Armstrong, David
David Armstrong, 33, of 116 Iowa St., Minnesota City, Minn., died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital of sudden cardiac arrest.

He was born to Lee and Bonnie (Schueler) Drazkowski on February 8, 1967 in Winona. David married Cheryl Mertes at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on September 27, 1986.

He most recently was employed at Auto Collision Specialists. Previous to that he had worked for Fusion Coatings of Winona. He is a 1985 graduate of Winona Senior High School.

David is a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoying the outdoors.

He served in the U.S. Army as a machinist.

Survivors include his wife, Cheryl; a son, Joshuha at home; a daughter Tricia at home; his parents, Bill and Bonnie Armstrong, Goodview, Minn.; a brother, Jesse (Heidi) Armstrong of Winona; a sister, Kimberly Armstrong of Winona; a step-brother, Michael (Kristine) Drazkowski and a step-sister, Deidrie (Phil) Overton, both of Winona; his paternal grandmother, Doris Drazkowski of Winona; his father and mother-in-law, Jerry and Pat Mertes of Minnesota City, Minn.; his maternal step-grandmother, Val Schueler of Winona; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Bernard Drazkowski, Lila and Robert Schueler, and William and Ruth Armstrong.

A Mass of Christian celebration was held Friday, December 1 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Shawn T. Haremza officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery where members of American Legion Post #9 conducted military rites.

Casketbearers were Todd and Michael Drazkowski, Daniel Terek, Quint Wucherpfenning, Rob Mertes and John Fitzgerald.

A fund is being started for the family at Town and Country State Bank, Winona.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted the family with arrangements.

Romstad, Thor J.
Thor J. Romstad, 85, of the Kensington Apartments, Winona, died on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Thor was born on November 17, 1915, at Namsos, Norway, to Carl and Ingeborg (Larson) Romstad. He immigrated to Fergus Falls, Minn. in 1922. He lived in St. Cloud from 1929 until moving to Winona in 1952. He married Eleanor M. Stee on August 26, 1937 at Sisseton, So. Dak. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Thor was a crane operator on the Alcan Highway, worked in monument sales in St. Cloud, and was Plant Manager for Winona Monument Co., retiring in 1978. After 1978, Thor was a part-time monument salesman.

He was a member of Central Lutheran Church, Westfield Golf Club, Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9, Neville-Lien VFW Post #1287, Redmen Tribe #20, and a charter member since 1971 of Nor-Win Lodge 505 Sons of Norway.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; a son, Gary (Barbara) Romstad of St. Charles; grandchildren, Thor (Chris) Gernes, Susan Gernes (Larry), Erik Romstad and Carl Romstad; a brother, Arnold (Judy) Romstad of St. Cloud; sisters, Inger (Herbie) Chairhart, and Margaret (Butch) Sadergaski, both of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Gernes and his parents.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 2 at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Wade Davick officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Military rites were provided by the Neville-Lien VFW Post #1287.

Casketbearers were Sam Morken, Thor Gernes, Carl Romstad, Erik Romstad, Don Larson and Dick Dahl.

Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Brownell, Melvin R.
Melvin R. Brownell, 75, St. Charles, Minn. mayor, died Tuesday, November 28, 2000, from complications of COPD at Seasons Hospice, Rochester, Minn.

Mel was born September 1, 1925 in Racine Township of Mower County to Howard and Helen (Doten) Brownell. He attended country school in Racine Township and graduated from Stewartville High School in 1943. Mel served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1946 and graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in June of 1950.

He and Ann Linden were married November 10, 1952 in Winona.

Mel worked as a pharmacist at Ted Maier Drug of Winona from 1950-1955. On September 1, 1955, Mel became owner of St. Charles Drug Store. He owned and managed Brownell Drug for 37 years, retiring in 1992.

In 1965 Mel was elected to the St. Charles City Council and served as a member until elected mayor in 1977, serving as mayor for 23 years. He was one of six founding board members of Whitewater Manor Nursing Home, until it was sold to Beverly Corp. He was a founding member and chairman of the Dover-Eyota St. Charles Sanitary District. Mel was a member of the Winona County Planning and Zoning Board for 11 years; member of the Southeastern Minnesota Multi-County Housing and Redevelopment Authority for 17 years, serving many years as chairman; received the Minnesota NAHRO dedicated service award for commissioners in September of 1998; member of Winona County Project FINE; served one term on Minnesota Police Officers Standards Training Board; a member of Winona County Historical Society; served on Winona County Crime Stoppers; Winona County Partners for Tomorrow Workforce Oversight Committee; Winona County Working Together Community Policing Program; Winona County Area Joint Coordination Committee of Economic Development; member of St. Charles Public Library Board; St. Charles Economic Development Board; Minnesota Pharmacist Association; University of Minnesota Alumni Association; a lifetime member of the University of Minnesota Century Motor Club; member of American Legion, Moose Lodge and Lions Club, all of St. Charles.

He received the C.C. Ludwig Award for Distinguished Municipal Service from the League of Minnesota cities in June of 1985, was elected to the Winona County Fair Hall of Fame, was a founding member and volunteer for Winona County Habitat for Humanity and a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, serving as lector and on various church boards.

Mel is survived by his wife, Ann; six children, Thomas (Ann) Brownell of Oakton, VA., James (Janet) Brownell of Chanhassen, Minn., Richard (Serena) Brownell of New York, NY, Mary (Tom) Andrew of Libertyville, Ill., Christopher Brownell of Red Wing, Minn., and Paul (Selina Jackson) Brownell of Washington, D.C.; nine grandchildren; five siblings, Marjorie Wolfgram of Racine, Minn., Olive (Don) Goodrich of Menomonie, Wis., Wayne (Mary) Brownell of Rochester, Minn., Marilyn Brownell of New York, NY, and Dorothy (Jim) Olds of Platteville, Wis.

One son, John Brownell, preceded him in death in 1990.

A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, December 2 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Revs. James Callahan and Caesar Dralega concelebrating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles where graveside honors were provided by the St. Charles American Legion.

Memorials are preferred to St. Charles Foundation for Academic Excellence, St. Charles Borromeo Scholarship Fund, St. Charles Public Library Building Fund and St. Charles Area Volunteers.

Hoff Funeral Home's-St. Charles Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

Boberg, Norman J.
Norman J. Boberg, 75, Dodge, Wis., died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, December 2 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Arcadia, Wis., with Rev. Patrick Umberger officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia.

Probst, Anthony "Tony"
Anthony "Tony" Probst, 83, of St. Charles, Minn., died Thursday, November 30, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Tony was born April 19, 1917 in South Dakota. In 1919 his family moved to Owatonna where he graduated from high school in 1935. He served in the Army from 1939-1943. He married Zila Stribley in 1942. She later died. On July 20, 1974 Tony and Berneice (Hughes) Nihart were married in St. Charles. Tony worked for Armour Co. in Owatonna, Chicago, Iowa and St. Charles, retiring in 1978.

Tony was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, American Legion Post, and the Moose Lodge, all of St. Charles.

Survivors include his wife, Berneice; three stepchildren, Richard Nihart of Fayette, Iowa, Carol Odell of Muncy, Penn., and Janet Campbell of St.Charles; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sally Brothers of Minneapolis.

Three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday, December 4 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, with Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minn. Friends may call from 2-5 p.m. Sunday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Monday at Hoff Funeral Home's-St. Charles Chapel.

Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Hoff Funeral Home's-St. Charles Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Hoeve, Owen D.
Owen D. Hoeve, 67, Bloomington, Minn., died Tuesday, November 28, 2000.

Private services were held. Memorials are preferred to Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.
