Vix, Lula A.
Lula A. Vix, 88, of Houston, died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at Franciscan ­ Skemp Medical Center in LaCrosse, WI.

She was born on May 6, 1912, in Houston County, Minnesota to William and Maude (Johnston) Ray. She married Lloyd O. Vix in 1930 in Winona, MN. He died in 1987.

Lula and her husband were life long farmers. Lula also worked for Auto Lite in LaCrosse and Rush Products in Rushford. Lula was very active on the farm and enjoyed keeping up her lawn. She loved to drive her tractors, play cards, go camping and spend time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston where she was a member of WELCA and taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the North and South Senior Citizen's groups in LaCrosse.

Lula is survived by two sons: Lloyd J. (June) Vix and Charles (Barbara) Vix both of Houston; one daughter: Ruth (Donald) Boyum of Houston; 17 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren; one sister: Lora (Kenneth) Schlabach of Holmen, WI; and one sister-in-law: Thelma Ray of Texas.

Lula was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister Lila Arnett, five brothers: Lea Ray, Lloyd Ray, and Lyle Ray, and two brothers who died in infancy.

The funeral service will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 31, 2001, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hokah, MN. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, at the church.

The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Valley View Nursing Home or Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, in Houston.

Thiele, Walter Ervin "Hoot"
Walter Ervin "Hoot" Thiele died peacefully on January 22, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Tucson, Ariz. Walter passed away from complications of heart disease, lung disease and cancer.

Walter was born in Winona, to Albert and Maude (Hoover) Thiele on March 20, 1927. He attended Winona Senior High School until his entry into the military during World War II. Walter served in the Navy with distinction.

After the war, Walter returned to Minnesota, completed his high school degree, and then graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis with honors. He then began a career of over 30 years with Form Products of Fridley, Minn.

In 1971 he began a joyous marriage to Ella, which lasted almost 30 years, until his death. Upon his retirement in 1989, Walter and his wife began wintering in Tucson, Arizona. In 1998 they moved from their home in Fridley to North St. Paul, where they share a duplex with their son and his family.

Walter was a long time member of the VFW and Eagles Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and two sisters.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Alfred Wolfram; a daughter-in-law, Irene Wolfram; and three grandchildren, Tara, Garrett and Brynden.

Visitation and funeral services were held January 26 in Tucson. A second visitation will be held in Winona at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 1.

The Winona funeral service will be held at Central Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. Friday, February 2. Friends may call at the church from 12 noon until time of the service on Friday. Rev. Scott E. Olson will officiate.

Following the service, interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Fellowship will follow at the Winona Eagles Club.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Neville-Lien Post #1287 will provide military honors at the cemetery.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, both in Minnesota and Arizona. "He was a man; for his all and all, we shall not see his likes again."

Nissalke, Fern O.
Fern O. Nissalke, 67, Dakota, Minn., died Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at the LaCrescent Healthcare Center, LaCrescent, Minn.

Memorial services were Friday, December 15 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nodine, Minn., with Rev. Erling Carmichael officiating. Private family burial of her cremated remains will be at a later date.

Halik, Delores L.
Delores L. Halik, 79, Lake City, Minn., died Sunday, December 10, 2000, near Weaver, Minn., as the result of a car accident.

Funeral services were Wednesday, December 13 at the Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha, Minn., with Rev. Al Kleinsasser of First Baptist Church officiating. Interment of her cremated remains will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Valtierra, Miriam
Miriam Valtierra, 3 years old, of St. Charles, Minn., died Sunday, December 10, 2000, in the Emergency Room of St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., of injuries she received in an auto accident Sunday on Highway 14 east of Rochester.

Miriam was born April 25, 1997 in Winona to Jose Santos Valtierra Sr. and Esmerelda Rangel.

She is survived by her mother, Esmerelda Rangel; a brother, Jose Santos Valtierra Jr.; maternal grandparents, Federico and Maria Rangel of Mexico; and paternal grandparents, Rubin Valtierra of Mexico and Maria de Jesus Easca of St. Charles.

Her father, Jose Santos Valtierra died in December 1999.

A Funeral Mass was held Thursday, December 14 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in St. Charles with Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will be in Mexicalli, Mexico.

Campbell, Ella A. B.
Ella A .B. Campbell, 89, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at Sauer Memorial Home, where she had been a resident since 1997.

Ella was born November 11, 1911, at Deep, No. Dak., to Henry and Louise (Zabel) Frederick.

She had lived in Kansas City, MO, St. Paul, and Frederic, Wis., prior to returning to Winona in 1970.

She attended and volunteered a through the Winona Friendship Center.

Survivors include children, Charles (Mary) Kadas of Guatay, Cal., Sandra Lines of Winona, and Henry (Nanette) Lines of Brightwood, Ore.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Herbert Frederick and Hugo Frederick, both of St. Paul; and sisters, Margaret Terland of Frederick, Wis., Mabel (Charles) Woodika of St. Paul, and Elsie Brents, Kansas City, MO.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, December 18 at Cedar Valley Lutheran Church with Rev. Kris Fahey officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Valley Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. and on Monday at the church after noon.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.

Thompson, Mary Francis (Fjelstad)
Mary Francis (Fjelstad) Thompson, Buffalo City, Wis., passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis., of complications resulting from lung cancer, originally diagnosed in July 1998.

She was a resident of Buffalo City, Wis., having moved to Pecks Park in 1997 from Winona where she and her husband, John had resided since 1961. Mary was born to William and Alice (Sheppard) on October 11, 1926 in Wykoff, Minn. She graduated from Wykoff High School in 1945 and worked for her grandmother in Wykoff at the Sheppard Maternity Home until her marriage to John W. Thompson of Wykoff on March 5, 1946.

Mary and John lived and farmed in the Wykoff area until 1955 when they moved to Preston, Minn., and in 1958 to rural Preston. Upon coming to Winona, they lived at 103 East Howard St. where they raised their six sons. Their second and last residence in Winona was at 551 Vila St.

While living on East Howard, Mary was employed at Watkins Nursing Home while pursuing further education, graduating from Winona State University with a degree in therapeutic recreation in 1980. Upon their move to Vila St., Mary continued to assist with home health care in the Winona area, plus giving care to her husband, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease. Upon John's death in 1997, Mary moved to her present home in Buffalo City, Wis., where she happily resided, involving herself in making friends, baking bread, gardening, watercolor painting and providing a home for her two housemates --cats, Casper and Cricket.

Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, and three brothers, Charles, Donald and David.

Survivors include her sons: Patrick (Janet) of Appleton, Minn., children, Ryan (Becky), Annika and Trevor; Daniel (Bonnie) of Minneiska, Minn., children, Amy, Cory (Brooke) and daughter Ryoko, Jill and Aaron; Thomas (Debra) of Winona, children, Andrew, Kristie and Kerrie; James (Jenny) of Winona, children, Gideon (Naomi), Melissa and Tobias; William of Winona; and Peter (Jennifer) of Lakeville, Minn., children, April, Christopher and Robert. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Barb and Sally Fjelstad, Gertrude and Ethel Thompson; brother-in-law, Allen Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and also attended St. Lawrence Church in Alma, Wis.

Mary's outgoing personality, hospitality, love for her family and zest for living will be very much missed by her family and friends.

A Funeral Mass was offered Saturday, December 16 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
