Becker, William B.

Navy

William Bain Becker died peacefully at his home in Gainesville, Virginia, on September 8, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born to Frances Charles and Charlotte Bain Becker on September 17, 1914, in St. Charles, Missouri.

He attended Washington University in St. Louis where he earned his Bachelor and Law degrees. Following graduation he moved to Washington, DC and worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration. During that time he learned to fly at College Park, MD and earned a Masters in Law at George Washington University. He served for five years as a Navy pilot during WWII. He married Jean MacFarlane in 1944. After WWII the Beckers returned to the DC area, where he worked for 34 years at the Air Transport Association, retiring as Vice President of Operations. They lived, for 40 years, and raised their 4 children in Vienna, Virginia. They moved to Oxford, Maryland in 1981 and 19 years later moved to their current home in Gainesville, Virginia. Mr. Becker loved gardening, swimming, and watching birds. He loved a good debate and a good laugh. He loved watching the Redskins and Virginia Tech. football and his beloved St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. However, his greatest loves were his wife, his family and his home.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 66 years, Jean MacFarlane Becker; his children Bain White and husband Curt White, Alan Becker and wife Beverly Becker, Donna Storey, Nancy Czarny and husband Julian Czarny; his eleven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 11, 2010, at St. Paul's Church, 225 Morris Street, Oxford, Maryland, followed by a private burial at Oxford Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to Oxford Kids Camp, P.O. Box 294, Oxford MD, 21654 or Capital Hospice Philanthropy Office, 2900 Telestar Ct, Falls Church, VA 22042, please indicate the gift is to the Manassas Office in memory of Bill Becker. Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Whitby, Judy B.

Judy B. Whitby, 72 of Robbins, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Chesapeake Woods Center in Cambridge. She was born at Robbins on September 13, 1938, and was a daughter of the late Guy Jennings and Emma Reida Slacum Bramble.

Judy graduated from South Dorchester High School in 1956. Some years ago she had worked at the Phillips Packing Co. in Cambridge. She later worked at Sears in Cambridge for 21 years. On December 22, 1972 she was married to David L. Whitby. Judy had worked for the Dorchester Department of Social Services as an eligibility worker for 19 years, retiring in October of 2000. In 2003 she went back to work at Social Services part time, and had worked until this past May. Judy was a member of Bounds United Methodist Church and had also been a member of the Church of the Nazarene for many years, where she was secretary and had also played the piano and performed numerous jobs at the church. Judy enjoyed reading and spending time with her granddaughter. She had been in failing health for the past 18 months and had been a patient at the Chesapeake Woods Center for two days when she passed away on Saturday afternoon.

Survivors include her husband David L. Whitby of Robbins, one daughter Carol w. Bloodsworth, of Cambridge, one granddaughter Emily S. Bloodsworth, of Cambridge, one sister Catherine Crockett and her husband Dave Crockett of Greenville, North Carolina, one brother D’Arcy Bramble, Sr. and his wife Dolly Bramble of Tunis Mills and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Guy Jennings Bramble, Jr.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with the Rev. Richard K. Prahl officiating. Interment will follow at the Old Whitemarsh Cemetery in Trappe. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM on Wednesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene, 97 Sandy Hill Road, Cambridge, MD 21613. Pallbearers will be Phil Reed, Richard Cole, Richard Collins, Bill Walker, Byron Baker and William Prahl.

Todd, Marian P.

Marian P. Todd, 85, of Bishops Head passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at Dorchester General Hospital. She was born in Dorchester County on October 14, 1924 and was a daughter of the late Warren S. and Maggie Dean Pritchett.

Mrs. Todd attended schools in South Dorchester. On July 13, 1944 she married Leonard W. Todd. He passed away on March 16, 2006. She had worked for I.F. Cannon and Son. Mrs. Todd had attended Wingate U.M. Church.

She is survived by a daughter Lynn and son in law Douglas Mills of Bishops Head, a special friend Bill and Bonnie Cox of Bishops Head and a health nurse Hillary Colbourne. Besides her parents, Mrs. Todd is preceded in death by a sister Rhoda Wheatley and a brother Warren H. Pritchett.

Services will be private. Memorial contributions can be made to the South Dorchester Community Center, P.O. Box 121, Church Creek, MD 21622.

Wingate, Rosalie B. "Topsy"

Rosalie B. "Topsy" Wingate, 74, of Linkwood passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010 at her home. She was born in Cambridge on July 24, 1936 and was a daughter of the late John H. Niblett, Sr. and Lillie Mae Bell Niblett.

