Badros, M.D., Joseph Zaki

Joseph Zaki Badros, M.D., of Salisbury, MD, a longtime physician who practiced internal medicine for over thirty years, died peacefully at home of cancer, with his wife at his side, on Friday, June 16, 2006. He was 65 years old.

Born to the late Emtethal Bishai and Zaki Badros Gerges in Heliopolis, Egypt, he completed his college degree and medical school training at the University of Cairo (Egypt). In Egypt, he began his career in private practice of ophthalmologic surgery and intermal medicine. In 1968, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada, where his older brother had settled. Soon afterwards, he moved to Buffalo, New York, where he completed a residency in medicine at SUNY-Buffalo. In 1973, he and his young family came to Salisbury, where he started his medical practice in internal medicine and cardiology, which he continued until his retirement in 2005.

As a physician, he combined a passion for the art of medicine with devoted care for his patients. He was the past president of the Wicomico County Medical Society and served on various committees at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he treated patients throughout his career and held admission privileges until December 2005. Throughout his career, he enjoyed the intellectual challenge of medical diagnosis and treatment, and also demonstrated tremendous compassion for his patients, many of whom were likewise devoted to him. Colleagues, patients and employees will remember fondly his exhortations to change their health habits, to take up new hobbies and to pursue their educational and career aspirations.

A thoughtful, loving and generous father, he was enormously proud of his sons and their accomplishments. An immigrant himself, he encouraged and supported several nephews in building a new life in the United States. He and his wife, Diana shared a passion for art, and he was an accomplished, self-taught artist whose paintings on display in his office often attracted patients and colleagues to add them to their own collections. In 2003, he was thrilled to have a one-man show of his work at Salisbury University.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; three sons: Mark of New York, Gregory of San Francisco and Eric of Log Angeles; his two step-sons, Price and Christian Phillips of Salisbury. He is also survived by his sister, Rita of Cairo, Egypt and numerous nieces and nephews in Maryland, New York, California, Canada and Egypt.
