Feuling, Robert Franklin Sr.
Robert F. Feuling Sr., 59, Arcadia, WI, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999 at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Medical Center, LaCrosse, WI.

Funeral services were Monday, August 2 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, with Rev. Raymond Pedretti officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia.

Strobush, Joel Nathaniel
Joel Nathaniel Strobush, 8, 405 West Howard St., died Friday, July 30, 1999 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Joel was born on January 25, 1991 in Winona, the son of Dennis Dale and Cynthia Lou (Gudvangen) Strobush. Joel had recently completed the second grade at Goodview Elementary School where he was well loved by both faculty and student body alike.

Joel was active in the Kiwanis Special Olympics for the past three years, a big fan of Barney and Veggie Tales, loved balloons and enjoyed attending his brother Kevin's basketball games.

Joel is survived by his parents, Dennis and Cynthia; brothers, Kevin, Seth and Luke, all at home; sisters, Katie Polus, Boston, MA and Rachelle Strobush, at home; grandparents, LeRoy and Adeline Gudvangen, Fertile, MN and Edna Strobush, Rochester, MN; and nephew, Dylan Gordon.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Dale Strobush.

Funeral services were Tuesday, August 3 at Pleasant Valley Church with Dr. George Ray officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Seth Strobush, Kevin Strobush, Todd Gudvangen and Jan Markison.

Honorary casketbearers were Terry Strobush, Luke Strobush, Katie Polus and Rachelle Strobush.

Joel seldom cried and never complained. He will fondly be remembered as a child who always had time for a hug and brightened other peoples' days with his infectious laugh and radiant smiles.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the funeral arrangements.

Platteter, Walter Joseph

Walter Joseph Platteter, 92, Arcadia, WI, died Saturday, July 31, 1999 at St. Joseph's Nursing Home in Arcadia.

Funeral services were Tuesday, August 3 at Christ Lutheran Church with Rev. Arthur Sharot officiating. Burial was in Glencoe Lutheran Cemetery.

Palmquist, Vernon L.
Vernon L. Palmquist, 75, Minneapolis, MN, died Friday, July 30, 1999.

Funeral services were Tuesday at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Purtzer, Hazel A.
Hazel A. Purtzer, 94, died Friday, July 30, 1999. She had been a resident of St. Anne Hospice, where she received professional and loving care for the past four years.

She was born October 28, 1904, to William and Eva (Davis) Dickerson, in Atkinson, NE. She married Stanley R. Purtzer on December 13, 1928.

Hazel was a member of the Methodist Church. She worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for the YMCA in Fremont, NE, for a number of years.

She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, raising irises and painting with oils.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Purtzer, Minnesota City, MN, and James Purtzer, Lincoln, NE; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and nine brothers and sisters. Stanley Purtzer died February 3, 1990.

Funeral services for friends in Winona were Monday at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. A second service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 4 at the Seger Funeral Home in Atkinson, NE. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Atkinson.

Mitchell, Ruth M.
Ruth M. Mitchell, 79, formerly of 466 East Sarnia, Lakeview Manor Apartments, died Sunday, August 1, 1999 at the Watkins Home.

She was born March 28, 1920 at Shawnee, OK, to Oliver and Leahla (Parkhurst) Box. She graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City. She married LaVerne Mitchell on March 20, 1944 at Oklahoma City.

She worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Rush Products in Lewiston, Winona Industries, and Northern Engraving, Galesville, WI, retiring in 1982.

She was preceded in death by her husband, sons, Gary, Joseph, Charles and Ernest, and five brothers.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Mitchell, Winona and Kenneth (Opal) Mitchell, Georgia; two daughters, Margaret Wilson and Katherine (Norman) Meska, both of Winona; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Raymond Box, Moore, OK; and a sister, Della (Lester) Montgomery of Oklahoma City.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 4 at 10 a.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Ron Carlson of First Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be held after 9 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Homola, Stephen John
Stephen John Homola, 48, Stockton, MN, died Saturday, July 31, 1999 as the result of injuries received in a motorcycle-car accident.

His wife, Jeanne, 43, a passenger on the cycle, remains in critical but stable condition in St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN.

The owner of Riverwood Glass Co., Steve was born December 24, 1950 in Farmington, MN, to Joseph C. and Viola (Loth) Homola. He was a graduate of Winona Senior High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He married the former Jeanne Duggan of the Chicago area at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.

He previously was in partnership in the Glass Circus, Winona, a stained glass company. For years he had been employed by the Hauser Glass Co. and by Dick Cieminski. He also was in partnership with his cousin Tom Lee, in the Legacy Leaded Glass Co.

Survivors are his wife, Jeanne; three sons, Joe, 21, Tony 16, and Johnny, 6, all at home; his mother, Vi Homola Benicke, Stockton; a sister, Mrs. Cliff (Sheila) Murray, Winona; a brother, Ralph (Peggy) Benicke, Plymouth, MN and their daughter Annie.

His father, a sister, Sandra Homola, and his grandparents have died.

