Marvin James DeGood, age 80, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 30, 2017. Marv proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, and retired from Steelcase after 30 years of service. His wife, Karabell "Kara" preceded him in death. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Phyllis; his sons, Thad DeGood, Joel (Amy) DeGood; his grandchildren, Alyssa, Benjamin, and Barbara DeGood; sister, Marcia (John) Monsma; brothers, David (Barbara) DeGood, Randy (Gerri) DeGood; stepchildren, Lori Force; Kathy (Tim) Metternick; four step-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ken (Lavonne) Lachniet, Margaret Eefsting, Ron (Judy) Lachniet; nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, April 4, at Princeton Christian Reformed Church, 5330 Kalamazoo Ave. SE, with Rev. Jerry DeVries officiating. Interment in Blain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice. The family will greet visitors on Monday from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and Tuesday prior to the service from 10 - 10:45 am at the church.

David Randall (Randy) Gabrielse, age 49, of Grand Rapids, MI, left to join the Lord on Saturday, April 15, 2017, after a 16 month battle with a brain tumor. Randy was born on February 8, 1968 in Mt. Clemens, MI, the oldest son of David and Judy Gabrielse. He married Karen Kay Gilliland on October 28, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his mother, Judy; grandmother, Cornelia Gabrielse; four brothers, Greg (Carrie), Kevin (Karen), Dan (Beth), Steve; as well as six nieces and one nephew. After surviving childhood leukemia, Randy became an avid reader, bicyclist and runner. While a student at Calvin College, Randy was a member of the cross country team. The Randy Gabrielse Perseverance Award was created in honor of his work ethic and is now awarded annually. At Calvin, Randy majored in history in 1989, and then went on to complete a masters and doctorate in US History at Michigan State University in 2002. In 2016, Randy completed a Certificate in Urban Ministry from Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI. Randy served as a CRC campus minister at Iowa State from 2004-2009. As a result of his experiences in Iowa, Randy's love for Creation Care and gardening became a real passion. He worked to help others in the struggle with what it means to be a faithful steward in God's world and advocated for local food. After moving back to Grand Rapids in 2009, Randy began doing more urban ministry work - working to help those on the margins to develop resources and relationships. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, at 11 am at Eastern Ave. CRC (514 Eastern Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, Mi 49503). Visitation will also be at Eastern Ave. CRC on Friday, April 28, from 1-3 pm and 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Mary Free Bed-Bikes for the Rest of Us or CORR (Congregations Organizing for Racial Reconciliation).

James Kuipers, age 86, of Byron Center, was called to his heavenly home on Saturday, April 15, 2017. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed his morning coffee break with his friends. Preceding him in death are his brothers, Alfred (Fanna) Kuipers, John (Jeanette) Kuipers, Nelson Kuipers, Peter Kuipers, Harold Kuipers; his sister, Stena Warsen; brothers-in-law, John Warsen, Rich Gruessing, Richard Euwema, Adrian VanderHeide, Case Koetje; sister-in-law, Carol Kuipers; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, William (Nellie) Dykgraaf, Everett (Winifred) Dykgraaf, Bub (Hattie) Dykgraaf, Lawrence (Jo) Dykgraaf, Caroline (Ed) Fredricks. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 66 years, Harriet; his children, Douglas (Sheila) Kuipers, Cheryl (Douglas) Hulst, Gregory (Tammy) Kuipers; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeannette Koetje, Agnes Euwema; brother, Donald Kuipers; sisters-in-law, Harriet Kuipers, Nora Mae Kuipers, Gladys Kuipers, Grace Warsen; several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 am Thursday, April 20, at Cutlerville East Christian Reformed Church, 501 68th St. SE, with Rev. Bill Renkema officiating. There will be an hour of visitation prior to the service at the church. Interment in Winchester Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cutlerville East CRC or Faith Hospice Trillium Woods.

Marjorie Lou Baker, age 88, of Caledonia, entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter; a brother, James Fitzsimmons; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marie and Lyle Eldridge, Edwin Smith, and Barbara Boes. Marjorie was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and will be deeply missed by her children, Sharon (Joe) Olszewski, Thomas (Linda) Baker, Jacqueline (Ralph) Bos, Roxanne (Terry) Hoeksema, Scot Baker; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brothers, William Fitzsimmons, Jack (Margaret) Fitzsimmons, Ken (Cheryl) Fitzsimmons; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Nancy Fitzsimmons, Elizabeth (Emerson) Smith, Elaine Smith, Jerry (Marjorie) Baker, Bert Boes; many nieces and nephews. Marjorie was a long time member of Alaska Baptist Church (7240 68th St. SE) where the funeral will be held 11 am Tuesday, April 4, Rev. Brian F. Harrison officiating. Interment in Alaska Cemetery. Robert Walter Shuker, age 71, of Grand Rapids, was called to his Heavenly home on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, after years of health struggles. Robert proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, and was an avid Detroit Lions fan. He retired from Michigan CAT after 36 years of service and has remained close to many work friends. He enjoyed going to Sandy's Restaurant and made many friends there, also. He had many happy years with his beloved dogs, Knute and Pork Chop Walter. Preceding him in death is his dearly beloved granddaughter, Samantha Hope Hayes. He will be loving remembered by his wife of 36 years, Rita; his daughters, Jennifer (Greg) Heim, Staci (Roberto) Collins, Nikki (Tim) Bronson; grandchildren, Lucy and Jack Heim. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 2, from 1 - 3 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, where a memorial service will begin at 3 pm. William Edward Helsel, Jr., age 73, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 10, 2017. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Bill served as a Military Policeman during the Vietnam War. After receiving his honorable discharge, he began working for Rapistan where he worked until his retirement. His two brothers, Michael and Gary Helsel, preceded him in death. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and George Lawlor; grandchildren, Lexus and Anthony; mother, Veronica Helsel; brother, Curtis Helsel, Sr.; and his nieces and nephews. Bill will be interred at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans.

Preceding him in death are his son, Howard; and six brothers and a sister. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Dorothy; his children, Michael Lapekes, Yvonne Lapekes, Debra (Victor) Capello, Janice Koolman, Gerald Lapekes; Dorothy's children, Denise (Mike) Stebbins, Michael Morris; 20 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; brother, Larry (Cindy) Lapekes; sister, Lorraine Ostrander; many nieces and nephews.
