Frisby, Sarah E.
Sarah E. Frisby, 19, of Galesville, Wis., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Sarah was born Sept. 7, 1979, in Winona, to Don and Sally (Sievers) Frisby. She was a graduate of Winona Cotter High School and had attended Winona State University. She was employed by Happy Chef Restaurant in Winona.

Sarah was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galesville. She loved to sing and dance. She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed Shakespeare and the theater. She wrote poetry and enjoyed charcoal sketching. Sarah also enjoyed movies of the 30's and 40's, gardening and floral arranging. She traveled and camped across our country with her family. Her smile and laughter will be missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Sarah is survived by her parents, Don and Sally of Galesville; three sisters, Dain (Randy) Dart of Antioch, Calif., Ianna Frisby of Sacramento, Calif., Rachel Frisby at home; two brothers, David Frisby and Michael Frisby, both at home; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Valora Frisby of Rushford, Minn.; maternal grandparents, Lester and Elizabeth Sievers of Winona; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 22, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Galesville with Rev. Robert

Wagner officiating. Spring burial in Pine Cliff Cemetery in Galesville.

Friends may call at the church on Thursday, Jan. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a liturgical vigil at 8 p.m.

Zwickey Funeral Home in Galesville is assisting with arrangements.

Spanton, Judge Conway "Connie"
Judge Conway "Connie" Spanton, Geneseo, IL died October 29, 1998.

He was born May 24, 1925 in Winona, the son of Maurice and Geneva (Vier) Spanton.

"Connie" was raised and educated in Winona graduating from Winona Senior High School in 1943. He graduated from the University of Illinois Law School and served in the Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lois; a daughter, Lisa Spanton; and a son, Steve and wife Martha; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his mother, Geneva Spanton.

Harris, Ralph H.
Ralph Hammond Harris, 89, 773 West Fifth St., died Friday, January 15, 1999 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Winona June 7, 1909, the son of James Edward and Maud (Hammond) Harris. He married Meta Dorothy Moh on March 16, 1935 in Granton, WI. She survives him and is currently residing at Sauer Memorial Home.

Ralph graduated from Winona High School and received further technical training in Milwaukee, WI. He was a millwright for Froedtert Malt Company of Winona. He later worked as a repairman at Winona State University until his retirement.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Winona.

Also surviving are two sons, Roger (Dollis) of Stillwater, MN and David (Judy) of Rochester, MN; a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Saxlund, Pipestone, MN; eight grandchildren; a brother, James (Peggy) Harris, Cherokee Village, AR; and two sisters, Mary Ellen Crouch Peterson, Orlando, FL and Elizabeth "Betty" (M.F. "Jack") Sweeney, Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Harriet Hames Lee and Ruth Schmidt.

Funeral services were Monday, January 18, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, with Rev. Oliver H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Ralph's grandchildren, Ralph Harris, Karla Harris, Dora Harris, Jennifer Mills, Thomas Harris, Robert Harris, Melissa Saxlund and Steve Saxlund.

Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Lutheran Church or Winona State University.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.

Cole, Sophie Thaldorf
Sophie Thaldorf Cole, 96, Noblesville, IN and formerly of South Bend, IN, died January 15, 1999 at Noblesville Nursing Home.

Graveside services were Friday, January 22 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Sagan, John
John Sagan, 78, 5150 West Ninth St., died Thursday, August 27, 1998 at his home, after a long illness.

He was born near Przymsyl in Poland on June 10, 1920 to Michael and Barbara (Pajock) Sagan. He married Erna Ruber Burmberger on April 30, 1949 in Linz, Austria.

At the age of 19, he was taken by force to Germany to work on a farm and then an airplane factory where he joined the English supported underground fighting against the Nazis. He was arrested by the Gestapo and placed in a concentration camp in Mauthausen, Austria, where he survived for 3-1/2 years until liberated by the American Army. He then served two years with the American Occupation Army and then worked in the Officer's Mess Hall. He married Erna and later left for the United States, coming to Winona where he worked on a farm for a year. After working for three years for Saint Mary's College Farm, he was then employed by Badger Machine Co. which became Warner and Swasey and then Badger Equipment Co., for a total of 30 years.

John was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, St. Joseph Society of the Catholic Aid Association, the Knights of Columbus Council #639, and UAW Local #633. He also served 17 years as a volunteer in Civil Defense (Police Reserve) for the City of Winona.

As a devoted husband, father and grandfather, he was respected and loved by family and friends. He became a U.S. Citizen in 1954.

