson and two brothers Lawrence S. Brittingham and Jerry Brittingham.

A funeral service will be held on Monday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home in Cambridge with the Rev. Emanuel Johnson officiating. Interment will take place at Dorchester Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. Memorial contributions may be made to the Madison Vol. Fire Co., P.O. Box 23, Madison, MD 21648. Pallbearers will be Chuck Stevens, Todd Shearman, Ralph Stevens, Tim Johnson, Larry Stevens and Bryan Blann.
