Pellowski, Janice
Janice Pellowski, 68, of 678 East Broadway, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, November 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Anderson, Bernice
Bernice Anderson, 99, of Marinuka Manor in Galesville, Wis., and formerly of 520 East Sanborn St., Winona, died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at the manor.

Coral Bernice Sacia was born on February 20, 1901 in LaCrosse County, Wis., the daughter of Frances Ann (Johnson) and Lincoln Byron Sacia. She married Albin Silas Anderson on May 1, 1926 in Winona.

They lived in Winona, where they were members of McKinley United Methodist Church. Silas died March 17, 1982.

She is survived by one son, John Anderson of Sparta, Wis.; two daughters, Mary Anderson and Bonnie (Cyril) Dobis, both of Minneapolis, Minn.; eight grandchildren, including a granddaughter raised by Bernice, Barbara (John) Volkman of Madison, Wis., seventeen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Edna Wallum, Nell Hanson and Iris Sacia, and two brothers, Lyle and Warren Sacia.

Graveside services were Saturday, November 18 at Green Mound Cemetery, Holmen, Wis., with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church of Winona officiating.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be given to the Green Mound Cemetery, c/o Robert R. Johnson, 19839 Twesme Blvd., Galesville, WI 54630.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted the family with arrangements.

Haack, Harry H.
Harry H. Haack, 90, Elba, Minn., died Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at Whitewater Healthcare Center, St. Charles, Minn.

Harry was born July 1, 1910 in Oglivie, Minn. to Herman and Anna (Nuthak) Haack. He and Norma Brown were married on November 15, 1939 in Altura, Minn.

They farmed near Altura until 1967, when they moved to Elba to own and operate the Elba House until 1970. He then worked for the Winona County Highway Department, Whitewater State Park, and Rochester Post-Bulletin until retirement. He entered Whitewater Healthcare Center in July of 1999.

Harry was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church of St. Charles.

Survivors include his wife, Norma; three children, Rebecca (Don) Prebe, Bonnie Ward, and Terry (Pat) Haack, all of Elba; nine grandchildren, Randy Ward, Kelly Boice, Troy Prebe, Trudy Lafky, Tracy Prebe, Heather, Corey and Hillary Haack, and Heidi Aare; nine great-grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Ashley and Jakob Prebe, Erin and Erica Lafky, Jackson Prebe, Nathan and Nolan Boice; and a sister, Clara Holubar of Winona.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Allen Ward, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 20 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church with Revs. David Hodel and Michael Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Elba. Friends may call at St. Matthew Lutheran Church from 3-7 p.m. Sunday and one hour before the service Monday.

Hoff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Church, Edith Marie
June 11, 1924-November 16, 2000

Edith was born June 11, 1924 on a farm in Claypool, Ind. to Leroy Smith and Jennie (Clapper) Royer. Her childhood was spent in North Manchester, Ind. where she graduated from Chester High School and went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Manchester College. She taught junior high in Hammond, Ind. for two years and worked at a Church of the Brethren camp in Virginia during the summer. In 1948 she moved to Lewiston, Minn., serving as the Winona County Home Extension Agent until 1951. Edith married Russell T. Church on May 28, 1949 at North Manchester, Ind. They operated the family dairy farm in Stockton Valley until their retirement. Edith was also a substitute teacher for the Winona school district.

Edith was a very active member of the community. She belonged to Chautauqua, Winona County Home Economists Association, League of Women Voters, Order of the Eastern Star, Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered with Telecar, Meals on Wheels and delivered collection envelopes for the American Heart Association. She was chairwoman of the Winona County Planning Commission and Board of Adjustments. She and her husband Russell were very active in the American Dairy Association, building the "little red barn" and spending many years taking it and the dairy princesses around the area to promote dairy products. She helped with the Dairy Princess Contest and Dairy Banquet, organized the Dairy Bake-off and Dairy Days on the Mall. In appreciation, the ADA honored her and her husband with the Milk Pitcher Award. She was very active in 4-H, serving as a leader for many years, holding 4-H bread making classes and judging at various county fairs, particularly the Olmsted County Fair. She was honored by having a day named after her at the Winona County fair and, along with her husband, being crowned King and Queen of the Fair.

The church was always an important part of Edith's life. She grew up in the Church of the Brethren where her father was a minister and joined McKinley United Methodist Church when she married. She held positions on many of the church's committees, taught Sunday School, was president of the United Methodist Women, belonged to the church circle and was a willing volunteer for all church projects.

Edith and her husband enjoyed traveling and took cruises to the Caribbean, the Panama Canal, South America and the Hawaiian Islands. They traveled extensively in the United States, especially enjoying a trip to Alaska. They were honored to be a part of the United States Dept. of Agriculture's tour "People to People" to China and the USSR in 1983. As hosts for the University of Minnesota's agricultural exchange student program since 1963, they also enjoyed visiting former students in Great Britain, Scandinavia, and many other European countries, Australia, New Zealand and India. Edith will be remembered around the world by the many exchange students who called her "Mom."

Edith was an excellent cook, her homemade pies being the highlight of the Junto Dinner at their home. She was also famous for her homemade bread and chocolate chip cookies. Her home was always the gathering place of the extended family for all the major holidays. There are many fond memories of the children playing together, the adults gathered for fellowship and everyone enjoying all the good food she made. Edith was also an avid gardener and enjoyed canning and freezing all her produce. She loved to read, crochet and quilt whenever she had time.

