MAX G. CROTHERS
Max G. Crothers, 93, life long resident of Marlette, passed away peacefully Friday, June 13, 2008 at Marlette Regional Hospital.
He was born May 8, 1915 in Marlette, son to the late George and Lottie (Evans) Crothers.

He graduated from Marlette High School in 1932 and attended M.S.U. for 1 years. He married Gwendola Higgens on September 24, 1941 in Marlette, she has preceded him in death on February 17, 2008.

He was a long time member of the Marlette First United Methodist Church. Mr. Crothers farmed all his life and worked at Long’s Tri -County Gas Co., Huggett Sod Farm, Inc. and the former Henry Deim’s John Deer Equipment Co. in Marlette.

He is survived by son, Richard Crothers of Marlette and daughter, Barbara and Jim Cowper of Marlette.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sister Reba Yeo.

Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. in the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with Rev. Daniel Bowman officiating.

Memorials may be given to Alzheimer’s Association or the donation of your choice.

IRENE ATKINS
Irene Atkins of Marlette, Michigan passed away June 5, 2008 at the United Hospice Residence in Marlette.
She was born March 6, 1912 in Marlette, the daughter of David and Redelia (Ramsey) Harris. She graduated from Marlette High School in 1929. After graduating from Michigan State Normal College, she served as teaching principal in Horton, Michigan.

On January 26, 1938 she married Ward Atkins in Marlette. He preceded her in death on June 5, 1989.

Mrs. Atkins is survived by two daughters, Dianne Herpolsheimer and her husband Roger of Marlette and Pamela Ford and her husband Donald of Tecumseh. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Karen O’Shea, Sarah O’Shea Joshi, Brian Ford, Brenda Ford Nelson, Ward O’Shea, Betsy Ford Adler, and Meredith Atkins; two step-grandchildren, Dawn Herpolsheimer Woodburn and Scott Herpolsheimer, and nine great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Paul; two brothers, Ralph Densmore and Albert Densmore; and two sisters, Lula Cotter and Veva Blank.

Mrs. Atkins was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a homemaker and enjoyed substitute teaching in the Marlette Schools. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher and active in the United Methodist Women. She was a charter member of the Philomathean Club and had a great love for the Marlette community. Ward and Irene were honored as Marlette Senior King and Queen in 1987.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on June 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Marlette First United Methodist Church. You are welcome to visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Marlette, the Marlette Historical Society, or the United Hospice Residence of Marlette.

ORA M. FITCH
Ora M. Fitch, 87, of Greenback passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2008 at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home in Knoxville, TN.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country in WW11. He retired from Ford Motor Company after 33 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents Milo and Ina Fitch; brother, Clarence Fitch; and sister, Ruth Beltz.

Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Deloris Mercer Fitch; two sons, Mark Fitch and wife Marty and Matthew Fitch and wife Deborah; grandson, Matthew Fitch, Jr. and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Memorial services were conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, 2008 at the Sherwood Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home, One Veterans Way, Knoxville, TN, 37931. Arrangements by Sherwood Chapel and Memorial Gardens.

MARTHA M. MASTEN
Martha M. Masten, 92, of Shabbona, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Marlette, Michigan.
She was born November 9, 1915 in Canada, the daughter of the late Johann and Augusta (Marzufka) Wenhardt.

She married Dan (JD) Masten on December 31, 1938 in Angola, Indiana. He died on February 11, 1988.

She was a lifelong area resident and an active member in Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Cass City, the Sanilac 4-H and was a 4-H Leader, the Ladies Extension in Shabbona and a volunteer Gray Lady at Marlette Hospital.

She was a member of the 1933 Brown City High School Sanilac County Basketball Championship Team.

She enjoyed painting, senior citizen groups, and watching her grandchildren play sports.

She is survived by Charlotte and the late Ronald Behr (daughter) of Marlette, Sally and Jesse Zimba (daughter) of Deford; five grandchildren, Tom and Lynn Behr of Fenton, Ronda and Mike Bower of Marlette, Amy and Marc Cohen of Commerce Twp., Ben and Estee Zimba of Deford and Chelsee Zimba of Napes, Florida; four great-grandchildren, Chad and Aaron Bower, Alyssa and Ella Cohen.

