Voelker, Marcellus T. "Bud"
Marcellus T. "Bud" Voelker, 76, 668 East King St., died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

He was born July 15, 1924 in Winona to Edward L. and Magdaline (Sobeck) Voelker. He married Ann T. Styba, November 28, 1948 in Winona.

He was employed at Northern States Power Co. before his retirement.

He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Ann of Winona; a son, Tony Voelker of Winona; and three sisters, Mary Brown of Edina, Minn., Jane Thilmany of Camanche, Iowa, and Genevieve Sparks of Valley Station, KY.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eleanore Goltz and Geraldine Hamerski.

There was no service.

Benz, Elmer J.
Elmer J. Benz, 93, died Saturday, September 16, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, where he had been a resident for the past four and a half years.

He was born July 28, 1907 in Winona, to William and Emma (Boehmke) Benz. He married Bernice Foss on May 23, 1937 in Winona.

He worked for J.R. Watkins for 48-1/2 years, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice on December 15, 1995, his parents, daughter, Barbara Larsen, and brother, Herbert.

He is survived by children: Ross (Marilyn) Benz of Rosemount, Loren (Deborah) Benz of Winona, and Becky (Gregory) Maliszewski of Lakeville; son-in-law, Leon (Jean) Larsen of Woodbury; grandchildren: Sheila (David) Eriksen, Sonya (Timothy) Mertens, Scott (Wendy) Larsen, Sharon (Craig) Bjella, Benjamin, Andrew and Jennifer Maliszewski, Lori (Josh) Gatzke, Brian Benz, Timothy Benz, and Michael Benz; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, September 19 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Revs. O.H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were grandsons, Scott Larsen, Benjamin Maliszewski, Andrew Maliszewski, Brian Benz, Timothy Benz and Michael Benz.

Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church or the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

Elmer's family wishes to thank the staff of the C&R and Dr. Parker for the great care they provided for him, and Revs. O.H. Lindholm and James Nelson for their many visits.

Hoeppner, Joseph G.
Joseph G. Hoeppner, 86, of Winona, died Friday, September 15, 2000 at St. Anne Hospice.

The son of Harry Hoeppner and Anna Trautner Hoeppner, he was born at Winona Memorial Hospital and resided for many years at 203 East Wabasha. He attended Cotter High School and graduated from Saint Mary's College in 1935. He married Anna Marie Garvey of Seneca, Wis., in Medford, Ore. in 1943.

During World War II he served in the U.S. Army, with the 80th General Hospital. While stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines, he attained the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star. Discharged from the Army in 1946, he owned and operated the Hoeppner Insurance Company until his retirement in 1983.

Joe Hoeppner lived his life with great faith in the Lord. He was a loving father, with a wonderful sense of humor, and took great delight in his family and friends. He belonged to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish. For many years he was a member of the Serra Club and the Knights of Columbus, for which he served as Past Grand Knight from 1950-1952. He was Envoy in Charge and Ambassador Supreme for the Winona Chamber of Commerce, served on the Zoning Board for the city of Winona, was a member of the American Legion and the 40& 8.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anna Marie, who died in 1990, by his parents and his brother, Harold.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Emmons and her husband, Patrick, of Dell Rapids, So. Dak.; his son, Rev. Michael Hoeppner of Winona; his son Edward Haworth Hoeppner and his wife Susan of Rockford, Mich.; his daughter, Mary Hoeppner of Burnsville, Minn.; his sister, Kathryn Steffes of Plymouth, Mass.; his brother, John Hoeppner of Winona; his granddaughter, Susan Boerboom and her husband, Wade; his granddaughter, Jenny Engbrecht and her husband, Orrin; his grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth and Luke Haworth-Hoeppner; and his great-grandchildren, Katie Boerboom, Morgan, Marie and Wyatt Engbrecht.

Funeral services were Tuesday, September 19 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Saint Anne's Hospice, Winona.

Mercier, Charlotte M.
Charlotte M. Mercier, 69, of 857 East Broadway, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

She was born March 28, 1931 in Winona to John A. and Charlotte E. (Eggers) Wantoch. She married Paul A. Mercier in April 1953. They later divorced.

Charlotte was employed at Winona Knitting Mills, retiring in 1993.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, Polish Heritage Society and Polish Museum.

Survivors include a son, John (Debbie) Mercier of Minnesota City, Minn.; two daughters, Cynthia Mercier and Patrice (Daniel) Konkel, both of Winona; and five grandchildren: Amy Jo, J.P., Marita, Justin and Jacob.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sons, Michael and Kenneth.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Wednesday, September 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with preliminary services at 9:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be J.P. Mercier, Oscar Donahue, Ricky Orr, Paul Jaszewski, Amy Jo Mercier and Marita Mercier.

Charlotte was a very loving, caring and giving mom, grandma and friend. She will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. To some, she may have been better known as "Chuck the Duck." She always put others before herself and was always there for the people who needed her. She was our rock. We love and miss you mom, grandma and friend.

Luhmann, Earl "Dick"
Earl "Dick" Luhmann, 54, of Rural Route 1, Box 401-1, Minnesota City, Bass Camp, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born July 3, 1936 to Fred and Tilley Luhmann on a farm in Winona County.

Dick was a graduate of Winona Senior High School and served in the Army from 1958-1960. He was employed at Brad Ragan since 1958.

Dick was known as "Dickie the fix-it man." He loved to help people and loved his work, the outdoors, and his home on the river at Bass Camp.

He is a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years, Darlene; daughters, Vicki (Russell) Matzke, Kim Luhmann, Debbie (Tom) Anderson, Jennifer (Mike) Fontaine, Cheryl (Jeff) Will, Cindy (Don) Mueller, Candi (Jamie) Seibert Flores; sisters, Virgil (Ralph) Albrecht, Mary Ann (Eugene) Olson, Glennis (Ken) Pahnke and Shirley Vitse; a brother, Curtis; grandchildren, Andrea, Erica, Stephanie, Danielle, Ben, Courtney, Brianna, Jessica, Phillip, Jacob, Cassie, Brodie, and Madison; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 21 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winona, with Revs. Oliver H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home and at the church on Thursday one hour before the service.

Casketbearers are Jeff Will, Don Mueller, Russell Matzke, Tom Anderson, John Majerus and Karl Corey.

Honorary pallbearers are Jim Bambenek, Gary Bratland, Terry Odegaard, Harvey Krage, Leo McKenna and Jim Johnson of Brad Ragan.

Memorials may be given to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