She is survived by her husband, Russell; one son, Reid (Linda) Church of Minnesota City, Minn.; two daughters, Dawn (Ian) Webster of Minnesota City and Jenny (Dan) Werner of Owatonna, Minn.; five grandchildren, Rusty and Jared Church, Camden Webster, and Kathryn and John Werner; a brother, Dr. Lee (Glea) Smith of South Bend, Ind.; four sisters, Ruth Kurtz of North Manchester, Ind., Fran (Bill) Anderson of Elkhart, Ind., Marjorie (Ken) Dilling of Carmel, Ind., and Martha Colace of North Manchester, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Frank Caliendo of Scottsdale, Arizona; three sisters-in-law, Barbara Smith and Margaret Smith, both of North Manchester, and Olive Buswell of Winona; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gladys and Howard Volkart of Minnesota City.

Her parents, one sister, three brothers, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law have preceded her in death.

Edith touched the lives of many people and they all were enriched by the experience of knowing this very special woman.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 20, at McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Shirley Duncanson officiating. Interment will be in Oakland Cemetery, Minnesota City.

Friends may call from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, where an Order of Eastern Star service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to services on Monday.

Active pallbearers will be Rusty and Jared Church, Ian Webster, Dan Werner, Stan Kurtz and Malcolm Peasnall.

Honorary pallbearers will be Lee Smith, Tom Rentoul, Peter Franzky and Stoffel Reitsma.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, friends would consider a memorial to McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona.

Hanson, Birde Roslyne (Houser)
Birde Hanson, 72, of Houston, MN died Thursday, November 16th 2000, at her home in Houston. She was born to John and Sarah (Halvorson) Houser in their home in Sheldon, MN on January 22, 1928. She was raised in the Houston County area. She married Charles Hanson on May 15th, 1961, in Decorah, Iowa. Charles and Birde with their children, called many places home while Charles was in the military. In 1971 they resided in Houston, MN and have lived there until their time of passing. Birde was a member of the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, lady's circle; American Legion Auxiliary, participated in the Eagles Cancer Telethon, and monthly legion steakfries. Her hobbies were gardening, flowering, crafts, baking, canning, and she loved playing Euchere. Birde was very will known for her Christmas Teddy Bear Collection of over 300 bears. Birde along with her husband Chuck managed the Houston American Legion Club for over 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband Chuck; a daughter Patricia; parents, John and Sarah; six brothers: Henry, Theodore, Julius, Alfred, Selvin, and Elvin; three sisters: Hazel, Selvina, and Celia Houser.Birde is survived by her brother Ralph (Jesse) Houser of LaCrescent; her seven children: Gene (Linda) Stark of Houston, Jodine (Dwight) Emerson of Saugus California, Dorothy (Sam) Kuster of Houston, Dera Johnson of Rochester, Debra (Mark) Honsey, and Marion (Gary) Skree both of Rushford and Brian (Michelle) Hanson of Houston; 20 grandkids, and 11 great-grandkids. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. The funeral service will be at 10:30 AM on Monday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Houston. The visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the Church.

Searight, Layton T. "Orv"
Layton T. "Orv" Searight, 77, of 759 Bluffview Circle, died Friday, July 14, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Winona on September 19, 1922 to Roy L. and Lorena H. (Benson) Searight. He married Betty J. Prell in Winona on September 22, 1955. She died June 19, 1988.

Orv was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, participating in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and in the Philippine Liberation.

He was employed for over 32 years at the Winona Post Office as a postal clerk, retiring in 1987.

Orv was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church; a 50-year member of American Legion Post #9, Winona; Eagles Aerie #1243, Winona; Westfield Golf Club, where he caddied as a youngster in the 1920's and 1930's; he continued to play golf his entire life, and is currently a member of the Thursday Mens League. He is also a member of Elks Lodge #327, Winona, the Association of Retired Federal Employees and VFW Post #1287, Winona.

He is survived by nieces, Lovey Nichols, Evelyn (LeRoy) Gudmundson, and Susan Searight of Winona, Alice (Allen) Foss of Ettrick, WI, Georgia (Jon) Stearns, Minnesota City, MN, and Grace (Jack) Hitchcock of Madison, WI; nephews, Richard (Barbara) Searight or Morrisville, NC, Bill (Fina) Seaman of Palmdale, CA, Larry (Karolyn) Searight of Simi Valley, CA, and Michael (Ann) Searight of Sussex, England; a brother-in-law, Roy Sweat of Hartshorne, OK; sisters-in-law, Mary Searight, Madison, WI and Harriet Searight, Buffalo City, WI; and a lifelong friend and golf buddy, Frank "Spot" Renswick of Rosemead, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Betty, brothers, Ivan, David, Sr., and Morgan, sisters, Lottie Nichols and Alice Sweat, an infant brother, two nephews and a niece.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21 at McKinley United Methodist Church with Rev. Shirley Duncanson officiating.

Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Thursday, July 20 from 5-7 p.m., then on Friday from 10-11 a.m. at the church.

Burial will be in Arcadia Public Cemetery, Arcadia, WI, where members of American Legion Post #9 of Winona will conduct military rites.

Casketbearers will be Todd Stearns, Jeffrey and Jeremy Gudmundson, Allen Foss, Jr., Darryl Doerr and Herb Nichols, Jr.