Mrs. Wingate attended schools in Cambridge. On November 12, 1954 she married Edgar W. Wingate, Sr. He passed away on December 29, 1996. Mrs. Wingate worked at Rob Roy, Airpax, Salvation Army Thrift Store and Commander Garment. She enjoyed hanging out with her silly sisters, reading and hanging out at the local Wal-Mart. Mrs. Wingate also enjoyed her family dinners. She was a member of the Salvation Army for 67 years and the Salvation Army Home League and Seniors Group.

She is survived by two sons Edgar W. Wingate, Jr. and wife Traci of Cambridge and Richard A. Wingate and wife Judy of Linkwood, two grandchildren Matthew Wingate of Cambridge and Jessica Wingate of Linkwood, a brother Levin W. Niblett, Sr. of Cambridge, two sisters June Elzey of Cambridge and Dorothy "Kitty" Travers of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, Mrs. Wingate is preceded in death by a brother John H. Niblett, Jr. and a sister Frances Spear.

Pallbearers will be David Elzey, Otis Elzey, Tommy Foxwell, Tommy Niblett, Dickie Warfield and Pete Niblett.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. with Capt. Richard New officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Coastal Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733.

Frazier, Kathleen L.

Kathleen L. Frazier, 82, of Cambridge passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Mallard Bay Care Center where she had been a resident since February 26, 2010. She was born in Cambridge on October 28, 1927 to the late Morris and Hilda Dillon Mowbray.

Mrs. Frazier attended schools in Cambridge. On April 12, 1944 she married Roland Frazier, with whom she spent 40 wonderful years and raised 3 loving children. They made their home in Madison until Roland's death in 1984. It was then that she moved to Cambridge. Most of her life she was a homemaker. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching the Game Show Network. Kathleen was very active in the Madison United Methodist Church and the Madison Volunteer Fire Company ladies auxiliary, both of which she was a lifetime member. She had been in failing health since November and was hospitalize several times prior to her last admission on February 13, 2010 when she passed away Thursday morning.

She is survived by three children David Frazier, Darlene Frazier Brown and husband Kurt and Kathleen 'Kitten' Frazier Burton all of Cambridge, five grandchildren Ashlie Elliott of Easton, Jeremy Burton, Patrick Hughes and Thomas 'TJ'Gullion all of Cambridge and Connor Brown of St. Michaels, two great grandchildren Toby Hughes of Easton and Ethan Hughes of Cambridge, sisters Doris Marshall and Lois Jenkins and a brother Nathaniel 'Buddy' Mowbray and wife Barbara all of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Frazier is preceded in death by a brother Morris 'Sonny' Mowbray, two sisters Shirley Brohawn and Carolyn Colbourne and a very special sister in law Adith Frazier.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. A. Delmer Willey, Jr. and Rev. Kevin E. English officiating. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Frazier had requested that donations be made in her name to the Madison Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 23, Madison, MD 21648. Pallbearers will be Patrick Hughes, Jeremy Burton, TJ Gullion, Phillip 'Boy' Frazier, Michael Bradley, Kurt Brown, Jody Hughes and Wayne Mowbray. Honorary pallbearers are Woody Moran, Kenny Hubbard, Bobby Colbourne, Michael Colbourne and Chuck Colbourne.

Dixon, Austin Ryan

Austin Ryan Dixon, 18 of Finchville, passed away suddenly on Tuesday September 21, 2010. He was born in Cambridge on March 4, 1992, and was a son of Paul Thomas and Brenda Lee Rogers Dixon, Jr.

Austin had attended elementary school in Hurlock and also attended North Dorchester Middle School. He was currently a senior at North Dorchester High School where he was a member of the Chorus and loved wrestling, environmental science and tennis. Austin was a member of the Eldorado-Brookview Fire Co. following a family tradition, and had worked as the gatekeeper at the Haunted Forest the fire company had operated for several years.

Survivors include his mother and father Brenda Lee Dixon and Paul Thomas Dixon, Jr. of Finchville, two brothers Paul T. Dixon III of Finchville and Jamie Dixon and his wife Heather and their son Maddox Dixon of Preston. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents Pauline and Walter Rogers of Pasadena, paternal grandparents Ursula and Paul Dixon, Sr. of Hurlock, great grandmother Erika Riedel of Kaiserslautern, Germany as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins here as well as in Germany.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM at North Dorchester High School. Interment will follow at the Dixon Family Cemetery at Lakesville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday evening at the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge. Pallbearers will be Garvin Gounraj, Duane Demby, Jamie Booze, Paul Dixon III, Christopher Dixon and Daniel Hoffer. Kyle Glime will serve as an honorary pallbearer. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Eldorado Brookview Fire Co., 5752 Rhodesdale-Eldorado Rd. Rhodesdale, MD 21659 or to the North Dorchester High School Chorus, 5875 Cloverdale Road, Hurlock, MD 21643.