She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Mike.

Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory, Bay City. Memorial services were conducted Monday, June 9, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette with Pastor Gerald Meyer officiating. Horderves followed the service at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Marlette.

Memorial suggestions to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Cass City, Shabbona United Methodist Womens or any organization of the donors personal choice. Arrangements by Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette, .

NORMA JEAN SELEY
Norma Jean Seley, 83, of Marlette, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Marlette Hospice Residence in Marlette, Michigan.
She was born May 21, 1925 in Peck, Michigan, the daughter of the late Edwin and Ada (Duckworth) Mahaffy.

She was a lifelong area resident, a 1942 graduate of Brown City High School, and earned her Bachelors of Education Degree from Michigan State University in 1946. She married John Seley on March 7, 1948 in Omard, MI.

She was a member of the Marlette First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Thumb Quilters, and held an office in the M.A.R.S.P.

She taught Home Economics for 30 years teaching at Deckerville, Mayville, Kingston, and Marlette, where she retired from in 1980.

She enjoyed making stuffed animals, leather crafting, quilting, flower gardening, shopping and especially spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, John; Wade and Beverly Seley (son) of Grand Rapids, Sharol and Frank Stoick (daughter) of Marlette, David Seley (son) of Marlette; Hazel Mahaffy (sister) of Peck, five grandchildren, Chad, Chris, Jill, Heidi and Jessica and two great-grandchildren, Zack and Abby.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Marsh Funeral Chapel, Marlette with Rev. John R. Allan officiating.

Burial was in the Marlette cemetery in Marlette.

Casketbearers were Chad Stoick, Chris Stoick, Keith Agar, Gary Hood, Bill Ross, Chris Heussner.

Memorial Suggestions to United Hospice or Alzheimers Association.

RICHARD D. SPEAR
Richard D. Spear, 72, life long resident of Marlette, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, June 3, 2008.
He was born March 2, 1936 in Marlette, son to the late Seth and Ila (Barrons) Spear.

He graduated from Marlette High School in 1954.

Mr. Spear served in the U.S. Army for two years.

He married Athlene Strickler on August 31, 1963 in Marlette.

He was a long time member of the Clifford Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 28 years and youth groups for 20 years.

He worked for Moore Ice Cream, McDonald's Foodland, Marlette Home’s and Rochester Gear and also served on the Marlette Ambulance Service for 14 years. He enjoyed reading, teaching Sunday School and, most of all, his family.

He is survived by his wife, Athlene; two sons, Jerrun and Michelle Spear of Caro and Ryan and Joanne Spear of Imlay City; grand-daughter Nicole Walker of Caro; two sisters, Kay and Larry Barber of Fremont and Judy and James Engelmann of Davison.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Clifford Baptist Church, with Rev. Tim L. Rich officiating.

Burial followed in the Marlette cemetery.

Memorials may be donated to the Clifford Baptist Church.

RANDY D. TRUAX
Randy D. Truax, 57, of Kingston, died suddenly, Tuesday, June 3, 2008 at his home in Koylton Twp.
He was born January 16, 1951 in Lapeer, son to the late Rolland and Jessie (Roach) Truax.

He graduated from Lapeer High School in 1971.

He married Linda Bussure on October 9, 1971 in Marlette.

He owned and operated Randy's Tractor Repair the past 19 years.

Mr. Truax enjoyed fishing, driving his 54 Chevrolet and, most of all, his family.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; one son, Adam and Heather Truax of Marlette; two daughters, Jennifer Spear of Clifford and Tanya and Frank Benjamin of Deckerville; three brothers, LeRoy and Jan Truax of North Branch, Marlin and Elvina Truax of Columbiaville and Ricky Truax of Vassar; three sisters, Joan Simpson of Georgia, Pat and Bill Schriber of Summerset, KY. and Janis and Tom Smyczak of North Branch; four grandchildren, Jesse, Ariel, Charity and Alexis. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sonny.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, June 6, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with Fr. Richard Treml officiating.

Interment will be in St. Patrick’s cemetery.