He is survived by his wife, Erna of Goodview, MN; and five sons: Edward (Carol) Onalaska, WI, John, Jr., Fountain City, WI; Guenther (Brenda) Elk River, MN, Neil (Susan) Fountain City, and Francis, St. Paul, MN; ten grandsons: Hans, Nick, Chris, Jeremy, Karl, Kurran, Nathan, Adam, Jordan and Tony; five granddaughters: Beth, Rachel, Kassi, Cindy and Angela; four great-grandchildren: Ashley, Landon, Delaney and Meridian; a sister, Slavka of the Ukraine; a brother, Stacho, Moscow; many nieces and nephews in the Ukraine and Moscow; and a special cousin, Sofi Zozula, Boston, MA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Wladyslaw of Tasmania, and two sisters, Sofi and Maria of the Ukraine.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, September 1, at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with preliminary services at 9:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rev. Robert G. Meyer will officiate.

Friends may call Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the funeral home with a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be grandsons.

A memorial is being arranged.

Henry, Esther M.
Esther M. Henry, 97, Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Winona, died Monday, August 10, 1998 at Jones Harrison Residence in Minneapolis.

Memorial services were Friday, August 28 at at Central Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Mary E. Hurmence officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Petz, Ralph E.
Ralph E. Petz, 73, 1635 Edgewood Road, died peacefully at home after a short illness with a rare type of renal cancer on Thursday, August 27, 1998.

Ralph was born March 7, 1925 in Rochester, MN, son of Eric and Alvina Petz. He married Beatrice (Betty) Bale in Prestwick Ayrshire, Scotland on June 10, 1948. The couple recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

The Air Force was very dear to Ralph's heart. He spent 11 years of active duty and a remaining 22 years in the Air Force Reserves, retiring with the grade of Lieutenant Colonel on March 7, 1985.

Ralph enjoyed helping people finance their first homes as part of his 30 year career in banking with the Norwest Banking Corporation. He retired March 1, 1986 with the position of Senor Vice-President.

Ralph was active in many community organizations including board member of the Winona Occupational Rehabilitation Center, Winona Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and the Wesley Foundation; past President of the United Way of Winona and member of the American Legion.

He was an avid hunter, especially with his two hunting buddies Kenny Seebold and Merlyn Von Bargen. Fishing, golfing, traveling, camping and walking were also especially enjoyable activities for him.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Beatrice (Betty); two daughters, Diane Scharmer and Jackie Petz of Winona; a son, Bruce (Jan) Petz, Rochester, MN; four grandchildren, Jonathan Scharmer, Minneapolis, Jeffrey (Joan) Scharmer, Winona and Jessica and Andrew Petz, both of Rochester; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Katelyn Scharmer, both of Winona; and many friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 31 at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church, 161 West Broadway, Winona, with Rev. Rick King officiating. Lunch will be served followed by interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Rochester, MN.

Casketbearers will be Max DeBolt, Randy Domeyer, John Nett, Kenneth Seebold, Merlyn Von Bargen and Charles Doffing.

Honorary casketbearers will be John Tlougan, Daniel B. Hoyt, Curtis Capps, Frank Renning, Tim Bennick and Kenneth Rohde.

Friends and family may call Sunday evening August 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the Fawcett Funeral Home, 1476 West Broadway.

Ralph will be remembered always for his sincerity, love, and commitment to his family and work. We will miss you very much.

The family especially wishes to thank the Winona Hospice Service for enabling Ralph to die with peace and dignity at home with his family at his bedside. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to either Home and Community Options or Winona Hospice Service.

Kukowski, Eleanore J.
Eleanore J. Kukowski, 81, 762 West Fifth St., died Thursday, August 27, 1998 at her home.

She was born January 19, 1917 in Wausau, WI to Anthony and Anastasia (Sieracki) Szuminski. She married James A. Kukowski on September 1, 1941 in St. Casimir's Church. He died August 5, 1992.

She was a member of St. Casimir's Parish and taught CCD for 32 years until 1994. She was a teacher at St. Stanislaus and St. Casimir's Schools. She later worked at Saint Anne Hospice, retiring in 1987.

Survivors include a son, Thomas (Connie) Kukowski, Winona; a daughter, Barbara (Richard) Arguello, Minnesota City, MN; two grandchildren, Carley and Casey Kukowski, Winona; a cousin, Paul Libera of Winona; and a very special friend, her dog, Sarah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a brother.

Funeral services were Saturday, August 29 at St. Casimir's Church with Rev. James W. Hennessy officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
