David E. Walcott, age 78, of Byron Center, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 14, 2017. David honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and spent most of his time serving in Germany. He went on to work as a tool and die maker until his retirement. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, boating, camping, and spending time at Sandy Pines. Preceding him in death are his parents, Harold and Gladys Walcott, and brother-in-law, Marvin Lyon. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 50 years, Berdean; his children, Denise Walcott, Brian (Angie) Walcott; grandchildren, Kahlan and Issac Walcott; sisters and brother, Valerie Lyon, Richard (Jane) Walcott, Beth (Al) Palmer; several nieces and nephews. The family will greet visitors on Friday, June 16, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, June 17, at Woodhaven Reformed Church, 3959 68th St. SW, with Pastor Steve Petroelje officiating. There will be a time of visiting prior to the service from 11 - 11:45 am. Interment in Winchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Woodhaven Reformed Church.

Elaine M. Buchanan, age 90, formerly of Caledonia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Elaine was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Along with her husband, Ed, she owned and operated Southwest Body Shop, where she did the bookkeeping. She was a longtime member of Caledonia United Methodist Church and of the Caledonia Eastern Stars. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents, Warren and Blanche Tape; and son-in-law, Allan Jousma. Surviving are her daughters, Diane (Johnny) Dutcher, Linda Jousma, Dawn (Larry) Stauffer, Sheila (Mike) Maxwell, Debra (Kevin) McVoy; 13 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; brothers, Fritz (Pam) Tape, Kurt (Barb) Tape, Ryan (Tina) Tape; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including a long time family friend, June Plummer. The family expresses sincere thanks to Heather Hills Village Care, Faith Hospice, and Visiting Angels for their loving care. Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.

Katherine Ann Hovinga Bojas, age 55, of Kentwood, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 11, 2017. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mary Jane Hovinga; and brother, Paul Hovinga. Katherine will be lovingly remembered by her children, Jordan and Andrew Bojas; brothers and sister, John (Diana) Hovinga, Mark Hovinga, Mary Hovinga; three nieces and two nephews. A memorial service will be held 1:00 pm Saturday, June 17, at Stroo Funeral Home, with an hour of visitation prior to the service from 12 noon to 1 pm.

Janice M. "Jan" Van Stedum, age 73, of Byron Center, entered her heavenly home on Sunday, June 11, 2017. Jan graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. Her many occupations include working as a secretary, teaching upholstery classes, working with autistic special needs students, church leadership, and in-home child care. A special friend, mom, and aunt, she was caring, thoughtful and kind, considerate and always ready to help. Jan will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 55 years, Gene; her daughters, Sue Van Stedum and Laurie (Steve) Dankowski; grandchildren, David and April Dankowski; father, Les (Evie) Beimers; step brother, David Boersma; step sister, Jill De Vries; brothers-in-law, James, Herm, Bob, Ernie, Doug, Ken Van Stedum; sisters-in-law, Pearl Van Stedum, Carol Persenaire, Sharon Van De Weert, Janice Decker, Cyndi Pio. Her mother, Nellie; and sisters, Judy and Carol, preceded her in death. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at First Cutlerville Christian Reformed Church (1425 68th St. SW). A memorial service will be held 4 pm Friday, June 16, at First Cutlerville C.R.C., with Rev. Ken Van Wyk officiating. Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Christian Services or Faith Hospice.

Henry “Hank” “Boots” Ploeg, age 81, passed away peacefully at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Byron Center, MI, on Monday, June 5, 2017. A native of Dutton, Henry loved fishing and the outdoors. He was a veteran of both the Marine Corps and the Air Force, ultimately retiring from that branch; he then began a long career with Michigan CAT, retiring in 2001. He is survived by his sons, Robert (Isabelle) Ploeg, and Gordon (Renee) Ploeg of Nevada, his daughter, Nikki (Tim) Bronson of Connecticut; siblings, Ivan (Gladys), Ilah (Lynema), Jim, and Richard (Irma); stepbrothers, Jerry Waddell and Chad Brooks; sister-in-law, Gerry Ploeg; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and close friend, Dawn Redding (mother of Gordon and Robert) and best friend and caretaker, Rita Shuker (mother of Nikki). Hank will always be remembered for his happy nature, sense of humor, and love for his family. The family will greet visitors on Thursday, June 8, from 1 - 3 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where the funeral will begin at 3 pm. Rev. Cathy Peters will officiate. Interment in Ft. Gerald James "Jerry" Postema, age 91, of Grand Rapids, entered his heavenly home on Sunday, June 4, 2017. Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He loved playing card games with family and friends. His wife, Myrtle Geneva; daughters, Gail Davis, DaleAnn Postema; brother, Roger; and sister, Dorothy Horton, preceded him in death. Gilbert B. "Gib" VanDyke, age 94, of Cutlerville, went home to glory on Sunday, May 28, 2017. Gib honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After owning Jack and Gib's Market in Cutlerville for a time, he went on to work as a wholesale grocery manager for United Wholesale Grocery for many years. His dear wife of 52 years, Helen (Winters), preceded him in death. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Ken (Chi Chi) VanDyke, Jerry (Deb) VanDyke, and Erin Hart; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; his brothers and sister, Martin (Ruth) VanDyke, John (Hilda) VanDyke, Henry VanDyke, Henrietta (Art) Sjoerdsma; many nieces and nephews. A service celebrating the life and faith of Gib VanDyke will be held at 11 AM Friday, June 2, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church (7171 Willard Ave. SE), where Gib was a charter member, with Rev. Curt Walters and Rev. Cal VanderMeyden officiating. Private interment in Kent Memorial Gardens will precede the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroad Bible Institute. The family will greet relatives and friends at Stroo Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 PM.

Martin Geelhoed, age 94, of Caledonia, entered his heavenly home on Friday, June 16, 2017. Martin was an honest, hardworking man of integrity who loved his Lord above all. He will be remembered for his wit and sense of humor. He dearly loved his family and will be deeply missed by his wife of 72 years, Beatrice; his children, Patricia Kooienga, Linda (Tom) Wierenga, Terry L. (Barbara Lenneman) Geelhoed; 11 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; foster daughter, Mary Ann Van Swol; brother, Ray (Claribell) Geelhoed; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard (Tressa) Herrema, Ruth (Floyd) Postma, Steve (Carrie) Herrema, Marian Kramer, Nelson (Jean) Herrema, Arland (Linda) Herrema; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as many church family and friends. His son, Tim, two grandsons, Rodney Huizinga and Gregory Geelhoed, two brothers, one sister, and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, preceded him in death. The family will greet visitors on Sunday, June 18, from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, and Monday, June 19, from 10 - 10:45 am at Providence Christian Reformed Church, 7730 Eastern Ave. SE, where the funeral will begin at 11 am. Rev. Bob Boersma will officiate. Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Contributions in memory of Martin may be made to Providence CRC Master Builders Fund or Faith Hospice.
