Kolter, Andrew P.
Andrew P. Kolter, 92, 1128 West Mark St., Winona, died Sunday, August 23, 1998 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Rushford, MN.

Andy was born in Winona on July 10, 1906 to Henry and Pauline (Kuklinski) Kolter. He married Evelyn E. Brandt on July 12, 1932 in Winona. She died May 9, 1987.

He retired on August 1, 1971 from Bay State Milling where he had worked as a test baker in the laboratory for over 46 years.

Andy is a member of Westfield Golf Club and the Winona Athletic Club.

He is survived by a son, Richard of Winona; and a sister, Marie Kreuzer, Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were Tuesday, August 25 at Fawcett Funeral Home with Father Michael J. Cronin of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Michael Gostomski, Joseph Snidarsic, Michael Riska, Terry Wilk, Todd Haines, and Andrew Miller.

A memorial is being arranged.

Fawcett Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

Bradley, Martha Alexander "Jerry"
Martha Alexander "Jerry" Bradley of West Palm Beach, died Friday, July 17, 1998 at her home after an extended illness.

Born in New York City, NY, Mrs. Bradley was the daughter of Durand Alexander and Maude King Alexander of Winona. Jerry's father was Vice President of Manufacturing for the J.R. Watkins Company during the 1920's through the 1940's. Her mother developed the famous Watkins Cook Book and the Watkins Household Hint Book under the pen name of "Elaine Allen." Jerry was raised in Winona and moved to the Palm Beaches more than 40 years ago.

Mrs. Bradley was a member of the Sailfish Club of Florida, the Everglades Club, and the Bath and Tennis Club. She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church.

She is survived by her stepson, Claiborne Bradley; her grandnephew, Matthew Bradley; and her longtime companion, Richard Tice.

A Mass of the Resurrection was said at St. Edward's with interment in Hillcrest Memorial Park, West Palm Beach. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Bradley's memory to either St. Edward's Catholic Church, 144 N. County Road, Palm Beach, FL 33480 or to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407.

Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Glende, Millard F.
Millard F. Glende, 84, Altura, MN, died Monday, August 24, 1998 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 27 at Jehovah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Altura, with Rev. Roger Vomhof officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Schummers, Mary Margaret
Mary Margaret Schummers, 90, of Saint Anne Hospice, formerly of 364-1/2 West Wabasha St., died Saturday, September 12, 1998 at the hospice.

She was born August 19, 1908 in Caledonia, MN, the eldest of five children of John Peter and Catherine (Clifford) Schummers.

Margaret was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish.

Miss Schummers was educated by the Franciscan Sisters through St. John High School and the College of Saint Teresa in Winona. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1929 with a major in Latin and minors in English and French. In 1954, after years of summer school, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science from the University of Minnesota. Miss Schummers taught English and Latin in four Minnesota high schools, and also served as school librarian. From 1929 to 1931 she was at Adams High School and then at Rosemount High School until 1935. She was at Lakefield High School from 1935 until 1943. In that year, she moved to Winona High School, where she taught for 30 years until her retirement in 1973. After her retirement she did volunteer work for the Bloodmobile, Community Memorial Hospital, and Cathedral Grade School. She took a number of bus tours of the Unite States and visited family in Oregon and California. She had a lifelong love of Latin, reading, and crossword puzzles.

Miss Schummers is survived by three nieces, Jacqueline Margaret Pegue and Maureen Sander of Oroville, CA, and Peggy Schummers, Santa Fe, NM; a nephew, John Peter Hoggins, Tooele, UT; four cousins, Fidelis Stemp, Chatfield, Lucille Swing, LaCrosse, WI, Joe Clifford, Colby, WI, and Rita Loushine, Chisholm; and a close friend, Margaret Driscoll of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Aloysius, Aloysius Nicholas, and John, and a sister, Catherine Hoggins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, Winona, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Caledonia, MN.

Friends may call Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Saint Anne Hospice.

Stettler, Andrew (Andy)
Andrew (Andy) Stettler, 91, Cochrane, WI, died Saturday, September 12, 1998 at his home.

He was born April 4, 1907 in the town of Cross, near Fountain City, WI to Ernst and Anna (Botzet) Stettler. He married Ruth L. Ruben on September 6, 1934 at Fountain City.

He was a graduate of the Eagle Valley School, the Fountain City High School and the University of Wisconsin at Madison's agricultural short course. He was able to implement many progressive farming techniques.

He assisted his parents in dairy farming at Longdale Farm until he bought it in 1940 and continued farming there with his wife until they retired to Cochrane in 1977.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ of Fountain City and a consistory member for many years. He was an Eagle Valley School Board member; secretary-trustee of the Eagle Valley Cemetery Association; director in the Buffalo County Electric Cooperative; board member of the Arcadia Cooperative; member of the Fountain City Area Historical Society; and Eagle Valley Wide-A-Wakes 4-H Club Leader.

Andrew traveled to Switzerland two times to visit his parents' ancestral home. He, with his family, built a Swiss Chalet Museum on the farm containing many Swiss artifacts. The museum was open to visitors on Sunday afternoons in the fall from 1963 to 1975.

In retirement he was active in restoring old gasoline engines and in woodworking. As a poet, he wrote many poems commemorating special family and community events. He did considerable translating from German to English, including letters for many friends, and also the "Geshichte von Fountain City" for the 150 year celebration of Fountain City. He truly was a family and community historian.

Andrew and Ruth did volunteer work in the elementary department of the C-FC School for many years during retirement.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Calvin, LaCrosse, WI, John (Mary) Fountain City, and Donald (Julia) West Bend, WI; a daughter, Margaret Dietrich, Buffalo City, WI; seven grandchildren, Karen, Heidi, Steven (Heather) and Daniel (Lori) Stettler and Kristine, Lisa and Kevin Dietrich; two great-grandchildren, Reid and Haley Stettler; and a sister, Hulda Stettler, West Bend, WI.

He was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Memorials are preferred to St. John's United Church of Christ and Winona Area Hospice Services.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 16 at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fountain City, with Rev. Fritz West and Rev. Gene Krueger officiating. Interment will be in Eagle Valley Cemetery, rural Fountain City. Friends may call for one hour before the service on Wednesday.

Casketbearers will be Andrew's nephews and honorary casketbearers will be all of Andrew's grandchildren.

Colby-Fawcett Funeral Home, Fountain City, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Thein, Margaret
Margaret Thein, 84, Lewiston, MN, died Saturday, September 12, 1998 at her home.

She is survived by seven children.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 16 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Lewiston. Burial will be in St. Rose Cemetery.

Hoff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