Hanks, Jr., William H.

William H. Hanks, Jr., a longtime resident of his beloved Maryland Eastern Shore, passed away at home in the morning hours of the 20th of January 2011 after a battle with cancer.

Bill was born on the 2nd of July 1943 in Wilmington Delaware, the son of the late Dr. William Hanks and Kathleen Phillips Hanks. He attended high school in Cambridge, MD, graduated from Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania in 1961, then began his higher education at Wesley College in 1965, attended University of VA for one year and graduated from John Hopkins University in 1967. Bill served in the U.S. Navy from 1968-72. His interest in aviation led him to Emery Riddle Aeronautical Institute where he attained his pilot's license in 78'. The following year, Bill returned to Maryland's Eastern Shore and founded Patamoke Stove Works. His love of the outdoors and nature was a lifelong passion; he enjoyed riding motorcycles, restoring vintage sports cars, and traveling. Bill is survived by his loving family and friends. Arrangements were in the care of the Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge.

Wheatley, Virginia B.

Virginia B. Wheatley, 86, of Crapo passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at her son’s home in Cambridge. She was born in Crapo on December 11, 1923 and was a daughter of the late William H. and Grace Wingate Bradford.

Mrs. Wheatley attended schools in Crapo. On December 24, 1941 she married George W. Wheatley, Sr. He passed away on January 15, 2009. She worked as a cafeteria manager at Crapo and South Dorchester K-8 schools for 30 years. She had also worked at Phillips Packing Company and picked crabs for I.F. Cannon and Son. She enjoyed canning, cooking and gardening. Mrs. Wheatley was a member of Lakes and Straits Volunteer Fire Company and Ebenezer United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son George W. Wheatley, Jr. and wife Joyce of Cambridge, two grandchildren NREMT-P Scott Wheatley of Hurlock and Cathi Jo Wheatley of Cambridge, great granddaughter Marie Elizabeth Wilson of Easton, a brother Franklin Bradford of Cambridge and a sister Grace Hall of Boothwin, PA and nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Wheatley is preceded in death by a brother Brady H. Bradford and two sisters Lucille Burton and Francis Adams.

Pallbearers will be Edward Bradford, Tommy Shaw, Brady Bradford, Jr., James Adams, Todd Adams, Gary Hickman and Randy Lewis.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, July 12, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with her son Pastor George W. Wheatley, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery near Hurlock. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jubilee Christian Fellowship, P.O. Box 202, Cambridge, MD 21613.

Eberspacher, Eloise Shenton

Eloise Shenton Eberspacher, 77, of Vienna passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at The Heartland House in Grasonville. She was born in Cambridge on July 3, 1933 and was a daughter of the late William H. and Lida Schuyler Shenton.

Mrs. Eberspacher attended schools in Cambridge. On July 7, 1950 she married Frederick P. Eberspacher. He passed away on August 1, 1983. She farmed with her husband until she retired in 1995. She loved looking after her grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening, reading and loved animals. She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ where she was involved in the Women's Guild.

She is survived by a daughter Carol Frase and husband Mark of Preston, three sons Douglas Eberspacher and his companion Karen Mills of Williamsburg, Ted Eberspacher and wife Cynthia of Hurlock and Mark Eberspacher and wife Betsy of Salem, eight grandchildren Doug, Scott, Eric, Alex and David Eberspacher, Kate, Michelle and Chrissy Frase, a special niece Pat Creighton, a special sister in law Ann Eberspacher and several other nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and her husband, Mrs. Eberspacher is preceded in death by 3 brothers Issac Nichols, Robert Shenton and William Shenton, two sisters Elizabeth Abbott and Virgie Kiniuk and one grandson Charles Eberspacher.

Pallbearers will be Doug Eberspacher, Scott Eberspacher, Eric Eberspacher, Alex Eberspacher, David Eberspacher and Curtis Eberspacher.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Thomas Funeral Home, P.A. in Cambridge with Rev. Anne S. Gillis officiating. Interment will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Memorial contributions can be made to the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 5401 Whitehall Road, Cambridge, MD 21613.