Steve was a kind, gentle and soft hearted man, who loved his family members. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors and all of nature. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Joseph Keefe officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, August 5, from 6-8 p.m at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home.

A memorial is being arranged.

Wroblewski, Helen N.
Helen N. Wroblewski, 88, of 750 West Fifth St., died Monday, August 2, 1999 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born November 1, 1910 in St.Charles, MN, to Herman and Emma (Naatz) Kempe. She married Leonard G. Wroblewski on July 24, 1934 in St.Casimir's Catholic Church, Winona. He died May 31, 1984.

She was a member of St. Casimir's Parish.

She was a graduate of St. Charles High School and Winona General Hospital School of Nursing. In 1946 she started working at the hospital as head nurse for 2-West, 2-East and Pediatrics and held this position until she was appointed Nursing Supervisor in 1964. In 1965, Helen was appointed Inservice Supervisor, a position she held for 7 years. In 1972 she assumed the position of Nursing Supervisor until she retired. During World War II, Helen also served as a volunteer for the Red Cross.

Survivors include three sisters, Bessie Millard and Ruth Kempe, both of St. Charles, and Emma (Marvin) Teske, Rochester, MN; five nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, August 5 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church with Rev. James W. Hennessy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Preliminary services will be at 10 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Frie, Laura Mary (Sutter)
Laura Mary (Sutter) Frie, 99, was born in Fountain City, WI, on June 1, 1900 to Florian and Anna (Grossell) Sutter. At ten days of age she received the Sacrament of Baptism from Father Alois Schauenberg, who was then pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Fountain City. Her sponsors were Carl and Mary (Sutter) Grossell.

She received her first or Solemn Communion in 1914 from Father Peter Eicker who succeeded Father Schauenberg as pastor of Immaculate Conception. She also received the Sacrament of Confirmation in 1914 from the Most Reverend James Schwebach, the third Bishop of the LaCrosse Diocese.

She attended schools in the Fountain City area including two years at Immaculate Conception.

On November 19, 1924 she was united in marriage to William J. Frie in Caledonia, MN. After their wedding they resided in Cudahy, WI, where Mr. Frie was employed, and later returned to Fountain City and then purchased the Frie family farm on Fountain City Ridge, which they owned and operated for 32 years. Failing health forced Mr. Frie to stop farming. Mr. Frie passed away on February 7, 1972 at a nursing home in Eau Claire, WI.

On September 18, 1989 she was admitted to St. Michael's Home for the Aged and was a resident at St. Michael's at the time of her death on Saturday, July 31, 1999.

She is survived by a brother, Edward (Lucille) Sutter of Eau Claire; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Fountain City. Preliminary services will be at 10 a.m. at Colby-Fawcett Funeral Home, Fountain City.

Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Charles Sutter, Richard Sutter, Candy Berg, Kathy Franzwa, Dawn Jumper and Shelly Koenig.

The family requests that Masses be offered for Laura.

Woods, John H. "Jack"
John H. "Jack" Woods, 81, 6 Huron Lane, died Saturday, August 8, 1998 at Saint Anne Hospice.

He was born March 21, 1917 in LaCrosse, WI. He married Dolores K. Schmitt on April 29, 1939.

He was employed at and retired from Winona State University as a maintenance supervisor.

John was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Besides his family, Jack's great love was music. In the "Big Band" era, he played alto and tenor saxophone and clarinet with many well known musicians, including Danny Polo and Jimmy Dorsey. Locally, he was a member of the Denny Martin Band. He also loved the great outdoors, especially the Mississippi River. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. The beauty of the river always brought him back to the Winona area. He shared his love of music and the outdoors with the children and his wife, whom he dearly loved.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores; two daughters, Jacqueline Johnson of West Salem, WI and Katherine (Donald) Lehman, Woodridge, IL; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin sons, and a brother.

Funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 12 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 11:30 a.m., with Rev. Michael Forbes of Rochester, MN officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Memorial Garden.

Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Garden at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

He will be greatly missed by his friends and family, especially his wife, who was his best friend and lifelong companion.

Carlblom, Ralph "Spike"
Ralph "Spike" Carlblom, 91, 1335 Lakeview Avenue, died Friday, August 7, 1998 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Cokato, MN on March 28, 1907 to Frank B. and Mayme H. (Hoard) Carlblom. Spike married Helen E. Marsh on November 8, 1940.

He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota, where he played baseball and hockey. He then played semi-pro baseball in several cities in the Upper Midwest.

He is a member of Central Lutheran Church, and a long time member of its choir. He had a real love for golf and is a former member of Winona Country Club. He is also a former member of the Winona Barbershoppers.

He had owned and operated Auto Electric Service from 1937 until selling it and retiring about 1970.

Spike is survived by his wife, Helen of Winona; a son, Robert Carlblom, Los Angeles, CA; a daughter, Kathryn (Mitchell) Leland, Colorado Springs, CO; a sister Melba Andersen, St. Paul, MN. He is also survived by many loving relatives on both sides of his family.

Spike was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Memorial services are Wednesday, August 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church, with Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
